BeAvEr: Question: When are you going to do another single???? And what is it called???? <=== serious question D&D: Beaver ... latest one is Truly Madly Deeply. little indecisive about the 4th single-could possibly be a song called 'Violet' |zoe|: Do you perform live and if not are you planning to in the future? D&D: OK WE ARE LEAVING...SAVAGE GARDEN WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL FOR THE KIND WORDS AND LOVE AND STUFF AND WELL; SEE YA! ------------------------------ We Blew Up The Garden Gnome One is a bit of a wag. The other is a nerdy swot. They are the complete opposites- the Ying and Yang of pop, so to speak! Diane Godley finds out what make Savage Garden roar. Have you ever been savaged by a garden? Daniel: I've been stung by bees before, haha Darren:We blew up the garden gnome to destroy any future references to gardens.Savage Garden is actually inspired by Anne Rice novels about vampires (the author of the book interview with the vampire) I love those books. Its got a deeper meaning. its not about garden gnomes. What were you like at school? Daniel: I dunno. I didn't go very much. My nickname was "waggin" haha! I was in control at school. I had older brothers who went through the school before me. They didn't have a bad reputation, but they didn't have a good one either. So my reputation was a spin-off of theirs- instant credibility. Darren: I was normal. a complety normal kid: the school nerd. In grade eight and nine I got picked on. I was a freak - no one understood me. I was the kid who wanted to be abducted by ET. Then all the losers left in Year 10. Daniel: I was one of those losers! Diane: So was I! Darren: I was quite good at school and very artistic. In Year 11 it was a turn-around. I was one of the coolest kids in school. I was in school musicals: the kid who could sing. It was bizarre. I loved school. It's an amazing little world. The rules inside school are totally different from the outside world. Daniel: Reservoir Dogs - R-E- I'm not a good speller. That comes from wagging school, haha! I can spell dogs. D-O-G-S. Darren: R-E-S-E-R-V-O-I-R. Is that right? Diane: Yep What's the square root of 625? Darren: Wouldn't have a clue. I got limited achievement in maths. I loved science- biology -but I hated maths. Daniel: 12? dont ask me questions like that! Diane: Erm... 25 actually. When was the first time you heard yourself on the radio? Daniel: I was sitting in my car. I knew the song had gone to radio - friends in Melbourne rung and told me they had heard the song on the radio - but I hadn't heard it and I was getting really frustrated. Then, one day I was sitting in my car and it just came on. It was a beautiful feeling. Darren: I was actually working in a video shop and I was having a really bad day. Then the song just came on the radio and it just made my day. The first time I saw myself on tv I remember I hated it. I think you go through that period where you first hear yourvoice but Im over that now. i can hear my voice now - I know what I sound like. So its not that big of a shock to me. But to see myself on TV! i've delt with that now too. It was like, okay, thats what I look like, all right, I'll deal with that. Everyone else has for 23 years. It was the first time I realisd what I looked like in 3D. Would you ever consider doing a remake of "Smoke on the Water"? Darren: N-E-V-E-R. never. I'm not influenced by classical rock at all. I dont know if we'd ever do a cover version of anything. live we would, but we'd never release anything. I thing we have too much to say - we can't shut up as it is. When was the last time you went moshing? Darren:I missed the entire mosh pit experience. I think im going to mature and be buried without ever having experienced to joys of guitar rock moshing. Daniel: Although they're not really a mosh band, there was a mosh pit at a Hoodoo Gurus concert I went to once. That was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed being a yobbo for once in my life, haha! ------------------------------ Darren Hayes' Interview with Rolling Stone "Thousand Words" Darren Hayes of Australian pop sensations Savage Garden feels truly, madly, deeply about the following: "Star Wars." It reminds me of my childhood. I was completely obsessed with it and I've never really gotten over it. I used to collect all the toys and I remember when I was 13, I thought I was too old to have toys so I sold them all for $26 and it's something that I have regretted all my life. I've spent a fortune since re-collecting everything. U2. Everything from "Achtung, Baby" onward, nothing before. It changed the way I see music, especially lyrically and vocally. It's so dark, brooding and honest. I have a copy of "Pop" at home and I bought another one on the road because I missed it and the two of us fight over it on the plane. It's like, "Are you gonna listen to 'Pop?' Dammit, O.K ..." Avanti Italian Restaurant. I can't get enough of that stuff. My favorite dish of all time is linguine with pesto. My favorite place is in my neighborhood back home in Bardon, Australia. I've been to Italy but nothing compares to Avanti yet. Like anything, the Italian that I know is a gross generalization of what Italian food is like, it's a parody -- maybe that's why I enjoy it. New York City. To put it in perspective, less than a year ago was the first time I left my country. I had been obsessed with America. We were so green and the minute we landed, I realized that everything I thought was cool wasn't really cool anymore. There is just something in the streets and the air that I had never experienced it before. It's just so "---- You!" Anne Rice. The name of the band comes from her vampire novels. It's a concept within one of the books -- they talk about their world is a savage garden. There are times when you'll be reading the books and you'll say, "All right, is this real?" I just think it's so clever that she's been able to create that feeling of paranoia when you're reading her books. ------------------------------ VH1 interview with Savage Garden The Wallflowers dropped out of number 1, leaving it open to the Australian band Savage Garden. The song, "I Want You" which, you know, was partially inspired by the soft drink?! Darren? DARREN : Well, on our first trip to America, we didn't have umm... we don't have Cherry Coke or Dr.Pepper. Actually, Dr.Pepper just came and I was fasinated by it. I just think it was the most amazing taste! It was really, really cool and it summed up what I thought of America and uh... I guess it was just a way of slipping in a compliment to someone. I say "You're sweet like cherry cola." There's a lot of things in that, but that's where it came from... ------------------------------ INTERVIEW OF THE BOYS 1. Who was your childhood hero, and why? Daniel: The Lone Ranger- it is hard to be a legend on a horse! Darren: Luke Skywalker coz he was so damned cool. 2. Name your most unusual possession. Daniel: My inflatable girl(crossed out)globe! Darren: My Star Wars toys 3. What, apart from keys, do you never leave home without? Daniel: My car or suitcase. Darren: Mobile, lip balm, Rolling Stones, etc., etc. 4. What was the first gig you ever went to? Daniel: Quickexit (my old band). Darren: Alison Moyet 5. Repeat the worst come-on line you've ever tried. Daniel: I'm stilling working on a good one. Darren: " I'm not trying to pick you up but..." 6. Name a fantasy you have yet to live out. Daniel: I'll know it when my pick up line works. Darren: New Year's eve NYC. 7. What is your motto? Daniel: Get what you want anyway you can. Darren: Laugh for Christ's sake! 8. What is the secret to your success? Daniel: Don't stop when you think you should. Darren: Positive thinking/ dream! 9. Define agony. Daniel: Dentist. Darren: Being put on hold. 10. Describe yourself after a few drinks. Daniel: Anybody's! Darren: Don't drink ever. 11. What's the most fun you can have with your clothes on? Daniel: Laser Force. Darren: Twister!! 12. What is your most underrated talent? Daniel: Erotic Dancer. Darren: Stand up comic 13. Who were you in a past life? Daniel: Barney( From the Simpsons). Darren: Bart Simpson 14. Finish this sentence: Never attempt to... Daniel: TRY to be funny when your not! Darren: Tell a Jewish joke to a New Yorker. ------------------------------>
A VH1 Interview with Savage Garden

