Mean Gene Okerlund
Meeeeeeeean Gene! Anyone that knows the world of pro wrestling knows his name. It has been synonymous with the sport for twenty years, since Gene started his career in the now defunct American Wrestling Association. It was there where Minnesota governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura gave Okerlund the nickname that would follow him throughout the rest of his profession.
Within a few years in the business, Gene made his way to the northeast, where he became the popular figure that he remains to this day. Although he was purely an announcer, believe it or not, Mean Gene actually wrestled one professional wrestling match, teaming with The Hulkster against Mr. Fuji and George "The Animal" Steele. Gene scored the pinfall, and quickly retired the tights and returned to the craft he had mastered.
Mean Gene Okerlund has compiled a treasury of experiences and escapades in a 25-year journey in wrestling promotions from Minneapolis to New York to Atlanta. Each week, Mean Gene comes into millions of living rooms nationwide on WCW Monday Nitro on TNT and WCW Thunder on TBS Superstation, as well as major Pay-Per-View events.
The man with the microphone brings credibility to a sports entertainment business that builds a wildly popular drama around a wrestling ring. Directing the interviews for both flamboyant veterans and tongue-tied rookies, Okerlund makes everyone look good. His crisp questions, well-timed wit and priceless facial expressions drive the point of every message. Okerlund's fervent pitches for products, programming and pay-per-views could make Eskimos buy WCW ice cubes. He is a master.
Prior to starting his announcing career, Okerlund owned his own advertising agency in his native home of Minneapolis. He now puts that marketing zeal to work with his own chain of restaurants, Mean Gene's Burgers. There are 45 restaurants nationwide with 13 locations in California.
Mean Gene Okerlund resides in Sarasota, Florida, where he enjoys golf in his spare time. He is the father of two children, one of whom was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Hockey team and also played for the New York Islanders organization.
He's a great announcer, personality and pitchman. He's Meeeaan Gene!
