Flood blood splattered on his armor. KarMegus had just stuck 3 Juggernauts, and that left 5. He took out his Brute Shot, and took out 2 more. These things were slow and stupid, but sure packed a hard punch. KarMegus got hit by one and he began seeing stars. But he raised his Brute Shot and took out another one. Irk and Cassidy had already taken care of the others. KarMegus sighed. He removed his helmet. Drops of sweat and blood slid down his forehead. He leaned against the cliff wall, and everything got dark...

Irk sat up. He wasnt in the desert anymore. He was in a laboratory. Medical equipment lay on trays next to him. He still had his armor, with the exception of his arm which was bandaged up. He looked at the screen which kept his vital signs. He looked along the celings and spotted a camera staring at him. In several minutes men in white lab coats came in.

"How are you feeling Irk?" The woman in front asked him.
"Well, I can sit up, whats going on?" Irk answered.
"Can you move all of your fingers?" She asked.
Irk flexed his hand, with a little pain and effort. "Yes, but, whats going on?"
"You are in the hospital. You suffered a severe injury from that brute. But everything is good now. He is dead and rotting. As for the marine with you, he is dead from heat exaustion."
Irk thought for a moment trying to recollect some memory. "No... The brute was helping. He killed some desert monsters....."
The woman answered, "You must be delirous. Just try to rest, be silent and rest."

At that moment Irk saw a nurse inject his arm and he fell into dreams.

Darkness... KarMegus shot up. He looked around. He was in a cell of some sort. There were no guards, and he attempted to bend the bars of his cell. Normally he would look around, and figure out where he was, but he was in no mood now. No matter what he did, no matter how close he was, he always ended up losing. He was at the Ark, but ended up at some city. He was nearly to the Ark, and now he's here. He bent the bars, and ended up ripping them off. He slid throught the space, and saw his helmet in a nearby garbage can. He took it out and slid it on. He never felt right without it on. He always felt vulnerable. He took a deep breath, and looked around. There were several cells in this place, and he saw one of the Humans he was with in one of them. The Human jumped up. "Hey! How'd you get out?!" KarMegus ripped the bars off the cell. "Oh." stated Cassidy. KarMegus walked to a door at the end of the room, followed closely by Cassidy.

Raynor and 213 conversed quietly. "We need to get inside and find out if they are breaking a deal with the covenant. There is alot more Flood than covenant on this section of the planet." 213 explained the upcoming mission to Raynor.
"How are we going to get in? Isnt it guarded by a ton of men, along with some of the military?" Raynor asked, but 213 answered Raynor simply, "Even you know how to get in, its just a little messy." 213 showed Raynor a diagram of the structure. "The front lobby is above ground, while the rest of the structure is underground. We have to get in, and onto the elevator before they notice we were there. From inside we can free some prisoners, I have an idea that we will need help getting back out."

Raynor grinned at the prospect of bursting into a room and blowing everything up, being near invincible the entire time, it was always a nice way of thought. But he shuddered at the thought of all the innocent men, who didnt know what, or who they were working for.

KarMegus searched his memory. He remembered fighting a group of Flood Juggernauts, then something happened, and now he was here. This place was very unfamiliar and KarMegus didn't like it. He thought again that it was useless, that he should just give up. Cassidy stopped at a door, and walked inside. It was of weapons, including KarMegus' Carbine and Brute Shot. There was still plenty of ammo for the Carbine, but the Brute Shot was empty, so he picked up a shotgun instead. Cassidy shouldered a Rocket Launcher, chuckling to himself, thinking of the destruction it would cause. He also picked up a Battle Rifle. They left the room, and found the exit to the building. They exited, and saw the building was in a desolate area. They were now lost.

Irk blinked and saw the rom fall into focus. The tables around him were full of instruments, and he saw a plate of his armor sitting on one of his tables. It was from one of his arms, he looked where the armor should be missing, and a new plate was welded in. The newer plate was made of a substance he couldnt reconize, it looked obsidian, but still, man-made. He looked around at the computer screens, "Serilyvian." Below a list of instructions read, "The new wrist armor, gives the spartan, a red plasma based blade, that will extend once he wants it to. It is stronger than the covenant energy version, and it has show a resistance to faltering."
Irk felt himself think for it to come on, and sure enough, the blade came out. It emitted a strange reddish glow as well. He cut the bonds, and sat himself up, then he ran over, and sliced the camera in half. He didnt want to be kept in the room, he wanted to report back to duty, and he was sure they would try to stop him.

