Right before the game starts, you'll set the internal clock. You should set it to what time it is in the real world. You'll start out in your room again. Go downstairs and talk to your mom. She'll give you your Pokegear. Then go to the local professor's lab, his name is Professor Elm. After he finishes lecturing you, you get to choose one of three Pokemon on the table. On the left is Chikorita, a grass Pokemon, the one in the middle is Cyndaquil, a fire Pokemon. And the one on the right is Totodile, a water Pokemon. Once you choose, leave New Bark Town and start looking for Pokemon.

Once you leave New Bark Town, you'll soon find Violet City. Just take Route 29 West. There's not much there, but talk to the guy right at the entrance of the city. He will show you around the town and give you a map card for your Pokegear. After that, go up through the northern exit and take either path north, they both lead to Mr. Pokemon. He and his assistant will talk, and give you an egg. You can probably guess what happens to the egg. Then he'll give you a new Pokedex. After that when you leave the house, Prof. Elm will call you and tell you to come back to New Bark Town, and that's there's been an emergency.

When you get back to New Bark Town, go straight to Prof. Elm. The big emergency is one of Prof. Elm's Pokemon was stolen. You'll face the person who stole the Pokemon, you'll name her, and then if you beat her, you'll get the Pokemon back. Give it back to Elm, and he'll thank you. When you're leaving, talk to the scientist at the bottom of the lab and he'll give you five Pokeballs. Once you leave the city, a man will want to show you how to use Pokeballs. Sound familiar?

Violet City hosts the first gym in the game. The trainer running the gyms' name is Falkner. He has two Pokemon, a Pidgey at level 7, and a Pidgeotto at level 9. Beat him to get TM31, 900 Yen and the Wing Badge. It allows you to use FLASH at anytime. Now, go to the north side of the city and enter the tower, Sprout Tower. You'll find several monks, who have Bellsprouts and sometimes a Hoot Hoot. Then at the top your rival defeats a monk and runs off. Defeat the monk and he'll give you HM05, FLASH. The monk has two level 7 Bellsprouts, and one level 10 Hoot Hoot.

After you have defeated the main monk and Falkner, go to the Violet City PokeCenter. But most importantly, you must only have 5 Pokemon in your backpack at the time. Then, talk to the scientist in the PokeCenter and he will give you an egg. After a certain amount of steps, the egg will hatch into Togepi. Then, after the egg hatches, go to the southeastern part of the town and down a walkway, the guard will let you through. If Togepi has not hatched, he won't let you through.

Go west and enter The Ruins of Alph. When you first go inside, you'll have to put together a puzzle. When you put the puzzle together, it will look like Kabuto. There are different shapes, and you have to put them all together. They are Ho-Oh, Aerodactyl and Omanyte. Anyway, after you put together the Kabuto puzzle, you will fall through the floor and into the cave full of Unown. An Unown is a Pokemon, and it comes in many different shapes. But the Pokedex reads each Unown as an Unown, no different. But, you can get an Unowndex. You get that by putting together the other three puzzles of the Pokemon, and going out of the cave and talking to the man. He will upgrade your Pokedex to include an Unowndex. Go out the other end of the cave to get to Route 32.

Once you exit, you'll find a much needed PokeCenter. Heal your Pokemon and talk to the Fishing Guru, he'll give you the Old Fishing Rod. Then go into the cave below the Center. Then head through the tunnel to the end.

Once you leave the tunnel, you'll see a well being guarded by, you guessed it, Team Rocket. They have captured all the Slowpokes in Azalea Town. They are blocking the well and the Hiwanda City Gym. First, talk to the man inside the house above the gym. He'll move the Team Rocket member guarding the well. Now go into the well. Then you have to beat the Team Rocket member guarding the gym. (There might be another one in the town somewhere.) Then the gym will open. The gym leaders name is Bugsy. She has a Level 14 Metapod and Kakuna, and a Level 16 Scyther. When you beat her, you'll get 960 Yen, TM49, and the Hive Badge, which makes all Pokemon up to Level 30 obey you. Now go inside the well and defeat the Rockets. Then Kurt will take you to his house. He will give you a Lure Ball, which catches Pokemon attached to Rods while fishing. And if you bring him apricots, the things found in the plants across the Johto region, he'll make you different balls to do different things. Now go to the PokeCenter, because as you leave Azalea Town, you'll meet your Rival once again. He has a Level 12 Gastly, a Level 14 Zubat, and the Pokemon he got at the beginning, which will be evolved and at Level 16. Head left to Ilex Forest.

