Patchwork Steps
Equipment Needed:
Templates for making the shapes for the patches. When you cut out the fabric, leave a 1/8" seam allowance around the edge of the template.
Stiff paper shapes to be tacked into pieces of fabric to hold patches firm.
Sharp scissors to cut out fabric shapes. Use old scissors to cut out paper shapes.
A fine needle for stitching patches together.
Fine cotton for sewing patches together.
Fine steel pins to avoid leaving holes in the fabric.
Any odd scraps of fabric of the same weight. Make sure fabrics are colour fast.
Make Patches:
Using the template, cut out the paper shapes. Using the template, cut out the patches, leaving seam allowance around each patch. Pin paper shape on the wrong side of fabric and fold over seam allowance. Tack around patch.
Join Patches:
Put right sides of two patches together, and over-sew with tiny stitches along one edge.
Finish Off:
When all patches are sewn together, press patchwork on wrong side. Take out all paper shapes. Mount patchwork on the main article. Slip-stitch in place, all round. Remove edge tacking. |
