Old Favorites and New Discoveries = The Authors I've Come To Love

NEW! Poetry and Doll Maker with Galleries!     [Learn About Our Ecommerce]
Graphics Gallery!

There are dozens of great authors writing wonderful, interesting books but there are still many authors I've yet to discover. This page will be dedicated mainly to those new-to-me authors I've recently read and enjoyed, plus a few old favorites thrown in for good measure.

Stephanie Bond - new 1/17/02

ALINA ADAMS
I recently picked ANNIE'S WILD RIDE off a bookshelf never realizing that I was starting one of the most engrossing, fascinating books I would read in a long time. Annie and Paul, two graduates of the Air Force Academy, have always had a highly competitive relationship, something that had them constantly striving to stay one step ahead of the other. Their relationship and subsequent marriage are an interesting roller-coaster ride into how what you do or don't say, do or don't do, can be both stimulating and devastating. In these days of "communication is everything" non-communication, as interpreted by our hero and heroine, leads the reader into a funny, sad, ironic, aggravating view of a man and woman's relationship through 14 years of love and hate. If you like relationship-driven stories then ANNIE'S WILD RIDE is for you. It's a keeper for me and I can't wait to get my hands on her next book. You can visit her unique website at .

MARY BALOGH
Heiress to the Heyer legacy. I became a Balogh fan back in 12/87 when I accidentally picked up one of her books and was totally awed by her talent. I proceeded to read 12 of her Regencies in a row and I still couldn't get enough of her. She has a website now, so take a few minutes to visit her and read about her 7/99 release, ONE NIGHT FOR LOVE. Her next release, MORE THAN A MISTRESS, will be out in hard cover in September 2000.

REXANNE BECNEL
Recently read my first Rexanne Becnel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since starting the MedievalReader listserv in September I've been reading more Medieval historicals and had promised myself to read more new-to-me authors who write in this era - THE ROSE OF BLACKSWORD was my first Becnel but won't be my last and ROSE has a spin-off. Medieval lovers, if you haven't tried Becnel give her a try. She doesn't have a website per se but you can view her page at the RT site .

ELIZABETH BEVARLY
Recently read her contemporary, MY MAN PENDLETON, for one of the list chats and was bowled over by her unique sense of humor. I loved this week, glommed her two previous contemporaries (THE WEDDING and THE HONEYMOON) and am lucky enough to have all her Desire titles. Checkout Elizabeth's homepage . Her newest contemporary, HOW TO TRAP A TYCOON, is out now and I can't wait to read it!

SUZANNE BROCKMANN
I can't resist adding Suz to my Authors! page though I'm willing to bet just about every romance reader has visited her website, looking for updates on her latest releases, namely GET LUCKY and, most recently, THE UNSUNG HERO. Here's a link to her website, just in case you haven't visited it . I'm halfway through THE UNSUNG HERO and it's terrific! There's also a listserv for her Team Ten SEALS. To join send a blank e-mail message to TeamTen-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, and here's to the chance that there will be a whole new SEAL series featuring some of the men and women of Team Sixteen, the team featured in TUH.

STEPHANIE BOND
Just finished her OUR HUSBAND. A cross between contemporary romance and women's fiction (with the emphasis on contemporary romance), OUR HUSBAND is Stephanie Bond stretching her talent and coming up a winner. You can visit her website to keep abreast of her current titles by clicking on the purple ball . Have fun!!

LORETTA CHASE
Ah, Loretta Chase, author of one of my Top Five Favorite Historical Romances of all time. She is a low-key, high-style author who writes with an economy of words. There is no superfluous dialogue, no filler descriptions in her books: every word, sentence and paragraph flow with the compactness of the seasoned author. Her LORD OF SCOUNDRELS is a classic and a yearly re-read for me. Click here to visit the Loretta Chase Fanpage. Or you can join the Chase listserv by sending a blank e-mail to lorddain-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