Ilex Forest has two machines, HM01 and TM02. To get HM01, walk into the forest and soon you'll see a man next to a cut-able bush. Go past him until you find a Farfetch'd in plain sight. Chase it until you get back to that man. Talk to him and he'll give you CUT, HM01. A new feature in Gold/Silver allows you to press A while in front of a cut-able bush, which will cut down the bush. This only works when you have a Pokemon with CUT in your lineup. Further in the forest, you'll find another man standing next to a little fence, talk to him and he'll give you TM02. The exit stands behind a cut-able bush. Behind it is a Forest Reserve with a lady inside. She will give you TM12, Sweet Scent, which calls Pokemon to you outside of battle.

Go to Goldenrod City. This city is a lot like Celadon City, huge department store, game corner, radio station, big buildings, stuff like that. Now, the gym leader. Her name is Whitney. The good thing about this gym leader and the trainers is that they all use normal Pokemon. One of the trainers uses three Jigglypuff, and the others use them assortedly. So be sure to stop by the PokeCenter and bring back your Pokemon. The gym leader has two Pokemon, a level 18 Clefairy, and a level 20 Miltank. Once you beat her, she'll give you 2000 Yen and TM45. To get the badge, you must talk to her after you beat her, then talk to the trainer right below her, and then talk to her again. Then she will give you the Plain Badge. After you beat Whitney, go to the radio station in Goldenrod City. At the far end of the counter there will be a lady sitting there. Talk to her and she'll give you a quiz. Answer yes, yes, yes, no, yes. She will then give you a radio for your PokeGear. You may wonder around the radio station, but you can't go into some rooms, after you beat the Rockets in Mahogany Town, and come back to Kogane City, you can go inside. I mentioned earlier that there was a game corner. Like before, you must have a coin case. To get this, find one of the two Kogane City buildings that have connecting tunnels. There will be trainers inside, but you're looking for a Pokeball. You'll also find a blue door that's locked, click here to go the section Kogane City section and it says there how to get inside. Anyway, inside the Pokeball is the coin case. Now go gamble. One more important thing to do is go to the bike shop. No voucher is needed, just talk to the owner and he'll hook you up with a free bike. Now go back to the gym and their should be a house next to it. Go inside and talk to the girl. She will give you water that you sprinkle on a tree in Ilex Forest and it will turn into a Pokemon. Their's only one, so be ready to catch it. Route 26

From the house go directly right and you'll come upon a fat guy. He'll give you TM08, which is Rock Breaker. The name describes what it does. Ecruteak (Enjyu) City

First things first, as always, heal your Pokemon at the PokeCenter. In the PokeCenter, you'll find a familiar face, Bill! He'll tell about his time capsule. That is how you get Pokemon from RBY to Gold and Silver. After that, you can go back to Goldenrod City and talk to him, he'll give you an Eevee. Maybe later. Now, the gym. If you don't have a Kadabra, don't even think about going into the gym. Inside the gym are four trainers and the gym leader, Morty. It's a ghost floor so it's pretty hard to get across. Morty has four Ghost Pokemon. A level 21 Gastly, level 21 Haunter, level 25 Gengar, and a level 23 Haunter. If or when you win, you'll get 2300 Yen, TM30 and the Fog Badge. That makes all Pokemon up to level 50 obey you. Now go into the house directly above the PokeCenter. Inside are four dancing daughters, and a man with a hat. Each daughter has one of the Eevee evolutions. Defeat all four of them, then talk to the man with the hat and he'll give you HM03, Surf. Go back to the PokeCenter and then into the tower. You'll immediately fight your Rival. He's not too tough, but after you beat him, be sure and have plenty of balls to catch new Pokemon. Also, you need to teach TM08, Rock Breaker, to a Pokemon. Fight the first trainer and you can fall down the hole in the floor. Then go up to the stone statues and press A, they will then awake and run away. These are the three legendary dogs. It is very rare, but you may find one of them later down the road. They are Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Now exit the tower and go west to find new wild Pokemon, like Snubbull and then south to Oilvine City. Olivine (Asagi) City

