1.Studies in Sardu and Ralphus's relationship

A.Spiritual Dimensions
1.Ying and Yang
2.God the Father(Sardu) God the Son(Ralphus) and God the holy spirit(the love that flows between them)
3.A Cabbalistic perspective-Sabbetian undertones

A recent study on Bloodsucking freaks was titled 'sucking meaning from Blood sucking Freaks',it was a shallow effort and this title was innacurate-this movie is oozing meaning.....you cant avoid it. The relationship between the two main characters is undoubtably central to the main themes of the movie.
The first aspect of their relationship is the fundamental difference between the two characters and yet in finality their intrinsic sameness, their same needs their same longings and hopes.
Sardu undoubtedly emanates from well-heeled stock, a background of priveledge and culture, acholarship and civility, he may well have purchased his theatre with 'old money' or a late inheritance. He is intelligent, astute and appreciates the finer things in life. He could have been a Lawyer or a (regular) merchant if he so desired. He could have enjoyed a conventional life of success and prosperity surrounded by fine things, freinds and family. His sadistic/masochist and homosexual as well as necrophile tendencies became apparent to him at some stage then He either chose his extraordinary life or more likely was driven to it-unable to supress his unconventional and 'grossest fantasies'. He might have grown up in a suppressed environment later to spill over and become reality at 'the Theatre of the Macabre'.
He may well have spent years trying to become a success in conventional theatre but was unable to compromise his artistic values or simply lacked the talent to make it. After anguishing over this for some time he found his artistic bent, love of money, and peversities all satisfied at the theatre bearing his name.
Ralphus story is rather different, it is fairly obvious he comes from the wrong end of town. Of mulatto hispanic background, he probably grew up in a household of modest means, possibly a ghetto type environment. His diminutive height wouldnt have helped him in that difficult world. His background one of misery, dissapointment, hopelesness and rejection. At some point in time he probably realised life held little promise for him-he lived in a world that loved him not.
While Sardu scorned conventional success and turned his back on and squandered the advantages he had-Sardus theatre was in fact Ralfus's best bet. While Sardu scorned normalcy, the theatre was Ralfies way of evening the playing field, of feeling the sensations of power and control as well as wantedness(by Sardu) that other men counted as their birthright. Numerous studies as well as human history (the holocaust, cambodian killing feilds) show that no shortage of otherwise normal people without strong moral foundations can come to enjoy sadistic activity. Ralphus understood that in order to remain in this cocooned world he had to do what master sardu expected of him-he came to enjoy it. One senses that his sadistic tendencies were not deep, no where does he display intrinsically unconventional sexual urges, he never asks to be whipped or punished, he displays no signs of homosexuality (unlike sardu who nowhere displays any 'regular' sexual desires). Ultimately the theatre was a place where he 'got some'.He was happy just to screw the girls-that they gave him the respect he couldnt get on the other side of the theatre entrance- here he was feared , here he was a somebody. His gory duties were a small price.

In Sardus world Ralphus is normal- his very immersion into that world is an attempt at normalcy- Only in this world is he able to be a "regular guy". When he asks Sardu about his billing he is infact pondering the essence of his very being-the measure of his worth in this world.

In the profound scene where Ralphus recieves head from a decapitated head we are confronted with multiple layers of meaning alluding at the above synopsis. Obviously it seems a girl will only fellate Ralph when her body has been severed from her head.-but better head from a head than no head at all. On a deeper level this represents Ralphus's belief that only when the mental is completly removed from the physical ,the spiritual divorced from the material will his bodily shortcomings be overlooked for his spiritual aspect- he smiles with pleasure as this metaphysical bonding is achieved. His whipping of her butt until the mental facilities are severed from the body represents his attempt to get people to overlook the physical for the cerebral. Ralphus the tragic Dwarf has the last laugh- physical reality is subjugated.

