| THE PSYCOLOGICAL DAMAGE A STROKE CAN SOMETIMES BESTOW |
Do you want a more meaningful life? ||(A stroke will sometimes turn us upside down.)
You don't know what that means or how to get it?
If you have answered yes to these questions, you are in an active search for the
meaning of your life. Can you ignore these feelings? Research indicates that the
search for life meaning is one of the most basic of our human drives. So the
answer is that you won't be able to ignore it forever. Life meaning is too basic
to our human make-up.
How can we find time to focus on finding our life meaning in this nuts and bolts
world?
One approach is Practical Spirituality. Some basics of the approach are as
follows:
1. Begin to trust that you have the answers to your own life pattern and
meaning. Ask yourself the question, "What should I do to make my life more
meaningful?" Ask that question in moments of contemplation, prayer,
meditation, or times when you're on "automatic" doing a well-learned task
(showering, stuffing envelopes). Wait for the answer. It may come in symbol
form, a daydream, or an answer popping into your head. Or it may come later
in the form of impulses to do something. Do this exercise on a regular basis.
Learning life's meaning is not a one time question and answer period. It is a
process where we get our answers in bits and pieces as we can use it at that
moment in our lives.
2. Focus on doing something that is greater than just surviving each day. Focus
on service to others, development of your own psychological growth,
investigating things that are fascinating to you, and noticing the positives that
have happened each day. This "higher" focus will teach you more and more
about what is meaningful for you and where the spiritual (as defined by you)
lies in your life. In addition, as you acknowledge your learning as being your
unique contribution to some larger purpose, you transform your whole life into
something highly meaningful, essential and spiritual. Modeling and living your
learning becomes a very powerful life teacher for those around you!
3. Become more mindful of that inner feeling of peace and vibrant living you
get when you feel close to the meaning of life or the spiritual. Some people call
this "centeredness". Whatever you label it, memorize what this sensation feels
like. Then try to keep yourself in this feeling each day as you make your
decisions and live your life.
4. When there is fear, anger, anxiety, or depression, don't run away from the
experience. The more you run from these feelings or try to stop them, the more
intense they become! These negative emotions seem to be a sort of teacher in
our life. They serve as signposts that we have some learning to do. The
learning may be looking at what we believe to be the cause of the negative
feelings - such as who has the control. For example, a negative belief might be,
"I'11 never be able to find a place where I feel loved...I just keep getting the
shaft". This type of limiting belief causes our behavior to remain stuck in the
situation until we make the belief conscious and transform it to a more positive
frame. So an alternative belief might be, "I will automatically find more places
where I feel loved as I learn to love and respect myself more." The message
here is to raise the priority for finding the meaning of your life to one of high
importance -- just as important as earning a living, or solving your immediate
problems. As you find a meaningful life path for yourself, it will increase your
joy of living as well as provide a driving focus for your everyday life!