First go to the gym. It's okay, the gym leader's not there. But your Rival is, but you don't face him. Talk to him or her and he'll or she'll tell you it's empty. Now leave the gym and go to the house on the left of the PokeCenter. Inside, there are two guys. Talk to both of them until they give you HM04, which is STRENGTH. Done there. Now go to the house to the right of the PokeCenter Now go to the tower at the southeast tip of the town. Go in the tower. Go to the top battling trainers. When you see a hole, fall in it, and it'll take you to the top. Somehow that happens, though it is physically wrong. Talk to Jasmine at the top and she'll say she needs medicine. You can't get it yet. You must talk to her, that triggers something so that you can SURF to Taban City. To get there, go out of the tower and to the west side of town. SURF southwest and it'll be on a lone island.

Go to Cianwood City. Once you get there, heal your Pokemon at the PokeCenter. Then head over to the local gym to face the gym leader, Chuck. Rocks will be in the way, so use STRENGTH and push the left one up, and the middle one to the left. He has two Pokemon, a level 27 Primeape, and a level 30 Poliwrath. If you win, you'll get 3000 Yen, TM01, and the Storm Badge, which makes all Pokemon up to level 70 obey you. Now leave the gym and talk to the lady right outside the gym. She'll give you HM02, FLY. Now go into every house on the island and find the man who will give you a Shuckle (213) if you only have 5 Pokemon with you at the time. Now go to the medicine man in Cianwood City to get Jasmine (from Olivine City) her medicine. Now go outside and SURF, or better yet FLY to Olivine City. Flying would be better because then you wouldn't have to face all of those Tentacools and Tentacruels. Once there, go back to the tower and fall down the hole to the top??? Jasmine is up there. Give her the medicine and she'll take you to the gym. Believe it or not, she's the gym leader. This time you're competing for the Steel Badge. Mikan has three Pokemon, two level 30 Magnemites, and a level 35 Steelix. Besides the Steel Badge, you get 3500 Yen and TM23.

Now go back east to Ecruteak City. Once there, exit the town to the east going on the Route Gate and you'll get to Mt. Mortar while on Route 42. Before you go inside Mt. Mortar, put one Pokemon back in your box. Then go inside the mountain, and their will be a trainer that will give you Baruki if you beat him. But he won't hand him over unless you have five Pokemon with you. Now head out and go north to Mahogany Town.

Once you find Mahogany Town, go north of the town and face the trainers. Keep going until you get to a lake with a Gold Gyrados in the center. SURF out there and catch it. There's only one, so be sure to catch it. Now go back down to Mahogany Town and into the store. Talk to Lance behind the counter and he'll tell you that Team Rocket has a base in Mahogany Town. Be sure your Pokemon are at full strength, many Rocket members battle you inside. Click here for the map of the Team Rocket Hideout.

Now go to the Mahogany Gym. The gym leader, Pryce, uses ice Pokemon. Pokemon like Magmar or Cyndaquil would be good for this match. He has three Pokemon, a level 27 Seel, a level 29 Dewgong, and a level 31 Pilowsine. After you beat Pryce, you'll get a call from Prof. Elm, telling you that Team Rocket is now in Goldenrod City. You'll have to go back there and finish off the Rockets.

Now go back to the radio tower, and you can go to the higher floors this time. Now go up to the higher floors and battle the Rockets. Just beat them all until you get to the top. Then the beat the main Rocket at the top, and he'll give you the key to the blue door in the underground tunnel that I mentioned in the first Kogane City section. And whaddya know, your Rival just happens to be inside waiting for you. You better have your Pokemon healed, because their's more to come. Your Rival has a level 28 Magnemite, a level 30 Golbat and Haunter, and a level 32 Sneasel and the Pokemon he started with in its third stage. After you beat your Rival, you'll find three switches, one right next to the other. There are two more Rocket leaders, male and female. To get to the female leader, step on the three switches in this order, left, center, right. Well, that took a lot of thought. Beat her and then go to the underground tunnel. On the bottom floor, you'll find a man trapped next to a Rocket. Talk to him and he'll give you a card key. On the third floor of the radio tower, you may have noticed one last locked door on the third floor. The card key you just received opens it. Once inside, beat the last two Rocket leaders and the other Rockets. Now finally, the Rockets are gone! Afte you beat the last of the Rockets, the radio tower director will come and give you one of two wings. (Silver: Silver Wing, Gold: Rainbow Wing). They both allow you to catch Ho-oh or Lugia. Go back to the radio tower and people will give you all kinds of stuff. Now head to Mahogany Town and the Ice Path.

