In 1998, when SeaWorld Orlando pulled the wraps off its massive Journey To Atlantis flume ride/rollercoaster/dark ride, the park took a giant leap into the realm of first-class thrillmongering. The Southeast's paean to undersea fauna was no longer just a place to visit after you'd explored everything Disney and Universal had to offer. But had it truly become an "Adventure Park?" Not quite yet.

It most certainly will be come next Spring. Following the lead established by its sister park in San Antonio, Texas, this SeaWorld is going to make a bid for our attention with something every Adventure Park needs: a slammin' rollercoaster. And SWO's second major thrill ride is gonna be a monstrous coaster in every sense of the word.

Rising from the depths in a frothy rage, Kraken, a mythological sea-beast once held captive by the god Poseidon, will burst onto the scene as Orlando's longest, tallest and fastest rollercoaster. Better still, the Bolliger & Mabillard-designed delight, yet another thrill ride to borrow from ancient legends of gods and monsters, will be the second of that company's revolutionary "Floorless" coasters to open anywhere, following hot on the heels of Six Flags Great Adventure's wild Medusa (see train concept rendering at right).

We'll board the multi-hued Kraken after wandering through its lair past see-through eggs containing live eels, the critter's slithery offspring. Diving over the edge of a 149-foot-tall peak, Kraken will scream to a top speed of 65 miles per hour down a 144-foot drop and crank through seven inversions, including a Cobra Roll, a Zero-G Roll and several vertical loops. A good part of the 4,177-foot-long course will rise over a lagoon and we can expect three underground plunges, one of which will take us deep into the beast's subsurface hideout, creating a wave that'll soak bystanders. Very nice!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

It seemed just a matter of time before SWO went and got itself a coaster, but I wouldn't have dared to hope it would be something on this glorious scale. Medusa has already proven itself to be one of the best front-seat rides in the world and Kraken will stand taller, stretch longer and run faster than that amazing piece of work. And with Kraken, the three new B&M coasters at Islands Of Adventure (Hulk and the Dragons), and the two B&M coasters at Busch Gardens Tampa (Montu and Kumba), Central Florida will be more densely packed with B&M-crafted joy than any other area in the known Universe. Spanky!