Hey Savage Garden. Your first American single just went gold; how do you feel?
(Darren and Daniel are speaking, joking actually, at same time )
DARREN : You know they're such friendly people and if they bite you, every now and then, you can stick them in the retired home for the monkeys.
DANIEL: Blah, blah, blah, blah, ran out of words ( To others behind camera ) Help me out guys.
No guys, seroiusly.

DARREN : It's like every musician's dream. We sat in Daniel's bedroom four years ago and wrote some songs and dreamed about going to other countries and we're sitting here in New York City and we've got a gold single, so that feels fantastic.
The gold single is for "I Want You" from their self-titled debut
(Clip from "I Want You" is shown)

DARREN : I guess it's about connecting, and the song is about obsession and attraction and whatever and we just rather have that than the "boy meets girl" kind of thing , we say something a little different.
(Another clip is shown, now commenting on the woman in the video)

DARREN : We wanted someone really tough and had a bit of attitude or whatever but still was beautiful, but not conventionaly, you know, what you call a babe or whatever cause umm .. I think she did really well and came across really great, so.
Uh, yeah guys. Well thats all fine and good, but what we want is the real dish about Australia... Kangaroos?

DARREN : (making a claw with his hand) When they get older they have big claws and they can rip your stomach open (Both Laugh ) Seriously!
Backwards toilets?

DANIEL : It's the southern hemisphere (Making image of earth with hands) This is us, this is you guys, so it goes around that way instead of that way (Daniel shrugs)
DARREN : The first thing any Australian does when they come here is they sit there and watch the toilet (Pretends to be watching toilet)
Whats the deal with vegimite anyway.

DARREN : It's DISGUSTING, don't believe the hype. (Looks at camera) Don't believe the hype. It tastes like someone scraped off the bottom of a birdcage and stuck it on a piece of toast.
Koala bears?
(Daniel about to say something, but Darren cuts him off.)

