As I slowly ride my bike down the street,
I hear what sounds like a drum start to beat.
I hear continuous and monstrous claps,
leaving no trace of any silent gaps.
I start to ride faster when I hear pitter-patters,
and the big booms make the house shutters clatter.
I must ride fast if I want to survive,
for now I see that lightning's arrived.
I see it flash as thunder grows loud.
It booms and roars from the black eerie cloud.
I hear a snap, and down falls a tree;
Bam! It's landed on top of me.
A sizzle sounds, and then a pop.
Power lines crash, but wait a sec, stop!
To me this can't be happening,
I'm only a child, I'm only fourteen.
I can hear my own heart slowing its thump.
This is the last time I will feel it pump.
Everything else- the thunder, the claps,
the pitter-patters, the booms, and even the snaps,
have become immune to both my ears.
Silently I thank God for these past fourteen years.
