PokeMon Yellow Version is much like red and blue versions, but there are some differences. But in the Unknown Dungeon, you can find GLOOM, WEEPINBELL, GRAVELER, LICKITUNG, and SANDSLASH which are not normally found in red/blue versions.
First of all, Pikachu will follow you around during the whole game. You can turn around to check how happy it is, and if it is depressed, you had better get to a PKMN Center soon. To add to that, Pikachu learns different attacks than in red and blue version. The additions are: TAIL WHIP, learned at level 6, DOUBLE TEAM, learned at level 15, SLAM, learned at level 20, THUNDERBOLT, at level 26, and LIGHT SCREEN at level 50. Pikachu doesn't learn SWIFT, which can be a disadvantage, since it never misses.
Also, Gary doesn't start with one of the regular PKMN he usually does. Your rival snags an EEVEE from Prof. Oak. To make matters worse, his EEVEE will evolve into JOLTEON, VAPOREON, and FLAREON depending on how you fare in two different battles.
VAPOREON=Gary's EEVEE will eventually become a VAPOREON if you lose the battle in the lab.
FLAREON=EEVEE will evolve into FLAREON if you win in the lab, but lose or SKIP the battle west of Viridian City.
JOLTEON=Gary's EEVEE will evolve into JOLTEON if you win in both the lab and in Viridian City.
As you know, Ash has more than Gary to fare with in the show. Team Rocket will also appear in the game throughout various points in the game. Don't worry, KOFFING, EKANS, and MEOWTH won't put up much of a fight, even though they will evolve later in the game.
Next, remember how hard it is to find and trade for the other two starting PKMN you didn't choose? Well, the best thing about Yellow Version is that you can get Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander at various points in the game, so you can finally build your PKMN dream team!
BULBASAUR=You get Bulbasaur in the trading post in Cerulean City. The girl will only give you Bulbasaur if you've kept Pikachu extremely healthy and happy.
CHARMANDER=You can get Charmander north of Nugget Bridge (where you fought those five trainers and the member of Team Rocket for a nugget). The guy giving you Charmander is glad to hand him over.
SQUIRTLE=You get Squirtle in Vermilion City. There's a girl who looks like a police officer standing just west of the PKMN Mart, and she will give you the water-type once you fight your electric battle with Lt. Surge.
The only PKMN you can't get in Yellow Version are (including evolved versions):
-WEEDLE
-EKANS
-MEOWTH
-KOFFING
-JYNX
-ELECTRABUZZ
-MAGMAR
Also, the Unknown Dungeon has a different maze than in Red/Blue. We will give you more details later on how to get through that!