DARREN : Koala bears are really cute, they're very nasty; don't ever pick them up... they'll scratch your face off... they pee on you...
Well, that's some good advice from a couple of Aussies who are conquering America.

DARREN : well...

DANIEL : Well, we haven't done it yet ...

DARREN : We're practicing to say things like "Would you like fries with that" just incase the carreer doesn't happen. This is a shot we're taking and we'll see what happens...

Q: Do you guys enjoy meeting with your fans, including chats?

Savage Garden: I love this. I love a conversation. I'm not always comfortable being a person on a pedestal. It can make a meeting kind of uncomfortable. I'd much rather run into a fan on the street than I would have them meet me backstage....

*****************************************************
People Online: We're talking right now with Darren Hayes of pop sensation Savage Garden, whose newest single, "The Animal Garden," was released earlier this year. Darren Hayes -- welcome!
Darren Hayes: Thanks. Can I start by saying one thing? There's been a lot of confusion on the Internet about chatters on the Internet talking to Savage Garden. If you've been talking to people on the Internet, Daniel and I don't go into chat rooms, so it's not us. But hello, I'm happy to be here.
People Online: Here's our first question...
Question: I love your music! Do you know how many tracks there are going to be on the new album?
Darren Hayes: At the moment, there's 13. And we've got another two songs that will be B-sides. So there's 15 brand new songs kicking around.
Question: Since the new album is being recorded in California, what are you guys doing after long days in the studio?
Darren Hayes: We are having a blast. We're at a place called WallyWorld. We've spent our downtime on motor scooters and 4-wheel-drives playing roller derby. Lots of boy things. I hang out at the local Starbucks, and everybody there knows my name now.
Question: What will the next single be like? A slow love song like "Truly" or upbeat like "I Want You" or "The Animal Song"?
Darren Hayes: We don't know. At the moment, I can just tell you that I love this record. I'm always going to say it's the best thing we've ever done. It's really emotional. There's about a third of the record upbeat and poppy, and another good chunk of it is very emotional. I don't think there's anything on there as innocent as "Truly Madly Deeply." It's very electronic.
Question: Since you guys hit it big, things have changed a lot in your lives... is there anything you would take back, to change any event that has taken place, or are you perfectly happy with your success?
Darren Hayes: I was talking to my mother last night about that. I wouldn't change a single event in my life, good or bad. It makes you who you are. You bend and shape yourself according to your experiences. The present wouldn't be the present day without past experiences, good or bad.
Question: Do you have any other hobbies or aspirations besides music and writing?
Darren Hayes: At the moment, I'm kind of preoccupied with home things. I've just bought an apartment in Manhattan. It's kind of become my baby. I keep saying this, but we get paid to do our hobby. So what I would do in my free time is kind of taken up in my career. So besides my obsession with "Star Wars," I'm kind of a simple guy. There is one thing -- American diners. I'm fascinated with them. From New York, I've driven to Boston and Washington. In California, I drove to Sacramento, just little dives. I visit diners and I compare them to diners in my little diner book I just bought.
Question: Will Daniel be singing in any of the songs on the new album?
Darren Hayes: I don't think so. That's like asking me if I'll be playing any instruments. No.
Question: Darren and Daniel, do you know if Anna Maria LaSpina will be coming with you on tour again? And how is her solo career going?
Darren Hayes: We would love her to come on tour with us. She has a permanent job with Savage Garden if she wants it. Anna is a dear friend of mine, and she's currently working very hard with a publishing company writing songs and working with record companies about a deal. But it takes a long time, so we'll see.
Question: Is any of your new material influenced by acts on the charts today? What kind of music are you into now?
Darren Hayes: I don't know if any of the music on the new album is influenced by the top 40 at the moment. A good chunk of it was influenced by Madonna's "Ray of Light" album. And it was influenced by a group called K's Choice. But really, every time we sit down to write a song, we're drawing from influences from birth right through to the present day. I love songs. For instance, the new TLC song, I think is incredible. So we'll bring that song into the studio and say, "What is it about that song that sounds so magic? And how can we bring the same magic into our music?"
Question: When you tour again in 2000, will you be using the same backup band?
Darren Hayes: Some of them.
Question: If you could do a duet with anyone, who would it be and why?
Darren Hayes: Good question. That's a really good question: Anna Maria LaSpina because she's the only person on the planet that I think my voice fits with like a glove.
Question: What difference do you see in your fans in America compared to those around the world?
Darren Hayes: American fans are less excitable. Very down to earth, and I like that. They can often have conversations with me on the street rather than screaming hysterically. And I love a chat.
Question: In an interview a while back, when asked about what we could look forward to in the new album, Darren replied it would be a mix of pop and trip-hop, and since “The Animal Song” is totally opposite from that, what kind of sound should we be gearing up for?
Darren Hayes: I think there's only one song on the record that has elements of trip-hop. I don't even know if we said that. There's only one trip-hop song. The pop is very pop. And the ballads are very sad. It's not so much a record about music fashion as opposed to songwriting. It's definitely a different style of songwriting on this record. It's more about moods and emotions. At first glance, it's probably going to look like quite a sad album. There's a lot of heartache on there. But overall it's a very positive record. It's a record about getting through and living through difficult situations and coming out on the other side. If anything, "The Animal Song" is like the happy ending to this album.
Question: What's your most memorable event while performing?
Darren Hayes: Usually embarrassing ones. Falling off stage in your hometown is always a favorite. Being mobbed on stage in Miami. Performing to 40,000 Hindus in India.
Question: Is it harder for you guys to work together since you two are in two different locations?
Darren Hayes: No. We are getting along better than ever. We did write together for this album. I think the media hyped it up a lot because I was in America and Daniel was in Australia. But I flew home a few times and Daniel came to San Francisco prior to the recording of the album to finish writing songs with me. And we've since written another two in the studio whilst recording.
Question: Do you take time off for family?
Darren Hayes: There's not a lot of time off in this business. We just took nine months, so that probably qualifies.
Question: What is your personal favorite song that you guys do?
Darren Hayes: It's a brand new song on the album and it's called "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine."
Question: How did you come up with the name Savage Garden and what does the name mean?
Darren Hayes: See Ann Rice.
Question: In what ways have you grown since the debut album?
Darren Hayes: In so many ways. Personally and musically. I'm four years older than I was when it all started. I think that our success and our experience so far has taught us more about life than I've learned in 26 years on the planet. It's been very fulfilling.
Question: Do you guys enjoy meeting with your fans, including chats?
Darren Hayes: I love this. I love a conversation. I'm not always comfortable being a person on a pedestal. It can make a meeting kind of uncomfortable. I'd much rather run into a fan on the street than I would have them meet me backstage, because there's so much more expectation when you're seen as "the pop star."
Question: Hey guys, I really love your music, and I was wondering where you get your inspiration for your lyrics?
Darren Hayes: Everything that we write is based on personal experience. And when we write together, Daniel and I just inspire each other. He comes up with a piece of music and it triggers a memory in me, and we're constantly building off each other.
People Online: We have time for one last question from the audience.
Question: When do you guys estimate the new album will be released, and can you tell us a little bit about it?
Darren Hayes: Hopefully August of this year. There will be a first single from it in July. It's really colorful, very energetic, painfully honest. And I don't know, it just feels like 10 steps from where we've come from. I'm very proud of it at the moment. I just want to say thank you to everyone for your support and your love and your patience. I can't wait to give you this big present and get back on the road and play the songs for you live. Thanks for such a beautiful life.
People Online: Thank you, Darren -- any final comments before you have to leave?
Darren Hayes: I have one final comment. Up until recently, it has been extremely difficult to determine which is the order line and which is the pickup line at a Starbucks. And I'm happy to see that more and more Starbucks are beginning to place signs for the pickup and the ordering. Thank you.

