There was a large creature, obviously of Flood origins, in the middle of the cavern. It was surrounded by Flood Warriors, and the moment Cassidy and KarMegus entered, they all faced the 2. Another heart-stopping howl, and the Flood attacked....
Maybe that howl is from the original creature, whoever's soul was in the body before the Flood infected them. Maybe it's their expression of everlasting pain, maybe its the last part of humanity, of life, in the Flood....
KarMegus awoke with a start. He was wrapped in something.... a tentacle. KarMegus screamed at the creature. "Release me!" KarMegus was lifted up to the creature's face. "No, I will not. You are to stay here." "KarMegus was infuriated. "Release me Parasite! Or then kill me, but I will not stay here." "Oh, you will die eventually. But for now I need you alive." "Alive for what?" "The old Gravemind is dead, and I am the new. As soon as I am completed, you will be used as a host." "What-" KarMegus looked closely around the cavern. There were red lights at the top that provided light. He saw dead bodies everywhere, being gathered by the Flood into the corners. "Sine the Gravemind is dead, we cannot produce our spores. But when I am finished and take his place, our conquest will continue."

Gerrick wandered through some empty hallways that he found, he still had no idea how he got there. It must have been hours, until he found the next big room. There was a second one, only slightly smaller. A second Gravemind. One that held several brutes, and a marine. Gerrick decided to save the marine. Among the numerous bodies on the floor he found a sniper rifle. He would pick off the covenant he didnt want existing, then he would send two rockets into the massive head.
He picked a target and zoomed in. He had a hard time aiming in on the brute's head, and when he pulled the trigger. He missed the head, but hit the tentacle holding him.

Cassidy watched as KarMegus dropped to the ground. A horde of Flood went in the direction the Sniper shot came from. Cassidy saw bad things coming from this, because the remaining Flood went after KarMegus.

Gerrick struggled to try to take a second shot at the tentacle that had the marine on it, and finally hit the tentacle dropping the marine. Now the flood was coming on him. He took the rocket launcher and fired it into the mass coming for him. The blast also took him unexpectedly. He flew backwards and landed on his back. He got back up again, and saw that he had barely made a dent, now he fired a second shot, in the same fashion of the first on, and after getting back up, he noticed that there was no use. He pulled out the pistol he kept with him and fired it into the mass, and it turned out to be more powerful than he had thought. Still it was no use. There were more than he could shoot.

KarMegus threw a punch at the nearest Flood, who happened to have all of his supplies. Finally, a change of luck, he though. He picked up the Brute Shot and unloaded on the Flood surrounding him. He didn't have time to reload so he used the blade on the end, meleeing any unfortunate enough to cross his path. He eventually picked up his Carbine, after killing the Flood attacking him, and tried to help Cassidy save whoever saved them.

Cassidy was up a split second after he had fallen, picking up a fallen shotgun, and ran to the direction the Sniper shots originated from. He shot all the Flood he could, breaking through the horde to see a scientist. Cassidy didn't have time to wonder how he was saved by a scientist, so he immediately turned around and began killing Flood. The scientist reloaded as Cassidy shot, and shot as Cassidy reloaded. This continued for nearly 10 minutes. KarMegus had joined them, shot with the scientist as Cassidy reloaded. Cassidy ran out of shells, so he picked up a fallen Warrior's Energy Sword. KarMegus had shot it down as it lunged toward Cassidy. He was never very religious, but as he picked up the sword, he said a silent prayer to whatever would listen. He had never used an Energy Sword before, and knew it wouldn't be easy. He lunged at the Flood continuously. It soon became easier, and he got the hang of it. But there were too many Flood, and they needed to retreat. So, as KarMegus threw 3 Grenades in the entrance the Flood were coming from, they turned and sprinted into the unknown.

Gerrick felt a snap from behind. Then he felt two more, then he was carried away, everything lost focus. But only for a few seconds, suddenly he was dropped, and dragged some feet before something got into a fight over him, was it an elite? Whatever was carrying him won, and then got him to a spot where he lied down in the corner, and in the corner of his eye, he could see the old elites fighting the flood, and he could even see Zarvha running into the mix, energy sword in hand.