Cassidy cursed loudly. "I am tired of this crap! We are lost in the African desert! We are going to die in here! And for what? We have to be all noble and stop the Flood. But how do we do that? We activate the Halos. Which is what I was trying to prevent a week ago! We have no food, no water, no nothing! And where is that Spartan? And that other guy, what was his name... Raynor! And Sanchez? Where are they? Are they dead? Am I next? Does every Human you travel with end up mysteriously dead? ANSWER ME!" KarMegus stared intently at Cassidy. He dropped to his knees. Cassidy appeared confused. "Kill me, Human." "What? No, we don't need to do that, we just need a plan. That's all. In fact, I bet that if-" "If you value your life, you will kill me now, use me for food, and find more Humans, and live in your doomed existance, fighting a war in a vain attempt to stop the Flood." KarMegus was tired if this as well, and was surrendering. But he was doing it for the good of the Human, for KarMegus had come to like Cassidy, as he did with Sanchez. Cassidy raised his SMG, then dropped it on the ground, and lifted KarMegus up. He smiled, as did KarMegus, and they began to discuss a way to get to the Ark. Their discussion was interrupted, as an Elite Ranger raised its plasma rifles and took them prisoner. They did not resist. KarMegus recognized the long burn mark on the armor. It was Lako 'Nurammee. Lako was once stationed with KarMegus, and they had a brief discussion. It was before he was an Honor Guard, and he was not sure if 'Nurammee recognized him. "Hello, Lako." was all he said. 'Nurammee looked back, inspected him. "I see you became an Honor Guard, KarMegus." KarMegus and 'Nurammee always had respect for each other, and that respect will continue, no matter what the circumstances are.

"The two spots we found the caverns were in africa, and in the desert here, in arizona. You should have read that in the report doctor."

Irk had been listening to the conversation from under the shaft. The humans had found something that they couldnt activate. A large weapon, something alien. Whatever it was, it was living, and it would reguarly take explorers down into the depths of a very large cavern, where they were never seen again. Exploring squads now needed to use flamethrowers to ward off the arms of the creature. After awhile, if the squad had managed to get as far in, past the creatures reach, they would be greeted by a portal, where it led, noone knew, but it was still a portal.

"Whatever it is, im not down here by my own free will, another scientist asked me to come, he had the support of some men, with guns. So what am I supposed to do past this door?" The scientist was clearly nervous.

The guard supplied him with an answer. "Well, you will go through some of the alien hallways, Seril, thats what the metal is called, or rather, thats what people who dont know how to purnounce it call it. Go on your way there
Dr. Gerick."

Gerick opened the door and went through. It closed behind him, and the alarm went off. Irk picked up the frequency, some force was attacking, and the force had already made its way down into the main generator room.

Raynor covered 213's back as 213 hacked into the security system, they had made it this far in, they werent stopping now. If the power was turned off, they would be able to sneak around, without the loss of many of the guards. Raynor had tried to knock out the guards, but the armor was too strong, and he frequently killed them. Raynor didnt like it all to well.

Cassidy watched in awe as something crashed down into the atmosphere. it had been about 15 minutes since they were captured, and were at the base. KarMegus stared intently at the object. "Flood," he muttered. Cassidy knew this was their chance to escape. There captors would be too busy fighting Flood to bother with them. The craft, it now appeared, was an escape pod, off of a Human Freighter. It could hold 20 Humans, and who knows how many Flood. This is not good, thought Cassidy. The pod crashed, and a cloud of smoke and sand surrounded it. At least 20 Elites and 6 Hunters went and surrounded it, including 'Nurammee. 5 Elites and 2 Hunters remained, watching Cassidy, KarMegus, and the other prisoners, several Jackals and Drones. Cassidy was dead silent, waiting for something to happen. 'Nurammee opened the pod door, and out came a single Human. Cassidy recognized him as Corporal Steven Foreman, an experienced soldier. Cassidy sighed. Although he was glad Foreman was still alive, his escape plan was interrupted. And Flood may never attack this place. He was trapped. Cassidy noticed a large gash on Foreman's arm, as he motioned to the back of the Pod. 3 Spec Ops Elites went in, and a large swarm of Flood poured out. The Elites ran over to help, as did the Hunters. Cassidy and KarMegus, followed by the Drones and Jackals, sprinted out toward the mountains.

KarMegus doubled over, gasping for air. They had sprinted nearly a mile, and he was exhausted. Cassidy followed a few seconds later, and dropped to his knees. The Jackals were shot down after they attempted to escape. KarMegus didn't know the fate of the Drones, but he was sure that they had escaped. Cassidy got up, still panting. "Now what?" KarMegus thought a moment. "We keep moving. We cannot afford to be caught again. At all. I recognize this mountain, we are nearing the Ark. Let's go."

421 had lost the Meddler and Reclaimer. Protocol said that in a situation like this, to go to the Ark, and activate the Sentinals and Enforcers. All possible Flood hosts must be terminated.

Irk, had actually decided to goto the scientist and help him through his little problem. Gerrick hadnt been at all suprised to see Irk. "Finally! An escort! how wonderful!"

Irk had nodded and added, "I want to see this as well, just tell me where to lead you to."

