When we put our loved one in a nursing home
can we really expect and will we get the
"expert" care we expect and that our elderly
deserve?"

The following articles and information will
debate and discuss the issue.

Woman's death underscores family concerns

Thursday, April 27, 2000

By HEATH FOSTER
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

"They say there's been a disturbing increase
in cases like Barquist's, in which nursing homes,
because of a lack of nursing staff training
or short-staffing, are ignoring signs
that a resident's condition is deteriorating
until the resident is in a medical crisis.

'We're seeing more and more cases
in which the licensed staff is not
doing the critical thinking to keep
these things in check,' said Elaine Odum,
a regional director of residential
care services in the
state's Aging and Adult Services Administration."

Here, "Saving Grace" will examine
the over use of sedatives in the long term care setting.

IS THE OVER USE OF SEDATIVES, THAT IS SO RAMPANT,
A MARK OF
"EXPERT" CARE?

It would seem before the nursing home industry
can deem itself "experts" a noted revolution
must occur and rethinking on the use of
sedatives in the care setting.

"Experts", it would seem would be highly
aware of this research and act accordingly
.

Nursing Homes Should Re-Think Sedative Use

September 07, 1999

INTRODUCTION

"A surprising report finds many nursing home
patients are routinely drugged.
Researchers say powerful sedatives
and other anti-psychotics are commonplace.
But now their report questions
whether these drugs are necessary."

RESTRAINTS

It would seem before the nursing home industry
can deem itself "experts" a noted revolution
must occur and rethinking on the use of
RESTRAINTS in the care setting.

"Experts", it would seem would be highly
aware of this research and act accordingly

Restraints Affect Elder Health

"Despite this knowledge, and the fact that
the federal government passed the
Nursing Home Reform Law in 1987
to reduce restraint use,
there are still 300,000
nursing home patients subjected to this
"inhumanely stressful practice,"
they noted.
One of the main reasons may be the
lack of commitment on the part
of those that operate nursing homes.

CONCLUSION:

"this study of different cultural approaches
and strategies to evaluate
and treat urinary incontinence
may stimulate a public debate
on the quality of care in nursing homes
and promote the sharing of care practices
designed to reduce urinary incontinence."
