Oil & Acne
Steer clear of hot water if you have acne because it will only aggravate the problem. Have warm showers instead or cleanse your face at a basin rather than in the shower. Don't steam your face as it will over-stimulate your skin and accentuate the redness and sensitivity.

Combat Streaky Foundation
To avoid streaky foundation or blush, make sure your skin is well-moisturised before applying. Even oily skins need some moisture (make it an oil-free moisturiser) and normal-to-dry skins can afford to use more to make their skin look dewy.

Care for Dry Skin
If your skin is very dry, reduce your cleansing regime to once a day (night-time). In the morning, just splash water on your face, pat dry and then smooth on some moisturiser.

Moisture Bliss
Shea butter is sourced from the African karite tree and is found in the richest moisturisers. Soothe sunburn, smooth out scaly skin and make your body smell divine by using the creamiest body butters — try Body Shop Nut Body Butter or Stuf Sweet Honey Nut Body Butter.

Pimple Concealer
Pimples are usually oily, shiny, red and sore looking. When you're hiding them you need to find a concealer that's going to camouflage the redness and not slip off the spot. Green-based concealers underneath foundation can hide redness — pick up one from Prestige Cosmetics or the Body Shop.

Zit Cover
When you're trying to hide a zit, skip the blending. Instead, get a cotton bud and dot your concealer or foundation directly onto the spot. When you blend too zealously, the concealer comes right off the spot and collects around the edges, making it more noticeable. Just make sure your concealer or foundation matches your skin tone exactly.

Cream Blush
Don't underestimate the powder of cream blush. Wear it on your cheekbones to liven up your face or on your eyelids to open up your eyes. It's glossy, so it catches the light and gives your face a healthy glow. Try Stila, Aveda, The Body Shop or Clinique.

Mask It
There's a mask for every skin type. Girls with acne-prone skin need a once-a-week mask to help soak up the excess oil, deep-clean pores and lift off the top layer of dead skin cells that could lead to blocked pores and more zits. Girls with oily to normal skin need a mask that's going to soak up oil, clean up and leave skin feeling smooth. Girls with drier skins need something that's going to give their skin a moisture boost.

Shine Secrets
Shine is fine on your eyes and lips but not on your t-zone area. If you've got the greasies, try using oil-absorbing products like Cover Girl Fresh Look Liquid Makeup or Powder, Clean & Clear Oil Control Film or skincare products that are designed to control shine like L'Oréal Plenitude Shine Control or Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions. No-one wants shiny skin in the wrong places and these products are all oil-free, designed to soak up grease and keep shine at bay.

Diet & Acne
Food and acne: No particular food causes acne, but a poor diet will affect your immune system's ability to fight infection and heal. Shellfish, which is high in iodine, might aggravate acne. B group vitamins and zinc are important for healthy skin. Zinc is in food such as wholegrains, fortified cereals, legumes, liver, wheatgerm and yoghurt. B3 is found in poultry, seafood, peanut butter, legumes and wholegrains.

Pimple Control
Zits are triggered by your hormones, so if you're convinced that your skincare regime is under control, your diet and lifestyle are healthy and you're not too stressed, your best bet is to stay calm until your hormones settle down. Use products that help your spots heal quicker and camouflage them in the process. If your acne is severe or cystic, ask your doctor about some other options.

Clean Away Back Pimples
Sick of getting a spotty back? Use the same medicated pimple cleansers that you use on your face on your back. Bonne Bell, Clean & Clear, Phisohex and Clearasil are good because they're affordable, so you don't have to skimp, and they really work. Wear loose tops that let your skin breathe (cotton rather than polyester) and shower after a sweat session.

Beauty Blush
Blush should be worn on and underneath your cheekbones, not on the apples of your cheeks. Choose from cream, powder or gel blush and apply it with your fingertips or a brush (powder only). Blush can be worn on its own, you don't need to be wearing any other make-up products on your face. Liven up your face with Cover Girl Instant Cheekbones, Clinique Blushwear or Caboodles Blusher.

Tutti Fruity
Fruity Tutti is the trend for the season’s range of bath and body products. Brightly packaged suds and body gels are all geared to brighten up your day with citrus and berry scented ingredients. Get set for an invigorating shower with The Body Shop Juice It Shower gels, Mop Cranberry-Kiwi Body Bar and Avon Aromatherapy Foam Bath in Energising Mandarin.

Piercing Precautions
We think body piercings rock, but make sure you get them done professionally at a reputable piercing studio or by a doctor. HIV, Hepatitis C and many other infections can occur if the piercing is done at the wrong place and having a friend do it for you is crazy. Belly, eyebrow, tongue and upper ear piercings still look pretty cool to us.

Milk It
Milk is one of the hottest influences in beauty products to date, both in ingredients and packaging. Real milk is packed with essential vitamins and minerals and if you poured it into your bath (think Cleopatra) or used it on your skin, it would leave it smooth and soft. So it figures that major beauty companies would cotton on — check out Almay Milk Plus skincare, Diesel Plus Plus Feminine Shower Milk and L'Oréal Professional Série Expert (contains no milk but the packaging is cool).

Purple Punk
Purple and lilac have made a huge comeback this season with punk and rock looks being so prominent. Girls with olive skin tones can get away with wearing it on their eyelids and even lips, while fair-skinned chicks should stick to paler versions for their face but spin out on their nails.

