Poland's Provinces before 1999
Click here to Vote & Return to PBS Homepage
polskie województwa

In the left hand column on this page, are all the provinces of Poland that existed from 1975 through December 31, 1998 of the towns that have churches, temples, shrines and synagogues located in them today. If you know where your ancestors lived, go to the bottom of this page and use the search box by typing in the name of the village, town or city you wish to find. If there is a religious establishment in it, you will get a page with it listed. If you do not find one, you will need to find a town close to it. I suggest using the Shtetlseeker to find the parish for your ancestral village. With the Shtetlseeker, you can type in the village, and than search the listed places with churches to find the closest parish to it. This site is not foolproof, but it will get you close to the parish you want. Right now there is a lot of new construction going on in Poland. There are new churches popping up in many places as the population shifts. If there is a new parish for your village, the old one should tell you where the records were sent, if they no longer have them.

PLEASE NOTE: When I first set up this site, it was setup with the 49 provinces which existed from 1975 to the end of 1998. On January 1, 1999, the number of provinces was decreased to 16. I am in the process of showing where the parishes are located in the new division of the provinces. Some of the provinces in their entirety became part of another province. Some were split into more than one of the new provinces.

On the following pages you will find some of the pages will state at the top in which the old provinces are now located. Others will show the new province behind the name of the parish. I listed the parishes by the old province names because most of our ancestors left Poland from the late 1800's to about the time of WWI. Most of our grandparents and great grandparents were still corresponding with family members in Poland. Many of us know the names of the provinces between 1975 and 1998, by the addresses our families in Poland used, when writing to our grandparents and great grandparents.

When using the province listings, you will find these abbreviations :

k. means near the city of . . .

n. means near the river of . . .

na means on the river of . . .

Once you know the town where they may have attended their religious services , so to the link below in the next paragraph and follow the directions very carefully. You may wish to copy them first so you don't lose track of the steps to get to the page needed to locate the address.

Now you can find the address of the church in this manner:

Go to the site GenPol.

Click on Czytelnia, which is located in the table of context on the left side of the page.

Click on Katalog zasobow metrykalnych from the dropbox.

Type in the name of the village, town or city where the village
is located. If you have a larger city, it will list all of the
parishes by name. Do not list the name of the church. List the
place where it is located. This website is in Polish. I do not
think there is an English version ... sorry, when in Poland, do
as the Poles do, read Polish. :)