Love is supposed to hurt

Darren Hayes, lead vocalist of Savage Garden, wants to feel that he is in love. Love is not easy. And it is not supposed to be. At least not according to Darren Hayes.
-You are supposed to feel that you are in love.
Darren is a romantic. To him love is almost like a drug.
-I love being in love, I love falling in love. To me, love is faithfulness and loyalty. When I am in love I lose contact with reality, I float around, thinking about nothing else.
-There are those who think that love is just something that you see in the movies. But it's the other way around, really. Everybody deserves love, it's our birthright!
But doesn't it easily get too intense?
-I easily get obsessed with love. And that is not always for the better.
-My first girlfriend and I dated for two and a half year. We did everything together, and we had decided to try to get into a theater collage. I got in, she didn't. So I sacrificed everything for her. Two weeks later she dumped me. That was kind of bitter.
-After that experience I got a bit more careful.
Do you believe that there is one person only that is right for you?
-I used to, but now the idea of a soulmate seems kind of far off. I believe that there are always at least four or five persons on this planet that is right for you. It's not really about finding the right woman, it's more about being willing to love totally unselfishly.
What does the woman of your dreams look like?
-The woman of my dreams is my wife! No, seriously, I have never had some kind of stereotype that I have fallen for. It is more a question of chemistry. But I want a woman to be loyal, funny and intelligent.
Have you found "The love of your life"?
-Yes I have.
How did you know she was right for you?
-It was like coming home. It sounds very silly, but it was like I had been separated from her my whole life, and then we met, and we just clicked! I feel complete together with her. But it is still important not to sacrifice everything for love. It's supposed to be about give and take. Otherwise nothing is good.