Ralphus is ultimately a tragic figure in the most simple sense of the word-yet Sardu is also Tragic, a slave to his own passions, a prisoner in a world of his own creation. His is the tragedy of the Creator- Ralphus's is the tragedy of the created. yet they both ultimately yearn to be loved, to feel warm, to feel wanted. They rely on each other for these longings. In the scene where sardus finger is lightly scratched by one of the wild women, this is tenderly dispayed. Ralphus is so concerned with Sardus Suffering, though it is considerably less traumatic than the suffering of others in the theatre. Sardu plays down the injury (' its just a scratch') so as not to cause ralphus any anguish. Sardu then punishes those who dared intefere with this profound relationship( with ralphus)-he punishes the wild women for causing Ralphus worry. The love between Ralphus and Sardu is infinately deep, platonic and powerful-they love and are loved. They are very different but through the love they share they become as one.

It may be said that Ralphus is the yang in this relationship and sardu is the ying-Ralphus represents earthly wholesome basic attributes, while sardu is more celestial, quirky and escoteric- they counterbalance each other and blend in a perfect harmony.

Some poetry.-by Ralphus to Creasy Silo.-

Creasy Silo
oh narrow mind!
even the famed they will not find
even for a ballet star
the police wont go this far
and in time you soon shall see
just how loving Sardu can be
torture you
kill you too
then tenderly make love to you.

-by Ralphus to girl on stretcher-

Stretch slut! stretched your legs so wide,
for all the boys but one
'twas a tiny little boy who missed out on the fun
but now he's made you centre stage
he's made you a real star
and now its for that little boy
you stretch your legs reeaal far!

"Bloodsucking Freaks" trivia.

1. After his earthshattering performance as Ralphus in Bloodsucking Freaks Louis DeJesus went on to play an Ewok in Return of the Jedi.

2.Seamus O'Brian's performance in Bloodsucking Freaks would have been the beginning of a highly succesful career in film, with all the fame and fortune that brings-alas he was murdered a week after the end of filming Bloodsucking Freaks.....in very mysterious circumstances-we will have more on that story.

3.Prior to playing Ralphus, deJesus fearured in hardcore bizzare pornography-one film he starred in was 'Anal Dwarfs'.

4.Police searching through the household belongings of Curt Cobain after his suicide-found a copy of Bloodsucking Freaks in an old beta videomachine -Curt was quoted as mentioning that watching the film made him want to kill himself.

Young Virgin! oh Girl so sweet
I did catch you on the street
Full of love and charity
But you did not accept me
Young Virgin! full of life
now you pay the greatest price
torture you till your dead
then lovingly get head from head!
-by ralphus in guillotine scene.

Hear today
I laugh at you
Yesterday you laughed at me
didnt know quite what to do
Sardu came to set me free.

Oh what fun
this midget do
gouging eyes and
torturing you
under sardus watchful eye
make you suffer till you die

THE SALON SINGALONG(to the tune of the melody playing in that scene)

Whos for darts
theres a bum shot
a game of backgammon
theres a finger in the pot
all for one
one for all
and Ralphus and sardu are friends

Fine Cigars
goblets filled with wine
a headjob from a head
would go down just fine
all for one
one for all
and ralphus and sardu are friends

Anyone for supper
lets get a bite to eat
sauteed human eyeballs
sounds real neat
all for one
one for all
and Ralphus and sardu are freinds.

Lyrics of the single by metal/rock band "Ralphus" ,'Making love to a head'

Tiny little guy with a great big heart,
loves salon games and poon darts,
making love to a head
making love to a head
unzips his pants when your dead
making love to a head
making love to a head

Further studies.

1.Theological aspects of Sardu and Ralphus's relationship

2.The Apocalyptic idea in Bloodsucking freaks.