Irk looked at his map, in order to get to a position to use his radio, they would have to get to the top of the structure. In order to arrive there, they would have to fight through a couple of miles of desert, and then through an old city, where the walls had recently broken down, it was said there were a couple of tanks and warthogs there. Those would probably help them traverse the other thirty miles to the structure base. Then they would have to go five miles up the side of the mountain. There, would be a radio station. "Salvation" as the sarge took to calling it.

They were back in the room where the Index was supposed to be, but the scientist was gone. Cassidy was sure he had followed them through the tunnel.... But they didn't have time for this. KarMegus signaled for the Phantom to be ready as soon as possible. They could hear the gruesome howls of the Flood, and they needed to get off the Ring. Cassidy readied the Energy Sword he was carrying. The ran past a small group of Flood, which were immediately slashed or shot. They had almost gotten to the Phantom when they were greeted by 10 Flood Juggernauts. Cassidy attempted to slash one, but the Sword shorted out, and he was left weaponless. Likewise, KarMegus' attacks seemed to not do anything. They heard a deafening howl, the loudest one Cassidy had ever heard, and thousands of Infection Forms came from behind them. The Juggernauts closed in on them. Reanimated bodies of the dead came from everywhere. Cassidy switched to the Battle Rifle he had picked up earlier, and desperately began shooting. The odds were 1,000,000 to 1, but Cassidy and KarMegus tossed grenades and shot into the oncoming horde, not accepting defeat. They understood they were most likely going to die, but were going to take as many of these bastards out as they could.

Zarvha led the troop out of the tunnel, and found the enemy convoy, but, there was also an entire flood force here, Hulamae didnt want to pass up the chance to get so many flood accounted for. Soon, the infection forms were getting mowed down, and there were still thousands more however. Zarvha kept Gerrick in the specter, but he didnt seem able to wake Gerrick up. Now they were closing in on the enemy, but, unlike Zarvha expected, they werent ordered to fire upon them, instead, capture them.

Irk had started down into the dunes of the desert, with the squad leading up the rear. There were tons of trashed vehicles, and on closer inspection, there were a couple enemies making cover out of them. A brute popped up and fired at Irk's squad, who all jumped behind any cover they could find, that was nearby Irk.
Three other brutes and two jackals fired at them. "Lay down a field of fire on them, try to keep them ducking, I hope Irk can get around to flank them. Can't you Irk?"
"Yes, I can." Irk started firing, he could hear the rest of the squad firing at the enemies as well, so he started sprinting to the next set of cover. The rest of the squad kept up the firing, and soon, the enemy stopped the intense return fire they had kept before. They were effectively pinned, "Alright, sarge, get your guys moving up, and toss a couple of grenades if you can!"
"Yes sir, you heard the man." The sarge led his men to another set of vehicles, and they started up again once they were effectively behind cover. Irk saw Uldaman toss a grenade over, and a jackal and a brute scattered out of the way. The squad fired at the jackal killing it, but they only killed the Brute. Irk headed to a good flanking position from the right, and proceeded to start up his firing, while another grenade came into the position. This time they all scattered, and there was enough fire that killed them all. Now they had another mile or so to go.

