Another band memeber of Zwan, he's the third guitarist. Originally from New Jersey, former front man of Skunk where he played guitar and sang. Slunk also consisted of Matt Quigley on bass and Claude Coleman on drums. Skunk was formed in 1989 and had released two records then in 1991 the band split. Matt Sweeney then joined a band called Wider for a little while in 1992. After the split of wider, Sweeney and James Lo, who was the drummer for Wider, formed another band named Chavez along with guitarist Clay Tarver and bassist Davey Hoskins. Hoskins, who later left the band, was then replaced by Scott Masciarelli. Chavez was then signed to Matador records where they released three albums and one EP before another split in 1997.
Matt Sweeney has also worked with Chris Hartford, Robert Pollard, Jason Jones, Greg Frey, Wilbo Wright, Dave Dunton, Brian Mueller, Cat Power, Sim Cain, Ed Wilson, Adam Lasus, Dave Dreiwitz, Lorraine Bowen, Kevin Salem, and Guided by Voices.