JAMIE DENTON
I recently read THE SEDUCTION OF SYDNEY (HT #748) by Jamie Denton and was very impressed. It's delightful story of a woman once-burned and now shy and the long-time friend who loves her. It's a "Blaze" title and lives up to the emblem. If you haven't read SYDNEY and discovered its charmingly klutzy hero run out and pick it up - I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. You can visit Jamie's page at

KAREN DROGIN/CARLY PHILLIPS
Just when I thought the Zebra Bouquets were going to be a pedestrian series of romances, Karen Drogin's PERFECT PARTNERS was just the injection of sparkle and life I needed to continue on with this newest series. Sharp, clear writing, likeable characters and interesting plot all kept me turning the pages. Yes, there's a baby in this book (a 2 year old) but don't let this turn you off. This is a story of a mutual loss, a mutual love for an orphaned child, and you will cry and rejoice with Chelsie and Griff. Ms. Drogin also writes as Carly Phillips (Harlequin Temptations) and I recommend her as either persona. Visit her great website: Carly Phillips.

DEBORAH HALE
Just finished Deborah Hale's THE ELUSIVE BRIDE, her first Medieval and MY first Deborah Hale. Wow! Loved it! Ms. Hale's other Harlequin Historicals have been Georgian or Regency and this Medieval only reinforces my theory that most Regency fans are also fond of Medievals for some reason. Have to admit that I haven't read Hale's Regencies yet but I'll definitely move them closer to the top of my TBR pile. If you haven't read anything by Deborah Hale - and you enjoy Medievals - get thyself to the nearest bookstore. Visit Deborah at her website or her page at Harlequin.

SABRINA JEFFRIES
You might already know Sabrina Jeffries under her "other name", Deborah Martin, but if you haven't read a Jeffries you must do so. Her "Lord" trilogy is terrific (THE PIRATE LORD, THE FORBIDDEN LORD, tHE DANGEROUS LORD). Her latest release, A DANGEROUS LOVE, is the first in a new trilogy; it was an excellent book, with an unusual hero and setting, but I think Book 2 due out next year will be even better! Visit her website: .

KATHERINE KINGSLEY
I recently read her latest historical, THE SOUND OF SNOW, and then wondered why I hadn't read her before. TSOS was wonderful - blew me away in fact. Read it in a 2-sitting marathon and I'm told this isn't even her *best* book. I shudder to think what kind of reaction I'm going to have when I *do* read her earlier titles. She has written a number of traditional Regencies (Signet) and some historical romances. She also writes at Julia Kay Kendall (contemporaries). If you haven't read anything by Kingsley, I recomment you do so as quickly as possible. Check out my comments on TSOS at and you can visit her website at .

SUSAN MALLERY
One of my favorite T-Ts, COURTNEY'S COWBOY, was written by Susan Macias aka Susan Mallery and as Susan Mallery she wrote one of my all-time favorite Special Editions, THE BODYGUARD AND MS JONES - it was MS JONES that turned me on to Susan Mallery and I think she does humorous romances extremely well. MS JONES is one of the funniest, most heart-warming categories I've read and it has a place of honor on my keeper shelf. Then there's this secondary character in COURTNEY'S COWBOY who deserved a book of his own....well, glom 'em if you can. They're worth the hunt. You can check out both her backlist and upcoming releases at her website.

CONNIE MASON
Connie Mason consistently delivers an entertaining story, perhaps on the light side of historically accurate, but nevertheless the kind of book to curl up with on the deck or at the shore on a warm, summer afternoon. She is one of the grande dames of the historical romance and she can take you to the wild west, Medieval or Georgian England with equal ease. Her website can be reached at .

MARGARET MOORE
Where have I been all the years Ms. Moore has been writing? I read her Harlequin Historical, THE VIKING, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had been many years since I'd read a Viking story and this little title didn't disappoint. THE VIKING has a sequel, THE SAXON, and I'm looking forward to reading it. I've glommed as much of her backlist as I can and she will be an auto-buy for me in the future. Margaret Moore's homepage is at .

