The records of departure for the passengers leaving through Hamburg between the years of 1834 and 1945 are stored at the Historical Emigration Office in Hamburg. You "must" provide them with the "exact" year of travel for them to locate the records. You may need to find a census record or other documents to provide them with the actual year of departure.
This is their address:

The Hamburg passenger lists are in the process of being placed online. Link to your Roots und Familienfoschung Click on English on the left hand side of the homepage, and follow the directions given. This is part of what they have to say about the records: 5/31/04
"Which years are in the internet?
Lists for the years 1850 to 1934 have been almost completely preserved in the Hamburg State Archives. At the present time, information for 1890 to 1905 can be accessed through our database. When your ancestors' ship departed before 1890 or after 1905, and when you have a rough idea of when they left, we can undertake a direct search in the emigration lists for you."
The records from Bremen for the years 1907 - 1932 were destroyed by the government because of lack of storage space. The later lists were destroyed during World War II. There were some families that left through Rotterdam. There are only a few records that still exist for Antwerp and Amsterdam. I have a link for some of the Belgium records on our Passenger List page at the Poland Border Surnames website.
The records of departure may provide you with information on your ancestors such as their age, occupation, marital status, number of their children, name of the ship and the date of their departure.
The LDS has filmed the records and indexes from 1850 to 1934. You can find the LDS film numbers at this site on the Internet at this site: Family History Library Catalog. There are some libraries that have filmed records on hand also: Library of Congress, Burton Collection of the Detroit Public Library, and the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. You can check with other public research facilities where you live and at different unversitities that have genealogical collections.
Hope this helps you in your search. |
