Reform Group Challenges Mr. Bush, in
Philadelphia, to Address Abuse and
Neglect of Nursing Home Residents.
Godfrey, IL.Nursing Home Monitors,
the grassroots consumer group
devoted exclusively to eradicating
nursing home abuse and neglect,
reacting strongly to a recent HCFA report
that 18.5% of nursing homes
surveyed were cited for abuse in fiscal 2000,
urges Gov. George W. Bush
to immediately address this grave issue
during the Republican
Convention. Sixty eight percent
(68%) of nursing home care is paid for
by public funds.
Neglect and abuse of the elderly will
not stop as long as they are not
addressed by the Federal Government
as criminal acts that deserve
jail-time. Nursing home owners
and administrators have to be held
accountable. stated Nursing Home Monitors
executive director, Violette
King.
1,854 nursing homes were cited for abuse.
According to King, this is
only the tip of the iceberg.
Most abuse and neglect is covered up to
avoid publicity and empty beds.
This is a criminal as well as a human
rights violation issue.
The world community needs to know.
Gay Nell Harper, vice-president of
the Texas Advocates for Nursing Home
Reform states:
All enforcement agencies should be utilized
to prosecute neglect and
abuse in nursing homes. I call
on George W. Bush as the Republican
presidential nominee to outline the
protective steps he will take if
elected president.
Marie B. Wisdom, president of the
Austin, Texas based Advocates for
Nursing Home Reform states:
If I beat someone on the street, I would
surely face criminal charges.
Yet physical abuse goes on daily in
nursing homes and the responsible party,
the nursing home, gets off the
hook.
A 10 ft. by 22 ft. mobile billboard
(see attachment) depicting helpless,
abused and neglected nursing home
residents will be driven around the
convention center to bring national
and international attention to

FROM ILA SWAN
IT'S ONLY MONEY:
The Center for Responsive Politics
is about to unveil a comprehensive
political-donation database at its Web site,
www.opensecrets.org,
with figures going back 10 years.
Visitors will be able to see,
for instance, that pharmaceuticals companies
have roughly doubled their giving
to both parties since 1992 --
from $4.9 million to $10.2 million so far this year.
(The site shows Pfizer Inc.
and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
virtually in a dead heat at the top of the pack,
giving $1.39 million and $1.37 million, respectively.)
Meanwhile, donations from oil and
gas companies have been up and down
over time but are still twice as high this year
as pharmaceuticals companies -- $19.7 million so far. |
We all have an opportunity to submit
a question for consideration for
the upcoming Presidential debates.
PLEASE GO TO:
http://www.debates.org/
THOUSANDS of AMERICANS ARE DYING IN
NURSING HOMES DUE TO NEGLECT
and GREED EACH YEAR!
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
We all agree that health is an important issue.
However, when it comes to nursing home
residents it is often a fatal issue.
Sen. Grassely's committee
has received testimony that thousands
of nursing home residents are being killed,
due to negligent care, each year.
So far, little is being done to right this wrong.
President Clinton is offering a
billion dollar fix, yet in the past
these dollars generally end up
in the pockets of nursing home
owners and political campaign coffers...
while our nation's seniors continue to be killed.
Do these citizen's deserve the right
to life without being victimized
and killed by greed and negligence?
If so, what are you going to do to
enforce existing laws governing
nursing home care and save those
who cannot care for themselves?
