Getting a coin case in the basement tunnel
There are two ways to get into the basement tunnel in Goldenrod City (Hence, a tunnel). The first time you enter this tunnel you will have to battle some of the trainers in it. You will also find an itemball which is actually the coin case for you to store your coins from the Game Corner. Be careful you can only hold a max. of 9999 coins at a time.
Game Corner
After you received your coin case, you can purchase coins at the Game Corner in order to play games. The prices for the coins are: 50 coins for $1000, and 500 coins for $10000. You can win prizes by playing the games here (if you have $$$, you can just purchase enough coins for the prize).

Getting your own radio
Your Pokegear can be upgraded to include a radio. All you have to do is to talk to the lady in the Radio Tower in this city. Answer yes to her question in order to enter the contest. She will then ask you a series of 5 questions and she will give you a radio card if you answer all of them correctly. The correct answers are: yes, yes, no, yes, no.
Changing the nickname of your Pokémon
There is a man who will change the name of your Pokémon for you in Goldenrod City. So, visit him at his house if you want to rename one of your Pokémon.
Underground Tunnel Shops
There are a few shops that do not open all the time in this city. They are all located in the underground tunnel where you get your coin case. Two brothers take turn working in a beauty salon on a daily basis. A old lady opens a Chinese herb store on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday). A discount store owned by a old man sells items cheaper than normal Pokémart every Monday morning. For more information on these shops, go to the Time-based Events section.
Trading a Drowzee for a Machop
Here is a chance for you to get your first fighting Pokémon in the game. A guy on the fifth floor of the department store is willing to trade his Machop for your Drowzee. If you don't have a Drowzee, go catch one of Route 34.
Getting Eevee
Well, not yet, but you should make a note on the house beside the Pokémon Center. Right now there are only a woman and a kid inside. However, after you talk to Masaki in the Pokémon Center of Ecruteak City (the next city), you can return to this house and get Eevee from Bill.
There are a lot of things to explore in this city. However, when you are ready to proceed, just head north to Route 35 to continue your journey. In the tunnel house between Goldenrod City and Route 35, you can get a Spearow from the guard if you will deliver his mail to Route 31. After you delivered his mail, you can talk to the guard again to get a HP up.

ROUTE 35
Things to get:
- TM4 (Itemball on Route 35)
- Paralyze Heal (Itemball in Nature Park)
- Sun Stone (1st prize in bug catching tournament)
- Anti-evolution Stone (2nd prize in bug catching tournament)
- Golden Nut (3rd prize in bug catching tournament)
- Nut (4th prize in bug catching tournament)

- Blue nut (Tree on Route 37)
- Red nut (Tree on Route 37)
Route 35
There are a few trainers waiting to challenge you here. Nothing special except that two trainers are standing across from each other and you have to battle them one after another if you walk into the middle. So, make sure your Pokémon are up to the challenge. There is also an itemball with TM4 here for you to grab. If you keep going north on Route 35, you will reach the Nature Park as soon as you pass the tunnel house. If you go northeast and cut through the tree, you will reach Route 36.
Nature Park
You can enter a Bug Catching Tournament every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays in the Nature Park. Just talk to the guard in the tunnel south of the park and he will give you 20 Pokéballs to use in the tournament. You will only be able to use your first Pokémon that you carry. In this competition, you will be able to catch some rare Pokémon that is not supposed to appear in your version, but you can only keep the last one you catch. The objective is to catch as many rare and strong Pokémon as you can. The tournament ends when 1) you used up your Pokéballs. 2) your Pokémon faints. 3) the time limit of 20 minutes is up. or 4) you chose to end it. You can enter as often as you want, but the event only takes place once each day. The prizes are as follow:
First Sun Stone to evolve certain plant Pokémon
Second Anti-Evolution Stone to stop a Pokémon from evolving when equipped
Third Golden Nut to recover 20 HP in need when equipped
Fourth Nut to recover 10 HP in need when equipped
When you visit the park on the days that the tournament doesn't take place, there are a few trainers here for you to challenge. Also, if you go to the upper east corner of the park, there is an opening without fence that allows you to walk outside the park. There will be an itemball containing paralyze heal for you. You may also be able to catch a new Pokémon (#191) in this park:
Route 36
When you cut your way to Route 36, you notice that there are couple trainers waiting to battle you. Finish them off and keep heading north. You will be blocked by a funny looking tree (it's the same one that blocked you from heading west when you were in Violet City). You should really save your game at this time because once you use your "squirtle liquid" on this tree, it will turn into Usokki (Pokemon #185). There is only one in each game, so you really should try to catch it.
Back towards Violet City
After you captured/defeated Usokki, you should head east back to Violet City. On your way there, you can get a TM8 from the fat guy. In Violet City, there is a hyper potion hiding in a narrow path area. Just cut your way in, and press A in the narrow path. Afterwards, continue head east to Route 31 and give the flower mail (and the Spearow) to another fat guy and he will give you TM50 (If you let the guard in Goldenrod City knows that you delivered the mail, he will give you another HP up). When you are done, head back west to Route 36 and continue west to Route 37.
Route 37
On Route 37, there are a few tough trainers so make sure you are prepared for them. There will be 3 nut trees on this Route and they contain the black nut, blue nut and red nut. They can be used to make special Pokéballs so bring them back to Gantetsu in Azalea Town and he will do the job for you in one day. The upper left tree gives black nut, the upper right tree gives blue nut and the lower tree gives red nut. When you are ready, you can go north into Ecruteak City.