The entrance to the ice cave is on the outskirts of the town. It's pretty simple to get through. Though there is one difficult part with the invisible walls. But it's pretty simple. Here's what you do. It's an area with a wall on the left, and several rocks in the room. Walk in on the path and walk to the wall. Then up to the rock. Right to the next rock. Up to the wall. One pace to the right. Down to the previous rock. Left to the rock. Up one pace. Left to the next rock. Down to another rock. Right to the next one. Down to the rock. Right one pace, then up to the rock. And right leads you out of the area. The only real important thing about the Ice Cave is that you get your final HM inside, HM07. HM07 is Waterfall, it allows you to ride up waterfalls. You'll find it inside a Pokeball after the ice slide.

Go to Blackthorn City. When you first go into town, find the little short guy inside a house. He'll have a T.V, a radio, and a bookshelf inside. He will erase TM's and HM's from your Pokemon. You might think this a bad deal, but you probably need to make room for HM's like Whirlpool, which you need to get the eighth badge in the Fusube Gym, and Waterfall, which comes in handy later on. But don't worry, you can always delete them later. On the outskirts of the city near the jumping fences, you'll find Santos. He'll only be there on Saturday. But if you talk to him he'll give you the Spell Tag, but only on. Now, the gym. The leader's name is Clair. If you followed this walkthru correctly, you should be able to gain access to the gym without any hassle. But if you didn't, scroll back up and check carefully, because if you missed something, a guy will be blocking the door. Most events prior to this are very important, and allow you to make your way through the game. It may sound like the game is almost over, well, this is the last new gym. But the game is far from over. The new world rattles down to this, sort of. The last new town. Anyway, Clair has four dragon Pokemon, two level 37 and one level 31 Dragonair, and a level 40 Kingdra. But before you get to Clair, there are lots of obstacles before the real thing. After you beat Clair, you'll receive 4000 Yen. To get the Raging Badge and TM24, you must leave the gym and go behind it and into another cave. You need SURF and WHIRLPOOL inside to get the badge. There are a few Dratinis inside, but nothing major. Finally, on a little patch of land you'll find a Pokeball. Try to open it and Ibuki will reappear. She'll now give you the Rising Badge, which makes all Pokemon obey you, and TM24. Now, FLY back to New Bark Town.

If you are playing Gold, continue reading here. If you are playing Silver, skip this paragraph. First, talk to Prof. Elm, and he'll give you a MasterBall, but don't use it just yet. Do you remember the Rainbow Badge from Goldenrod City? Well, you need that. Now FLY to Ecruteak City. Go to the far north house and go up all of the stairs. Eventually, you'll find one leading to the roof. Just keep walking and you'll get to Ho-oh. Save your game before going into the battle, just in case you don't catch him. Ho-oh is at level 40, so I wouldn't use your MasterBall. Click here for a map to get to Ho-oh. Click here for the end of this section.

Here is how to get Lugia. Before you leave, you'll need a Pokemon with FLY, FLASH and SURF. Also, don't forget to bring the Silver Badge you got in Goldenrod City. FLY to Olivine City and SURF south as far as you can, while staying as far as you can to the right. There are four entrances to Lugia's Cave, so if you stayed to the right the first entrance you come to is the one you want. Once inside, use FLASH and then take a right and go on the top path when it gets to the fork. Now you'll come to a waterfall. SURF down it and Lugia will be there in the water. Lugia is at level 40 and should not be caught with the MasterBall. Click here for a map of the cave.

Now go back to New Bark Town, and heal your Pokemon. Be sure you have a Pokemon with FLY, SURF, and WATERFALL before surfing east off the New Bark Town coast. This is the way to the Pokemon League. You're on your own from here forward.