Cassidy aimed his Battle Rifle at the Warriors' chests, hitting the Infection Form inside. Him and KarMegus were backed in a corner, and Cassidy didn't like being backed in a corner. He shot as fast as he could, and when he went to reload, he discovered he was out of ammo. KarMegus passed him his Brute Shot, and Cassidy began shooting again. But the Brute Shot soon ran out of ammo as well, as did KarMegus' Carbine. Cassidy and KarMegus threw their remaining grenades. They quickly ran out, and the Flood kept coming. They had no choice but to raise their fists, and melee the dirty bastards to death. "This is suicide!" Cassidy yelled to KarMegus. "Rag Forg Guttree Do. Die for what you believe in!" KarMegus yelled back to Cassidy. He pondered the quote for a moment, and then began pounding on a Flood Human Warrior. Cassidy could've sworn he knew the Flood's Host, which sickened him to no end. The Warrior forearmed Cassidy, and he went flying into the wall. KarMegus came soon after. Even when they were on the ground, they were smashing Infection Forms. Cassidy saw a break in the formation, as did KarMegus, and they rushed through it. They came to a small cavern, and pushed a large boulder into the entrance. They knew it wouldn't stay there for long. Cassidy spotted 3 dead marines, leaned up against the wall. Cassidy was gathering their tags, when he saw one of them was holding a bottle of Scotch. He took it, and brought it to KarMegus, on the other side of the cavern. He took a swig, and handed the bottle to KarMegus. He appeared confused with it for a moment, took a drink, and instantly acquired a taste for the strong alcohol. "What was that thing you said? Back there?" KarMegus chuckled. "Rag Forg Guttree Do. It means 'die for what you believe in.'" Cassidy nodded. He raised the Scotch. "To new alliances," and took another swig. KarMegus did the same. By now, they were a little drunk, and definitely wouldn't be able to fight the Flood. KarMegus cleared his throat. "Whatever the true faith is, if there's an after-life, I hope to see you there, old friend." Cassidy laughed. "Same here, Kar. You have changed my life, changed my faith, changed me." They laughed some more. Despite the situation, Cassidy was having fun. "Wait," Cassidy said. "It's been a little too quiet. In the old movies, whenever it gets too quiet, somethings about to happen. Oh my God, what am I saying? I am totally hammered." Suddenly, the boulder in the cavern entrance exploded, and bits of it flew everywhere. KarMegus and Cassidy stood in the middle of it all, swaying back and forth with their fists raised. There was a large group of Elites with Energy Swords standing at the entrance. "We're saved!" Cassidy shouted.

Zarvha glanced at the odd sight. A brute and a marine both together drinking scotch. He let out a deep laugh, and the other elites followed suite. The brute looked at them, and Zarvha could tell he was drunk. Zarvha walked forward, noticing that both were unarmed, and any brute that a marine would get drunk with, had to be better than the ordinary brute. Zarvha beckoned them forward, "Come along, we need to get out of here."
The marine nodded, and Zarvha decided he would get to know them later. Gerrick had just woken up and proceeded to follow.

KarMegus' head was killing him. "What was in that drink?" he slurred. Cassidy shrugged, holding his chest. KarMegus vomited. All the Elites laughed, and KarMegus felt terrible. An Elite pushed him. "We must keep moving. Hurry up." KarMegus didn't want to hurry up. He wanted to rest. But he forced himself to move. They made it to a group of Specters. The Commander counted the everyone. "It'll be a tight fit, but we'll make it." KarMegus looked appalled. "No, follow me." The Commander sighed but followed KarMegus. They arrived at the Phantom soon. All the Elites applauded, a fast way off the Ring. The Nav Brutes saw them and activated the Grav Lift. When they all got up there, the lead Nav Brute said "Thought we lost you, sir. You don't look too good. What happened there?" KarMegus sighed. He said he'd explain it once they reached the Ascendant Justice. He planned, of course, to leave out the part with the Scotch.

Gerrick felt he had to apologize, to the brute, who had ended up helping him survive. He cautiously approached the brute, and ignites a conversation, "Thank you for saving my life."
KarMegus chuckled. He was still feeling a small buzz from the whiskey, and decided to take advantage of it and humble himself, something very rare, especially to a human "It was Cassidy and the Elites. I just killed things. They are the thinkers"
"Yes, but I had intended to kill you with the first shot, and it seemed appropriate that I apologize"
Normally, KarMegus would have lifted the human off the ground and smashed it within an inch of its life. But he was feeling strange "You did, eh? Well, my luck really seems to be improving then."
"Or my bad aim delivered salvation" Gerrick replied.
"Who knows?" KarMegus said, laughing. He was taking a liking to the human. Not many would admit an attempted murder right to the persons face
By then, the ship captain approached Kar, in order to ask him to help the Ascendant Justice grant them help.

