Asia Venili jumped up and sprung backwards off of her feet. She concentrated on keeping her legs straight and her toes pointed as her hands hit the ground and she pushed-off with all her might. In a snap she was right side up again and her feet were safely standing on the ground.
"Mmm-ah!" her French coach, Jaques Pierre, said as he put all his fingers on his left hand in a bundle and raised them to his lips and released them as he made a smacking sound. "Needs more. Try again." He wore a small beret and had a little go-tee on his chin. He looked somewhat like a painter, but probably couldn't draw a picture with a sky and clouds on top, and grass on the bottom if his life depended on it.
Fourteen year old Asia moaned as she repositioned herself for yet another back handspring.
Jaques grimaced as he watched her.
Asia thought she had done her best of the day, but Jaques Pierre, the "Great Perfectionist" said, "Poo-poo, Asia Venili, shape-up or ship-out. It's your choice." He talked
with a roll of his R's.
Asia was the best gymnast in the "Bouncing Kangaroos" gymnastics group. There's only one thing wrong with that. The "Bouncing Kangaroos" are made mostly of 3rd and 4th
graders, and Asia was in 9th grade. She was no match for the other girls here age, who were in much higher groups than the "Bouncing Kangaroos."
"Miss Asia," Jaques began, "you are a failure of your own species. Go home!" His voice went sort-of out of control when he said "go home"-probably because he was frustrated. He got frustrated often. Especially at the "Bouncing Kangaroos."
Asia trudged across the blue mats that were spread across the floor. She decided she would not go home, but watch the lessons of the group who practiced next. They were
the highest group of skill, and Asia's younger sister belonged to the group.
Members of the "All Stars" had been waiting patiently while Asia practiced and were now filing out onto the mats to begin warming-up.
Jaques was very uncaring and thoughtless, therefore, he thought that warming-up was a waste of time and had the girls do it on their own time before practice began. He was
performing dangerous actions and most of the girls absolutely despised him and thought that he should be fired. Everyone, that is, except for a girl named Melanie. She was infatuated with Jaques Pierre and often unsuccessfully attempted to beat the other girls up when theytalked behind his back.
Asia's thirteen year old sister, Madison, was straddled and sitting next to Melanie.
Melanie leaned toward Madison and exasperated in a whispered tone, "Isn't he a dream boat?”
Madison put an overwrought look on her face and backed away. "Yuck-a-licious! Isn't he like 40 years old? You have to be crazy. Out of your mind!"
"Madison," Melanie sighed, "don't you understand? Don't you see the chemistry between us?"
Melanie was probably expecting Madison to answer with a 'yes,' but she shook her head and in a dull voice said, "No, I see nothing at all. Jaques is a freak, and so are you."
Melanie snickered. "Forget you. You're just a child. I'm seventeen years old, and you're thirteen. Why am I wasting my time talking to you and your childish thoughts?"
Madison quietly mumbled to herself, "Good, next year you'll be gone."
"What was that?" Melanie asked.
"Um-I-ah," Madison hesitated, "I-well-just-ah said that ah, 'Would you please mow my lawn?'"
"Yeah," Melanie said, "like, I'm so sure." Then, she got up and left.
Madison moseyed on over to some girls in ninth grade. Madison was the buffoon of the group and always kept them laughing, even though she was only a seventh grader.
Jaques broke up all of the conversation and giggling by clapping two times and saying, "We shall begin my little lassies!"
"Whatever you say, Jack," Melanie said enchantedly. "May I call you Jack?"
Jaques’s eyes opened more broadly. "You may certainly not! That is quite enough. Never call me Jack again. May name is not Jack, it is Jaques!"
Madison snickered. "Yeah," she began sarcastically, "I see chemistry all right."
Everyone started to laugh.
Jaques clapped his hands. "Order, order!" he chanted again and again until everyone was silent.
The girls split into groups and went their own ways. Madison went to the vault and stood first in line. She was always eager to learn new things. She had received a reward for being the "Most Fun" her first and third years in gymnastics. She was now in the middle of her fourth year.
Asia was perching on a bench against a wall feeling deep pity for herself. She watched as her younger sister sprung onto the vault and did a flip off of it with expertise.
Asia was so jealous. Oh, how jealous she was. She wished she had never joined gymnastics so she could not be humiliated by her younger sister. Her thoughts were interrupted when a
man standing next to her said, "Excuse me, but could you tell me the name of the girl who's on the vault with the long blonde hair?"
Asia's head was buried in her arms so she could not see who the man was yet. She lifted her head and the man grabbed the wall and looked mesmerized. "Whoa,"
he said in amazement, "are you by any chance a gymnast?"
Asia was confused. She had no idea what this strange guy was talking about. "Well," she hesitated, "I am in gymnastics."
The man smiled. "Show me ahh... um ah- how about a back handspring?"
Asia got up and attempted to do her best back handspring ever. She thought it was good, but the man obviously didn't agree with her.
"I'll get back to you," he said. "Now, who's the girl on the vault with the long blonde hair?"
Asia looked. "Oh," she said in distress, "that's my sister. Her name is Madison Venili."
"Thanks, Kid," the man said. Then, he trotted off towards Madison's direction.
Asia softly began to cry. "I am a dud," she complained as she buried her head in her arms again. "Jaques has been right all along."

* * * * * *

"Guess what?" Madison screamed as she flung open the front door to her house.
"What?" her mother, Marty, asked. "I give up. Tell me."
"An agent wants me to go to some entertainment hotel and perform gymnastic’s routines with the pros. The real pros!" Madison informed in excitement.
Asia came in the door behind Madison. "Yee-haw," she murmured sarcastically. "I can hardly suppress my excitement."
"Oh, quit acting like you've got a stick up your butt, Asia," Madison argued. "Anyhow," she continued, "he wants the whole family to take tonight's 5:00 flight to Miami!"
Marty stood with her mouth hanging open. "Pack. Everyone pack, now."
