NINTENDO 64 preview
Resident Evil Zero
publisher: Capcom
developer: Flagship
projected release date: Spring 2000
Recently announced after months of rumors, Resident Evil Zero is an N64-specific prequel to Capcom's survival-horror series, developed by Yoshiki Okamoto's Flagship group.
The story takes place shortly before the events in the first Resident Evil. You take the role of Rebecca Chambers, the rookie member of the S.T.A.R.S. special police unit, who was seen in the original RE. Not many details about the game are known at this point, but more facts are due in from Japan soon. What is known so far is that characters other than Rebecca will also be playable, that the game begins inside a railroad train, and that the notorious item-box system will be eliminated. Yoshiki Okamoto had commented that this will be the most difficult Resident Evil of the series, and has been quoted as saying, "I wanted to unravel some of the unsolved mysteries, such as the existence of Umbrella, how the Bravo team was wiped out, and a couple of more others that weren't resolved."
You'll also notice a tall man following Rebecca in some of the screenshots. Okamoto has commented that it's most likely he will be sort of a non-player character, rather than a fully playable second character as in Resident Evil and RE 2.
Resident Evil Zero for the Nintendo 64 is coming soon to Japan, but release date, pricing, and US availability are not yet known. I keep you posted.