Back on the Ascendant Justice, KarMegus had to explain to Truth what was going on. He told him about the new Gravemind, and how the Flood can make Infection Forms again. And he mentioned that 421 must have some sort of plan, because he hasn't activated the Ark yet, something that he knew any Monitor would've done as soon as possible. "Are you sure?" Truth asked. "I have been talking with the Holy Oracle, he said there is a chance we can beat the Flood." KarMegus couldn't believe what he was saying. "We may be able to defeat the Flood, but it is in their programming to want to activate the Ark on such a large outbreak. I am sure-" "That is enough, KarMegus." Truth interrupted. "The Holy Oracle says we need to gather all the Oracles, from every Halo."

Gerrick felt extremely nervous being so near an enemy that hated humanity. As it turned out, he never actually had to go onto the other ship though, he just stayed on Hulamae's ship. He didnt know how the conversation was going though, and it frightened him.

"The Oracle says we must go to each Halo, fire upon it, and leave a single ship down there, accompanied by the Nav Brutes." KarMegus knew what the Monitors were planning. They were attempting to get all the Flood onto Earth. But why do that? Truth grinned. "We are planning to release the Drinol on Earth now. It was the Oracle's idea." No, thought KarMegus.

The squad had another mile of debris strewn land to trek through. Irk had seen with binoculars that there was at least three more enemy squads.
"Alright. We have another mile, before I see the city walls, and there are at least twelve jackals inbetween us and there. We will try to find a way around them, and hopefully, we will get to the city. Keep in mind, they wont expect to see any marines here, so we may have the element of suprise if we are detected."
Everyone nodded or gave a, "Yes Sir." And they were off. It looked like a valley of sand, along with the metal, both alien and human, there was plenty of cover, and plenty of sand. Sarge had a sniper rifle that he handed to Irk, but it only had two clips, which meant 8 shots. As they reached the bottom, Irk noticed an elite huddling in the wreckage of a wraith.
"Over here, hey, over here!" Irk motioned towards it. The elite opened it's eyes and responded.
"How many are there?"
"I see about twelve jackals."
"Jackals? Oh, yes, Jackals, well, I have three plasma gernades and a carbine, I think I may be able to help." The elite made it's way to their position settling right next to Uldaman who was shuddering in fear at the size of the elite. Irk was'nt suprised, he was noticing the difference too.
"Alright, ill have the marines set down a line of fire at the position, then you can come with me to flank them. You will have to toss some plasmas into the jackal hideout to get them moving though."
The elite nodded, and Irk gave the signal. The marines started up the firing, and Irk, followed by the elite, made their way to the next set of cover. Then to another set, and to a final set, where they had a clear view of the jackals. The elite tossed the plasma gernade and started firing with his carbine, and Irk took a shot at one who was a distance away from the mess, he scored a headshot too. Soon, the jackals were all dead. They continued down to the city walls.

KarMegus knew it was useless to argue. He walked silently down the corridor to his quarters, but was yanked into a room on the way. He quickly turned around and grabbed his attacker by the neck and pinned them to the wall before realizing it was Cassidy. KarMegus released him, and Cassidy took something out of his pocket. It took KarMegus a moment to realize it was the Index. Cassidy made a sshh motion with his finger, and KarMegus nodded. The exited Slip-Space in front of Earth, and were able to sneak into the atmosphere and deploy the Phantoms again without being noticed. There was an extra Phantom this time, full of 5 Drinol.

Irk felt strange, as if he had been at the city before. He had found a gate and opened it by walking up to it, like it knew him, they all went it, it was silent, noone there. Infact, the city looked as though it had never been touched. There was a very large expanse of land that lay before the actual city, and it was dotted with small rocks, but mostly, it was as though there had been a plainsland grown in the middle of the desert. As they looked up, they noticed the sky was different than the desert. Instead of the cloudless sky, there were many clouds, everything was so serene. The marines had all become relaxed, and had taken a rest before continuing into the city area. Uldaman however, still appeared cautious. There was something wrong with the city. The road that led in looked new, and shiny, and there were people walking in the streets. Civilians, that now looked at Irk and the squad with puzzled looks on theier faces.
Soon the entire block was staring at them. And then the alarm sounded. Dropships were surrounding them in a matter of seconds. "Put your guns down and you shall be unharmed! Resist and you will be taken by force."
Irk dropped his gun.
