Cleaning your Rat's Cage or Tank

Cleaning your Rat's cages and/or Tanks is a nessesaty. It SHOULD be done every other day for best results, but needs to be done at least once every week to once every two weeks, depending on the size of the tank. Needless to say, sense I work, my Rat's cages are cleaned once a week.
NEVER use a soft wood. Some people i have talked to told me they use sand and things like that. They got to see just how angry i can get. Although sand MIGHT act like kitty-litter, it is toxic AND hard to keep clean AND expensive. Sand is something you can use in a fish tank. (I have a lot of fish).
-Aspen-
I personally use aspen and paper shreddings mixed together, and I put paper shreddings in the corners over the aspen. Aspen is very dusty, so if you decide to use it, when you put it in the tank or cage push it down to its packed tight, and let it sit for about a half hour to an hour before putting your furry little friends back in their cage or tank.

-Paper Shreddings-
Paper shreddings should in NO WAY replace normal bedding for your Rats. It does not soak up urine and droppings well. Paper shreddings are mainly for play. Your Rats will chew on generally anything, and most that I have seen just LOVE to chew, toss, nest, and sleep in their paper shreddings. This is why i put them in the corners and mix it with their bedding. My Rats just LOVE to tunnel around in their bedding, so that also provides support for the tunnels so they don't colapse on the Rats.
-Newspaper Bedding-
The word "Newspaper" should say enough right there. Although it is easy to replace every day, the dye on the paper is not very good for your Rat. If you plan on using Newspaper, use it as a lining and put a good 2 inches of bedding over it. The only good I can see in using newspaper is that when you clean their tanks, if you use it as a bottom lining it is probably easier to get the dirty bedding out of the cage or tank.

-Kitty-Litter-
DON'T USE IT! Its toxic to Rats. You may use it with Cats and other animals that are house broken, but they don't have to live in it, and your Rat will.