DIANE PERSHING
I recently read Diane's 5/99 Intimate Moments (#928) THE TOUGH GUY AND THE TODDLER and was glad I didn't let the title put me off. This is a story about two widowed people - a cop and a socialite - who seem to be complete opposites yet find so much in one another that there is hope they can build a future together. I'd been told to "watch for Diane Pershing's books" and now I know why! I'm going on a major glom of her backlist. This book is a companion book to her first Intimate, WHILE SHE SLEEPS (#863).
You can visit Diane's website by clicking here.

JULIA QUINN
I admit it. I'm not a Julia Quinn fan. Well, I wasn't a Julia Quinn fan until I read THE DUKE AND I for the recent chat on the Regency List. I started the book with an open mind and finished the book panting for more books about the Bridgerton siblings. After trying a good number of Quinn's earlier titles and found them too light and with too much of a contemporary feel to them, I was much impressed with the maturity of her writing in THE DUKE AND I, the humor less annoying and more subtle and appealing. If you visit her website you can get a glimpse of which Bridgerton will next fall in love. It's someone who's bossy and interfering and needs to be brought to his knees. Oops, almost gave it away!

SHEILA RABE
Used-to-be Regency author Sheila Rabe has now found her niche in the contemporary genre. I recently read her ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS and fell in love with the characters and the town, the whole concept of the story. I've read a lot of Christmas books, mostly categories, but this book shot right to the top of my keeper shelf, and I can't wait for the 2/01 release of her Valentine book. You can visit her website at Sheila's Place.

JACLYN REDING
Another new-to-me author, now an auto-buy. I read her Regency-set historical, WHITE HEATHER, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's Book 1 in a trilogy and Book 3 won't be out until 2000 - such a long wait, but luckily I still have some of her backlist to read (like her Restoration novels). If you haven't read Jaclyn Reding yet, do give her a try. I think you'll like her - a lot! Her website can be reached at .

DEBORAH SIMMONS
Ever since I read her first book (HEART'S MASQUERADE, Avon 1989) last year I've been a fan. I read her first Harlequin Historical, FORTUNE HUNTER, last fall and was completely hooked. She is a perennial favorite with romance list members and her deBurgh series is an ongoing mention when Medieval historicals are mention. Apparently there's something about those deBurgh brothers that capture the hearts and imaginations of 20th century readers. Suzie Choi has set up a fan page for Deborah Simmons - check it out here.

ROSEMARY STEVENS
As an avid Regency fan, just about every Regency romance ever written has found its way into my collection - including those written by Rosemary Stevens. The flip side to all this is that I'd not read any of her books until just this summer when I splurged and purchased her latest, DEATH ON A SILVER TRAY, a pre-Regency mystery in which Beau Brummell is the sleuth. It's difficult to compare a historical mystery to a Regency romance but it's my guess that Stevens' smooth writing style was honed on her Regencies and that they're going to be just as enjoyable as DEATH. This is a smooth-reading, elegant little novel - perfect for curling up with on a lazy Sunday afternoon. To read more about Beau Brummell (and Rosemary) you can visit her site.

ELIZABETH THORNTON
I'd read, loved and kept some of Thornton's traditional Regencies but had never tried her historicals until STRANGERS AT DAWN (11/99 release). Fantastic book, very likeable heroine and hero, unique plot. Loved it! And went on a major glom of her historical backlist. Still have one of her books to find. You can visit her website here
. Try her if you haven't yet - I highly recommend her.

SUSAN WIGGS
There isn't enough I can say about THE YOU I USED TO KNOW by Susan Wiggs. I have a feeling it will be my favorite contemporary of 2001. Though I'd collected a few Wiggs books through the years, this was the first of hers I'd read. Click here to reach her website.

JOAN WOLF
I've read a few of Joan Wolf's early Signet Regencies but none of her historical romances but after a discussion of her books on one of the lists last year I hunted her historical backlist. I finished THE GAMBLE recently and couldn't put it down! I read it in one day and hated to see it come to an end and now I'm going to concentrate on reading through her historicals during the summer. Meet Joan at her virtual home by clicking here.