Shine-free Foundation
Worried about foundation causing spots? Don't be: certain powders and foundations are designed to control oil and keep your face shine-free. When you're buying, read the labels to make sure that the product is oil-free and non-comedogenic. Try new Cover Girl Fresh Look Oil Free Liquid Make-Up, Maybelline Shine Free Oil-Control Make-Up or Clinique Clarifying Make-up Clear Skin Formula. Wash your fingers before applying so you don't spread zit-causing bacteria.

Colour Crazy
Go crazy! There are no rules to say what colours suit what skin tones. These days there are so many shades of the one colour available that it is possible to find a shade for every skin tone. We can all wear red, violet, yellow, orange and pink on our faces without looking dodgy, you just have to play around and experiment!

Tea-tree Clean
Tea-tree oil is a naturally occurring antiseptic, so if you notice that it's an ingredient in your pimple gel, cleanser and face cream you know they'll be great for combination, oily or acne-prone skin. If you want to zap individual pimples with tea-tree oil make sure it's a low concentrate or dilute it with water.

Shine-free Skin
Keep your skin shine-free this summer by carrying around some oil-blotting papers or use a mattifying lotion on your T-zone area. These products contain ingredients that act like microscopic sponges to soak up excess surface oil. Good ones to try include Clean & Clear, Shiseido, The Body Shop, Clarins and Clinique.

Body hydration
Keep your body soft and hydrated right through summer with a body moisturiser cheap enough that you don't have to skimp when you slather it on. We love Nivea Body Nourishing Lotion or the new St Ives Swiss Formula Body Lotion mists. Smooth or spritz them on straight after showering.

Facial Hair Solutions
Don't get teased about facial hair. Bleach, wax or use a depilatory cream on your upper lip. Bleach is perfect for fair-skinned girls. Darker-skinned babes can opt for pre-waxed plastic strips or depilatory creams.

Feet Treat
Treat your feet after school or sport by soaking them in a bowl of warm water. Add bath salts and a capful of baby oil to leave them soft and smooth. Soak your tootsies for around 10 minutes then dry them off and slather on a rich body cream or foot balm.

Shine-free skin
To keep your face clean and shine-free try a oil blotting tissue - it removes oil but doesn't take off makeup.

Oil free
Using the right stuff: if you have oily skin look for "oil-free" and "non-clogging" on treatment, makeup and sun product labels. Resist the temptation to camouflage blemishes with heavy makeup bases. Stick to oil-free, oil-absorbing foundations. Instead of spot-covering with concealers, which can clog, dab on a product designed to treat the blemish.

Oily skin
Some 40% of the world has oily skin and the shine that goes with it. If you have oily skin avoid oil-based foundations, creamy blushers; greasy sun blocks that make for more shine, clogging and breakout.

Breakouts
Are chocolate and greasy foods to blame for your breakout? Chocolate and other high-fat foods - cheese, ice-cream, nuts, fries - can contribute to increased oiliness. Generally, the lower your fat intake, the better for your skin and health.

Fake tan
Is there such a thing as a "safe" tan? There is no such thing as a safe tan but you can tan smarter by starting with a high SPF level. Or cheat: Get a "tan" with no sun at all by using a self-tanning product.

Sun Protection
What's important for great looking skin? Sun protection is 100 times more important than anything else you can do for skin, doctors say - especially for teens because young skin is even more susceptible to sun damage than older skins. In most cases 80% of sun damage occurs before age 20 (although it shows up later in life).

Clear skin
Ways to keep skin clear and great-looking? Keep hair clean and off your face because oil hair can trigger acne on foreheads. Ditto for hands because they can carry germs. No picking or squeezing - it can lead to infection; apply a product like Clinique's Anti-Blemish Solutions Spot Treatment Gel instead.

Zit Zapper
Zap that zit with the new girl's best friend - Boo Boo Zinger from Caboodles. A handy stick packed with tea tree oil to terminate any blemish. Apply Caboodles concealer over the top to hide the nasties until they disappear!

Cheeky cheeks
Avoid the Red Indian warpaint look by applying blush in the following way: Brush the area of your cheek bone that is in line with your eye's pupil - sweeping outwards along the cheekbone, but stopping in line with the end of your eyebrow.

Skin essentials
What's crucial for teenage skin? A facial soap to remove oil and dirt; an exfoliator to keep excess oil under control and pores unplugged; a moisturizer on dry areas only.

Blackheads
Blackheads are a combination of sebum, dead cells and melanin pigment. For emergency removals try pore strips but to reduce their existence, use skincare products that contain retinoic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Get them from pharmacies.

Sun Alert
Every minute spent outdoors brings sun in touch with skin. Sun exposure, mild or intense, has a cumulative effect that puts your skin at risk - protect skin with a sun block.

Hairy upper lip
Get rid of dodgy upper–lip hair by waxing or using a depilatory cream – both will result in the same re–growth and leave you moustache–free for weeks. Bleach it if you've got fair skin but never try to shave it off.

Skin care basics
The better we look, the better we feel. That's why a skincare programme is important: Cleanse skin thoroughly to leave skin feeling fresh, clean, comfortable; exfoliate to de-flake skin, let moisturizer work better, help keep skin clear; moisturize wherever skin feels dry.

Banish breakouts!
Two weapons to conquer the occasional breakout: Clinique's Anti-Blemish Solutions Spot Treatment Gel and Concealing Cream.

Thirsty Skin
Thirsty skin loves a moisturizer - the correct one for your skin-type. Remember to hydrate from the inside, too: 6-8 glasses of water a day to help skin stay comfortable.
