Hereford United Football Club was formed by the amalgamation of two local clubs, St Martins and RAOC in June 1924. The newly formed Hereford United played its first competitive fixture on 30th August 1924 when they played Atherstone Town in the Birmingham Combination League, losing 2 - 3. The following week saw the club play it's very first FA Cup match, when they played neighbours Kidderminster Harriers. The result again did not go in United's favour when they lost 2 - 7.

1939 saw the club become a limited company and thus gave the club its official title of Hereford United Football Club (1939) Limited. The same year also saw the club enter the premier non-league competition, The Southern League.

After many years as being regarded as one of the country's best supported and most successful non-league clubs, the 1971/72 season will go down as one of the years to remember in the clubs history. After drawing 2-2 with first division Newcastle United as St James Park in the FA Cup 3rd round, the teams met at Edgar Street in the much postponed replay. After taking a late lead through Malcolm McDonald, Newcastle looked destined to be going into the fourth round, but minutes later Ronny Radford scored his famous 30 yard goal (see video's section) to gain extra time. During extra time, substitute Ricky George scored Uniteds second and thus gave them a 2 - 1 victory. This victory meant United became the first non-league club to register a victory over a 1st division side since 1949. The fourth round again saw United draw first division opposition, this time West Ham United were the opponents. After drawing 0 - 0 in front of a capacity Edgar Street crowd, United finally bowed out of the cup loosing 3-1 to the Hammers. with World Cup hero scoring a hat trick for the hammers.

The season ended on a high note on June 2nd 1972 when United were elected to the Football League. Barrow, who in the previous season had been relegated from division 3, had tied with United with both clubs recording 26 votes each. In the second ballot Barrow recorded 20 votes, but this time United recorded 29 votes and thus election to the Football League.

In their first year of being a Football League club, United gained promotion and again in 1976 when they were promoted to the Second Division. Relegation followed and in 1978 United soon found themselves back in the old Fourth Division and on a number of occasions they had to re-apply for re-election, as they not only struggled on the field but off it as well.

The 1984/1985 season saw the club just miss out on promotion as they finished 5th in Division Four and this, along with wins in the FA Cup, Littlewoods Cup and Freight Rover Trophy was the only respite for supporters who were hungry for success. This success came in the shape of the Albright Bitter Welsh Cup in 1990, when they met Wrexham in the final. which was staged at Ninnian Park. Colin Robinson gave United a 34th minute led after Darren Peacock connected onto a Gary Bower free lick and he knocked it down for Robinson to score. Wrexham levelled the scores in the 55th minute through Gary Worthington. Ian Benbow restored the lead and despite Gary Bowyer hitting a post in injury time, United won 2-1.

Promotion nearly came around during the 1995/1996 season when they just missed out on reaching the Division 3 play-off final. In February 1996 the team were languishing in 19th position, but an upturn in form saw the team rise up the table and at the end of the season they finished in the play-off zone. Darlington were to be the opponents and United had home advantage in the first leg of the semi-finals. Dean Smith gave United an early lead but Darlington hit back and scored twice to make the final score 1-2. The second leg at Feethams saw United loose 2-1 again and thus go out of the play-offs.

The 95/96 season was a season to remember for all the good reasons as United not only had success in the league but they also had success in the cup. They reached the Third Round of the FA Cup for the second time in five years and they had been drawn at home to Premiership outfit Tottenham Hotspur. In front of a capacity gate of 8,800, United soon found themselves 0 - 1 down due to a Ronny Rosenthal goal. In the second half though Dean Smith was given the golden opportunity to make the scores level when United were awarded a penalty in front of the Meadow End. Smith sent his penalty straight over the bar much to the horror of the home fans. This agony was soon forgotten minutes later when John Brough rose at the near post to head in from a corner and give United a 1 - 1 draw. The replay at White Heart Lane saw United bow out of the competition, loosing 5 - 1 on the night, although Gareth Stoker scored a spectacular long range consolation goal.

The following season was a season to remember for all the wrong reasons.United had struggled throughout the season and in the final few weeks they started to stare relegation in the face. In the penultimate league fixture of the season United travelled to Leyton Orient knowing that should they win their destiny would be in their own hands. A disputed off side goal sent Orient on their way to a 2 - 1 victory and with Brighton winning over Doncaster Rovers the relegation issue would be decided at Edgar Street the following week, when United met Brighton in the last game of the season. A win would guarantee United safety but a draw would mean that they would go down, as although United had a superior goal difference, Brighton had scored just a couple more goals. Kerry Mayo scored an own goal and gave United the lead, but Robbie Reinelt equalised and with the game ending 1 - 1 United were condemned to relegation. This ended Uniteds 25 years in the Football League.

United's first season in the Conference saw them finish in a creditable 6th position and play Tranmere Rovers at home in the third round of the FA Cup, losing 0-3 on the night. to get this position they had met Brighton & Hove Albion in a repeat of last season's infamous league tie and second Division Colchester United. United has won 2-1 again Brighton with Neil Grayson scoring twice and against Colchester they won 4-3 on penalties after the replay at Edgar Street ended 0-0, (the original tie had ended 1-1).

The last two seasons were of disappointment from a league point of view as United failed to gain promotion and finished mid way in the table and 8th respectively. On the FA Cup front the 99/2000 season was a great success, United defeated both Hartlepool United and York City at home before taking on Premiership side Leicester City, also at Edgar Street. Leicester held on for a 0-0 draw just, Paul Parry hit the post with minutes to go.
The return leg at Filbert Street saw United take the game to the Premiership outfit and go in front with a header from ex-striker Paul Fewings, a disputed linesman's decision kept Leicester in the tie when Matt Elliot scored for the Foxes he looked to be in an offside position.
A goal in extra-time saw Issit score for Leicester and prevent the tie going to penalties.
