At times you can find people with the same surnames you're researching. A good way to tear down that brickwall is to contact people with the same name. Sometimes they may be cousins of yours, and may give you new clues on other angles of research. Every avenue of pursuit is worth a try. Since Poland has very strict privacy laws, you will not find telephone directories such as other countries may have. There are email directories where the residents of Poland do list their addresses in the list below.

The Polish Genealogical Society of the Northeast noted in its "Pathways and Passages" publication that they have an extensive collection of Polish phonebooks. They will do a search for a fee. Polish phonebooks are structured differently from US directories. Each directory covers a province (wojewodstwo). The listings for the provincial capitol come first, followed by an individual alphabetical list of every village in the province. If you want to find all the Kowalczyks in the Province of Bialystok, they have to check the several hundred villages in the province individually for the name you are interested in. The undertaking is time consuming." They charge $10/hour fee. In most cases it takes anywhere from one to two hours to completely search a directory. For an abbreviated search; i.e. one village and one provincial capital the fee is $1 per surname.
