Mike Tenay
Growing up in southern California, Mike started reading and studying the business end of wrestling at the young age of seven years old. He would go to the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles to see his heroes: Fred Blassie, John Tolos, and The Destroyer, the man who's in ring persona hooked Mike as a fan for life. Ironically, Tenay and Beyer would become great friends over the years, which they still remain to this day.
By age 11, Mike had his first story published and went on to start up his own wrestling newsletter, one of the groundbreakers for those so popular today. After distributing his news for seven years, Tenay stopped his publication and took a step back from the wrestling scene.
Throughout the years, Mike worked selling heating and air conditioning before taking a job as the manager for the race and sports book at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino. This job led to an appearance on the National Sports Talk Show, where the subject of wrestling came up, and Mike gave his insight. By the end of the show, Tenay had himself a weekly wrestling radio show, called Wrestling Insiders. It ran for a six-year period from 1991 to 1997.
In 1993, Mike was offered a spot on the WCW Hotline, which he accepted and is still actively doing today. But the turning point in Mike's broadcasting career came in 1994, when along with Chris Cruise, he announced the WCW/AAA promoted When World's Collide PPV. Because of Tenay's vast knowledge of the Lucha Libre style, he was the perfect choice for this project.
This exposure, combined with an appearance by Eric Bischoff on the radio show, led to Mike joining the WCW broadcasting team. At first, he just added to the international matches, but in September 1996, became a full time, weekly announcer on Monday Nitro.
Today, Mike virtually does it all: the WCW Hotline on Mondays, a column in the WCW Magazine, producing video packages for various WCW television shows, and of course co-hosting WCW Thunder, with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
Traveling is a big part of Mike's schedule, easily logging over 150,000 miles in one year. When he does have time at home, he spends it with his loving wife, Karen. He also looks forward to visiting his son Eric and granddaughter Kayla in Las Vegas whenever the opportunity arises. Tenay is also an avid sports fan, siting hockey as his favorite, and will take in a game when his schedule permits.
Tony Schiavone, after calling Mike "a walking encyclopedia," dubbed him The Professor, a name that has stuck throughout his tenure in WCW. If you know Mike, or have even talked to him briefly about wrestling, you know this to be nothing but the truth.
