The hottest property in world swimming, Michael Klim has risen to superstar status in Australia with his awesome performance at the World Swimming Championships in
Perth in January 1998.
His record of seven medals in seven events including four gold medals rates as one of the most outstanding performances by an Australian at an international swim meet.
Not content to rest on his World Championship laurels, the following week Michael set out and broke the world short
course record in the 100m Butterfly twice, once in the heats and then in the final, at a World Cup meet in Sydney.
After a fantastic 1997 and a brilliant start to 1998, Michael found himself as the world record holder in the 100m butterfly and ranked number one in the world in the 100m
butterfly and 200m freestyle.
At the Commonwealth Games Trials in April 1998 Michael qualified first in the 100m freestyle and second in a further four events; the 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m
butterfly and 100m butterfly. His success has ensured a packed schedule at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in
later this year where he is sure to build on his World Championship successes.
With Sydney 2000 looming on the horizon, Michael Klim has plenty of opportunities to demonstrate his exceptional swimming talent.
