I got a hold of a group of teens and had a sit-down to get some
genuine views on dating in the 21st century.
JC: What are some cool places to go on a date?
Sarah, 16: The mall. I love the mall.
Brandon, 17: Yeah, I agree, but I don't buy anything in the stores
for her on no first date. She's not on that level yet.
Keisha, 15: I like bowling, too.
Tariq, 17: School games are cool, but I don't want people knowing
my business.
Want to save a little change while you're still feeling each other
out? Go to the mall during the day. A matinee movie is small
change, the food court is reasonable, and you can go into stores to
check out the merchandise.
JC: Fellas, do you still practice old school manners, like
pulling out chairs, opening the door, or letting her order food
first, etc.?
Brandon, 17: Oh yeah, alladat. No problem. I'm a gentleman.
Jessica, 16: No one's done that for me!
Will, 16: Pulling out chairs? Too wimpy. Maybe hold the door.
Maybe!
If you meet the parents, be polite and friendly; they expect a firm
handshake. Make eye contact; be articulate. Her parents are
begging for good manners. "Good evenings" work really well. .First
impressions go a long way! Girls, this goes for you, too.
JC: Who picks out the movie?
Will, 16: I let her pick, that way she gets blamed if it sucks.
JC: What about breath control?
Steven, 16: Oh yeah, gum, Tic Tacs® . . .
Brandon, 17: Tic Tacs for me. Gum has that smackin'. Tic Tacs . . .
you can put them in on the sly.
Keisha, 15: Whatever it is, you can't be having any foul breath!
Jessica, 16: Total turn-off.
JC: What happens when things aren't going right
conversation-wise?
Brandon, 17: I play along and just wait for the date to be over.
If conversation gets boring, be productive by choosing the movie
and asking what kinds of food your date likes, if you're going out to
eat afterwards. Try doing some research on your date; ask your
date's friends about his or her interests. Or just ask your date.
JC: Who pays?
Steven, 17: I offer to go to the movies or dinner. I don't pay for both.
Candice, 17: I go half on everything, so I won't owe him anything.
I've got a job.
Will, 16: (to Candice) Hey, that's cool! Wanna go out?
If you go out to eat, you should know the rules of tipping. It is
commonplace to tip at least 15 percent of the check. For excellent
service, tip 20 percent.
All right, let's do a 15 percent tip for a $20 check. Take 10 percent
of $20.00, which is $2.00. (All you do is move the decimal over one
column to the left.) What about the other 5 percent? Take half of
that 2 bucks and add it up: $2.00 + $1.00 = $3.00 tip.
JC: How does the date end?
Tariq, 17: I get a kiss, forget that!
Lisa, 16: Uh uh! On the first date? Maybe a hug.
Regardless, don't expect or force anything. Go with the flow.
Especially the guys.
Want to be a little more creative than the regular dating scene? Try
these spots:
If a zoo is unavailable, go to a pet store that has puppies,
fish, cats, etc.
A sports event (e.g., hockey, basketball, football)
Museums (yes, museums. Don't knock it 'til you try it.)
Ritzy car dealerships. Just make a stop at one and look at
the coolest cars out on the showroom floor.
Any festival going on in your town.
Go workout at a gym you or your parents have a
membership to. Go out to eat afterwards.
The beach.
Whatever the case, have fun and be yourself. Happy dating! |