Gerrick wasnt at all a strong looking man, with spindly legs, glasses, and the typical labcoat. He had a suprisingly stout voice however. And when he spoke, Irk had expected a soldier saying it. "Okay, well it looks like this tunnel heads straight down, so just keep a lookout on the front?"

"Whatever you want doctor."

The lights turned off as the hacking routine finished. Raynor heard some guards coming in from the front, and he got his rifle ready. Or at least they sounded like guards.

Drones of every shape and size fluttered in, not carrying weapons. However, in the dark, it was hard to discrern one from another. Nevertheless, Raynor fired into the mess, hoping to hit something worth hitting. 213 also joined in. And after a minute, the melee was over. The first wave was dead.

Raynor and 213 wasted no time sprinting out of the generator room, the next destination was the research labs.

KarMegus had done it. He recognized the strange shape of the mountains as the ones he had been to before. They had arrived at the Ark. But KarMegus heard a strange noise. It was strangely familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on what it was. As he was trying to think, He felt a burning sensation on his chest. "Sentinals!" He yelled. "What are- ARG!" Cassidy had apparently never fought against sentinals, and was caught off guard. KarMegus raised his Carbine and with several well placed shots, took out the attacking Sentinals. Cassidy grasped his chest, and dropped to one knee. KarMegus could only watch. He remembered the first time he was shot by a sentinal. It hurts worse when your not expecting it. KarMegus waited until Cassidy got up. He handed Cassidy his side arm, a Plasma Pistol. "Charge it before you shoot them, it kills them faster. And there may be Enforcers. Keep your Rocket Launcher ready."

421 knew that the Meddler was back. But it had failed too many times, so 421 was taking this into his own hands. It would not be allowed to activate the Ark, because 214 had a different plan, one that will not fail.

Irk and Gerrick were in the darkest part of the cavern now, and it was then, they heard footsteps. "Whos there?" Gerrick called out.

Irk was pleased to see two spartans running in after them, the lead one spoke. "Hello, it seems you dont realize who we are? I am Raynor, and this is my buddy. His name would be meaningless to you, probably, just call him 213."

Irk, who was now a bit troubled, replied, "I hope we can trust you, we can probably get all the help we need from you two. Well, just keep an eye on the six."

Raynor nodded.

It eventually was dark enough that they turned the shoulder lights on. Irk heard it, a small sliding noise. Or was it just the footsteps of the new comrades. He pushed it out of his mind. Then it came again. Now it was louder. Irk took a look back at the rest of the squad. They must have heard it too, Gerrick for one, was taking deep breaths, and when he saw Irk looking at him he asked, "Whats wrong?"

A giant hand looking claw suddenly popped up and grabbed Raynor around the chest, it started to drag him in, but Irk leaped onto it and started slicing away. The skin was scaly and the arm was wider than Irk himslef. A second arm came out and grabbed Irk. 213 leaped up and got its rifle and started firing into the arm that Raynor was trapped in. A bellow came from the creature, and it dropped Raynor and pulled Irk into the darkness.

Silence.

KarMegus and Cassidy walked to the entrance of the Ark. There were Sentinals and enforcers everywhere. Before KarMegus and Cassidy could fire, 421 floated out of the Ark. "Oh hello. You're just in time. While the Sentinals eliminate all possible Flood hosts, you can help me with this. Please, come in." KarMegus and Cassidy silently followed. "Now, we need to reprogram this piece of technology, but the Flood are near. It will take an hour, but by then the Flood will have surely began their attack. So please, assist the Sentinals and I will spare you for now. And- whats this? There are several Reclaimers attempting to get here through that portal. Take care of them when they arrive, won't you?"

Gerrick had fainted and 213 carryed him through the rest of the tunnel. The lights had turned back on in some spots, so the use of the flashlights were no longer nessasary. A couple of marines greeted them. "Woah, looks like we got some visitors? Brought some food with you? Huh? Please?"

Gerrick had a candy bar in his pocket that he tossed at one of them just so he would shut up. "Thats all."

Most of the marines chuckled and all pulled something to eat out of theier pockets. When the leader confronted Gerrick he looked fully awake and very happy. "You the scientist they sent to look at the gate?"

Gerrick nodded, "Yes, but I must ask, what do you eat down here?"

The commander laughed, "Well, there is a cave fungus that lives down here, its quite tasty. We have no idea how it lives down here, but we dont honestly care, beacuse it also seems to give off light, its quite nice down here."

Some marines led Gerrick to a strange twisting portal, Raynor and 213 stayed to look at it. With some tweaking and trying, it shuddered onward. With the activation, came three crablike robots, that floated. The crabs opened fire upon 213 with lazers, but the marines were ready. All three were down within a couple of seconds. The marines used bullets enhanced with a special ammunition. They gave 213 and Raynor a couple clips for the rifles. Gerrick recieved a pistol with a clip of the special bullets.

They ventured through the portal into the unknown.
