Can talents or exceptional abilities be cultivated from children with very average potentials?

Some of the most widespread beliefs about exceptional people revolve around the view that certain individuals are not only remarkable but inherently so, while the remainder of us are doomed to ordinariness. But there is firm evidence that even the most extraordinary human abilities do not justify our assuming that any person who displays them must have been born exceptional.

It is true that human genius cannot be readily explained. The causes are not at all simple or straightforward, and the production of impressive abilities cannot be reduced to any easy formula that can be widely applied. But much is known about the circumstances that give rise to the most impressive abilities: although the causes are complicated and incompletely understood they are very far from being totally obscure. In practical terms, this means that even though we cannot construct an educational production-line that will reliably manufacture geniuses, it is well within our power to take steps that will greatly increase the likelihood of any child becoming a young person who is by current standards unusually competent in one or more valued areas of expertise. With a SMALL amount of help and guidance, the MAJORITY of ordinary parents are capable of doing a great deal to help make that possible. Emphasis should be made to train teachers at kindergarten and elementary levels and also encourage communication with their students' parents (e.g. teacher-parent associations) on ways to enhance intellectual development.
