DISCOVERING YOUR POLISH ROOTS
by Rosemary Chorzempa
There is a wealth of information such as where to correspond for certain records, where to write for those records, the diocese and archdiocese for different areas of the country. And there is a sample letter where you just fill in your information. There is also a small dictionary, list of names of the months and days of the week both in Polish and I think Ukrainian. It also tells how to decipher Baptismal, Marriage and
Death records that were written in Latin or Polish. I highly recommend it for
anyone doing Polish genealogy.

If anyone has an interest in the history of Poland in 1775 to 1800, I highly recommend this book. It is a novel based on the true story from the diary of a l7-year-old Polish girl about the turmoil in Poland at that time and her survival during the war. It centers around Warsaw, Krakow, Halicz and Opole along with other locations that are mentioned.
The Nation in the Village: The Genesis of Peasant National Identity in Austrian Poland 1848-1914
Keely Stauter-Halsted
Recommended by J. Laska
This book gives all sorts of fascinating details about the daily lives, beliefs, values, and self-identity of peasants from the Galician section of Poland from the time
the Emperor of Austria granted them their freedom from serfdom and the right to land ownership (1848) up to the beginning of WWI (1914). The authors focus is on how the peasants who used to identify themselves in terms of the Landed Gentry they worked for, evolved into free people who saw themselves as members of a village and citizens of Poland (a national identity if you will).