Towards the end of the movie it seemed as if the utopia, the highly idealistic, conceptual and symbolic world that Sardu had created was being threatened from all sides-a certain extremism, defiance and realization that the end is near had crept in. A take no prisoners approach was adopted. The wild women were starved. Sardu took on the mode of a penitent, a savage appeasing an angry god. a climax was being built up. Like a cornered zealot, Sardu deluded himself. Yet after having made love to an expired Creasy Silo, he realised that his holy work in this spiritual plane had been done- a laughter erupted-the laugh of a man who had fulfilled all his tasks- and was ready to be elevated to a higher sphere- Sardu would reach Nirvana- Ralphus would start life anew as the man he always wanted to be- of normal height. an end-new beginnings.
NEW!!SARDU AS SPIRITUAL GIANT
Ultimately this film is about the need for love that exists in each and every one of us.
In this synopsis Sardu is a highly moralistic, idealistic being-a spiritualy perfect religious-purist that has create a perfect world-a world where the inner love and goodness inherent in mankind shines through-uncluttered by the straightjacket middle-class morality places on us.
Nowhere is this idea of the need for love in all of us displayed more touchingly than in the scene where the "wild woman" smears herself with the bloody heart of the dead doctor-the only actual bad-guy in the film.
It is interesting how Sardu designates the women as "wild"-is not wild a synonym for free? Is not a wild animal one who roams the forests in liberty-not in a production-line state as the domestic beast-to be killed at will for profit.
Has not Sardu in fact freed these women from the constraints of polite society-free to be one with their passions and insticts-not bound by morality designed so an elite can milk us. Are we who dont live in an unlit filthy underground dungeon-feeding on human remains-are we really free.
Do we not spend are lives searching for the perfect partner -the exact combination of traits that might bring us joy-and when we find that person are really happy?
Yet this "caged" woman finds the purest simplest love in a mere bloody disected organ-she passionately smears herself with the blood.
Sardu that wise-sage has created this manifestation of goodness on a level higher than we ever could.
The symolism of the heart needs no explanation.
Sardus desire to get rid of the Doctor comes from the deepest repulsion he feels for one who kills for mere sadistic pleasure- Sardu kills to release the highest of emotions and ideals. Nothing is arbitrary, everything is at one with his spiritual quest. In realising that these heights of spirituality can only be tapped in the context of the world he has created-he does so with a heavy heart-the fact that he on his quest for the purest sublime goodness has taken on the appearance of a sadistic murder only serves to highlight his martyrdom and self-sacrifice-he will be the most hated man, the one the people regard as evil and he will die being percieved as such-with little reward for his holy work-it doesnt matter, only goodness does. the doctor however is sadistic scum-and truly worthy of Sardus and Ralphus's (Sardus disciple) disdain.
We witness how this Wild woman is able to connect so profoundly with this animals heart -evil negated by pure goodness -Sardu smiles knowingly, his holy work is acheived.

On a deeper level Sardu is aspiring to a God-like existence. it is interesting to note how an entire eco-system and foodchain is created in the Theatre(mini-world) of the Macabre-nothing is wasted-urine digested-expired actress's eaten, eyeballs sauteed-the participants of this proud and noble endevour are rendered as one-actress's acheive more that fame but immortality -they live on , beat death survive in the bodies of those who digest them.

As a symbolic purifying ritual Ralphus eats a pan of eyeballs-to signify the eyes of the gods that watch over us-he combines salt to signify "the salt of the Earth" the mortal and immortal are made as one at Sardus theatre.

OH VERY SHORT - By Cut Stevens

Oh very short what will you leave us this time
You're only dancing on this earth for a short while
And though your dreams may toss and turn you now
They will vanish away like your best oshkosh overalls
Denim blue fading up to the sky
And though you want him(Sardu) to last
Forever you know he never will
(You know he never will)
And the guillotine-sessions make the goodbye harder still

Oh very short what will you leave us this time
There'll never be a better chance to change your mind
And if you want this world to see a better day
Will you carry the words of love with you
Will you ride the great white sex-slave into heaven
And though you want to last
Forever you know you never will
You know you never will
And the goodbye makes the journey harder still

Oh very short what will you leave us this time
You're only dancing on this earth for a short while
Oh very short will you leave us this time