He will tell you that the time capsule will be working the next day. You will then be able to use this device to import Pokémon from the older versions. Afterwards, you can head back to Goldenrod City and get Eevee from Bill. He lives in a house just left of the Pokémon center in Goldenrod City.
Getting HM3
There is a house in this city with dancers using the evolved forms of Eevees (including the two new forms). Defeat all five out them and then talk to the gentleman to get HM3 (surf).
Phantom badge

The gym is like a little maze and you will be sent back to the beginning if you don't walk on the right paths. In order to reach the three legendary dogs, you need to teach TM08 to one of your Pokémon so that you can break up the rocks. If you somehow lost the TM, go buy one at the department store in Goldenrod City. Take a left turn once you get into the Tower, and keep going up until you reach a funny looking rock. Smash the rock open and follow the path until you reach the middle of the Tower. Drop to the basement through the hole and you will see the three legendary dogs are asleep. However, they will all wake up and flee before you can get too close to them. From now on, you will encounter these 3 Pokémon in the wild ever now and then. Check out our FAQ section to find tips on how to capture them. You will also find Magmar in the basement of this Tower. Catch a couple for breeding in order to get the pre-evolved form. After you learnt HM4 Strength, make sure you come back here to get a TM20 at the upper right corner in the basement. Milk can recover 100 HP for your Pokémon but the guy will only sell you one at the time. If you want more, put it in your PC first then come back to buy more. Where is the Gym Leader?
When you enter the Gym in this city, you will notice that the Gym Leader is not present. You need to explore the lighthouse at the lower right corner of this city. There are a few trainers inside using all types of Pokémon, so be prepared. When you reach the fifth floor, you cannot go up any higher. Make sure you pick the TM34 and rare candy. Then, go back down to the fourth floor. On this floor, you will see a hole close to a female trainer. You need to go down this hole in order to come back up in the center of the lighthouse. On your way back up, you will be able to pick up a PP Up on the third floor and a Great Ball on the fifth floor.
When you reach the top of the tower (the sixth floor), you will find Mikan, the Gym Leader of Olivine City. She will tell you that her Pokémon is sick and needs medication. You will need to go to Taban City to get the medicine for her as she cannot leave her Pokémon alone. Before you leave, you can pick up a Super Potion on this floor. The quickest way to get back down to the main floor is by falling into the holes on the side.
Heading to Cianwood City through Sea Route 40
You need to teach a water Pokémon SURF, in order to proceed to the next town through Sea Route 40. This route is located west of Olivine City. If you don't have a water Pokémon yet, you can either fish out some using the good rod you just got (you may be able to catch a new Pokémon (#222) in the water of Olivine city). Alternatively, you can break the rocks by the shore using Rock smash (TM 8) and you will encounter Krabby sometimes. When you are ready, just surf south to Route 40. Note, you no longer need to choose Surf when the Pokémon menu in this version. Just stand beside the water and hit A. There isn't much happening in this route, except some swimmers who will battle you and a high encounter rate of Tentacool and Tentacruel. If you are lucky, you may be able to catch another new Pokémon (226 ) while you are surfing. Ignore all the whirlpools in the water for now, and head south all the way to Cianwood City.
