National Independent Advocate Conference 2000
July 13, 14, & 15, 2000
Sheraton Hotel, Bush River Road
Columbia, South Carolina
History and Background:
The Independent Advocate Conference resulted from
frustration and concern of independent advocates
attending other conferences.
The attendance and financial support of these conferences
by the nursing home industry compromised our ability
to advocate effectively for the nursing home resident.
Our David and Goliath battle is difficult
under the best of conditions, and spending our time
and resources to sit with the opponent was counterproductive.
As a result, our network of advocates and
advocacy organizations created and financed
the first conference in 1998.
Attendance would be by INVITATION ONLY.
We would not have any attendees that were
receiving state or federal funds or compensation.
We would not have any attendees that had any
connection or affiliation with the nursing home industry.
Hosted by Texas Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (TANHR)
in Dallas, the first conference was an overwhelming success.
Last year Barbara Hengstebeck,
Coalition to Protect America's Elders,
and I pulled together the conference in Tampa.
Building on the success of TANHR, we incorporated
a Legal Day for plaintiff attorneys who
litigate nursing home cases.
The Tampa conference brought
more of us together,
generated new ideas and strengthened our determination
to improve nursing home resident care.
Barbara Hengstebeck and I will be co hosting the 2000 Conference.
