Rats like any other small and active pet need lots of things to play with. Giving your Rats toys is a great way to cure this. And please remember, they Do like toys, but they also view us as not only their supplier of food but something to play with. To be short, we are also a toy to them. Also, nothing will replace the fun and love toys and people bring, but they also like other Rats to be around to play with. rats are VERY social.
You can buy toys from petstores and usually super-markets, but that costs a LOT to do because Rats do chew on everything and WILL eventually destroy the toys you buy. This is why using toilet paper rolls after the t.p. is gone is a good idea for small rats. You can also use PVC pipes and paper towel rolls.
Bigger Rats need bigger things to climb in. PVC pipes are good, small gift boxes with ROUND holes cut in them, tissue paper boxes, are all good for Bigger Rats and small rats.
Your Rat will more than likely toss the pipes, rolls, and boxes around its cage to find new and exciting ways to play in them and get in and out of them. They will also sleep in them, knaw on them, piddle on them, and eat on and in them, so replace the cardboard and paper toys every time you clean their cage. With the PVC pipe, just clean it.
If you choose to buy your toys for your Rats, i suggest wooden blocks with holes all over and in them. Your Rat will as well urinate on them and knaw on them, so when it comes time to clean your tank or cage, just run them under warm water for a few minutes and let them dry before placing back in your Rat's cage.
Large wheels are also fun for Rats and good for exersize, but be aware your Rat might accidently get its tail or foot trapped in the wheel. Your Rat could be hurt badly.
Those wheels you put a Rat in and put on the floor so they can race around your house are good for smaller Rats. Big Rats will simply feel crouded and will either do nothing, try to eat its way out, use it for a good place to piddle, or simply fall asleep in it.
THICK ropes are good to hang from the top of your rat's cage or tank. You will be supprized at how good of climbers they are!
Basicly anything that will not shard or split will make for good toys for your Rats! Have fun experimenting! And remember, Rats all act different from eachother, so you might get REALLY good results from toys with some Rats and not so good results with other Rats. |
