Medicare activists/advocates nationwide
On July 6th, a coalition of very
powerful forces are joining together in a
coordinated day of national action dubbed \
a "day of rage" over drug company
greed/price-gouging and their
corruption of the political process to
protect their profits and corporate agendas.
The theme of the day will be
to call on Congress, on behalf
of the American people, to "declare
independence from drug company
price gouging and profiteering", and the
targets will be particularly
egregious drug companies and members of
Congress who are their shills.
This day of action will take place in local
communities during the July
4th Congressional recess when Members of
Congress are home in their districts.
Folks mobilizing forces for this
day include: Public Citizen, AFSMCE, SEIU,
US Action, Families USA, and scores
of local health care and senior citizen
advocacy groups around the country.
Actions are planned in at least 20
states bringing media attention
to the issue of high drug prices, drug
company political influence,
and the need for affordable drug coverage for
people on Medicare, especially
targeting vulnerable Congressional
candidates in swing districts,
particularly going after the more slimey ones.
This day of action will be preceeded
by a release sometime between now and
then of a major study by Public Citizen
documenting, by specific drug company:
* profits (amount and margin)
* research & development (amount and percentage of revenue)
* marketing costs (amount and percentage of revenue)
* salaries of top execs
* campaign contributions to Congressional and Senate candidates over the
last few election cycles
* how Members of Congress and Senators subseqeutnly voted on bills of
interest to the drug industry
Local organizers need your help,
especially turning people out. We know
it's very short notice (less than two weeks now),
and with the July 4th
holiday coming at us fast,
it doesn't leave much time, but if you are
interested in helping out,
please let us know, and we'll try to hook you up
with people in your area
working on this day of action.
Thanks for your help and consideration.
