The move to Highbury was initiated by Arsene Wenger after the Gunners boss was reportedly impressed by Ljungberg's performance in the Swedish team that beat England in Stockholm in a qualifying match for Euro 2000. And Ljungberg did not disappoint. His first ever goal for Arsenal came in his debut in a Premier League match played at Highbury against Manchester Utd. However, lack of opportunities in the Arsenal first team saw Ljungberg having a rather quiet and low profile first season at Arsenal.
