NEW BARK TOWN
Things to get:
-Pokegear(mom)
-First Pokemon (Prof.Elm)
-Berry(comes with pokemon)
-Potion (prof.elm's assistant)
Getting Pokégear from your mom:
When you go downstairs, your mom will give you back the POKEGEAR that you sent out for repairs. Afterwards, she will ask you for the day of the week. This is also important as there are certain events which occur on a weekly basis. The default day is set at Sunday. Scroll up will turn the day to Monday, etc.. Then, you have to set if the time is at Daylight Saving Time now.
Prof.Elm's Lab
Prof. ELM's Lab is the big house just left of your house. Inside the lab, Prof. ELM will ask you to do a favor for him and go to Mr. Pokémon's house (near Cherrygrove) and bring back his rare discovery. Then, he will let you choose your first Pokémon and inform you that you can heal your Pokémon at his machine.
The three choices of Pokémon are:
Cyndaquil (Fire type -- like a porcupine)
Totodile (Water type -- like a crocodile)
Chikorita (Grass type -- a creature with a leaf on its head)
In contrast to the other Pokémon games, the grass type in this game is the toughest to start with. It is not effective against many of the bugs and birds you will encounter right outside your home town. Also, your first gym battle in Violet City will also be tough since they use flying Pokémon.
The Pokémon you chose will be carrying a Berry. If you equip this kind of fruit to a Pokémon, the Pokémon will recover 10 HP by itself when needed in battle. Before you leave the lab, Prof. Elm's assistant will give you a potion which will heal your Pokémon 20 HP.

Menus:
You can access your menus by pressing the start key during the game play. The Option menu allows you to change the setting such as text speed and sound. The Bag menu displays the items you are carrying. Your bag now has four different compartments. The left pocket is used for carrying healing items like potions and antidotes. The front pocket is used to carry your Pokéballs. The right pocket stores all your TMS and HMS for you. The middle compartment contains important items such as the bicycle and money bag.
Around New Bark Town:
There really isn't anything exciting happening around this town. However, you will notice a strange looking guy sneaking around behind Prof. Elm's Lab. When you try to talk to him, he will push you away. When you talk to the people in this town, someone will tell you that Pikachu is actually an evolved Pokemon (you'll find out soon enough).
When you are ready, head West to Route 29 to start your journey.
ROUTE 29
Things to get:
-Potion (Itemball on grass)
-Berry (fruit bearing tree)
Training your Pokemon:
Train your Pokémon in this grass area, and heal your Pokémon at Prof. Elm's Lab whenever you need to. When the level meter is full, your Pokémon will gain one level. Your Pokémon may learn a different attack at certain levels and its stats will increase with higher level. There is also a potion laying on the grass
In this grass area, you will encounter two new Pokémon. You can find Sentret (#161) during the day and HootHoot (#163)at night.
Getting Fruit from trees:
There are some funny looking trees throughout the game. When you shake them, you will get a certain "fruit" (fruit). If you equip these fruits to your Pokémon, your Pokémon will use them automatically during the battle when it needs to. Some of these fruits are for recovering health while others are for healing poison, etc... These fruits will grow back after one day of game play. In this route, you will find a tree with Berry that can heal your Pokémon for 10 HP.
When your Pokémon reached about LV10, head west to Cherrygrove City.
CHERRYGROVE CITY
Things to get:
- Map Card (old man)
- Berry (tree outside of a house)
- Psncureberry (tree outside of Mr. Pokemon's house)
- Mystery Egg (Mr. Pokemon in his house)
- Pokédex (Prof. Oak in Mr. Pokemon's house)
- Antidote (itemball on Route 31)
- Pokéball (itemball on Route 31)
- Bitterberry (tree on Route 31)
- TM50 (After you delivered mail to fat guy on Route 31)
Getting the town map from the old man:
Before you enter CherryGrove City, an old man will offer to teach you a few things. Say yes to take the tour and he will give you a Map Card to upgrade your Pokegear after he's finished.
Pokémon Center and Pokémart
You can heal your Pokémon for free at the Pokémon Center or buy healing items in the Pokémart. Most major cities will have both of these facilities.
ITEM PRICE
Potion 300
Antidote 100
Paralyze Heal 200
Awakening 250
Getting Pokédex from Prof. Oak (Route 30)
Head North from CherryGrove City. You will reach a house on Route 30 with a tree outside. Get a Berry (heals 10 HP) from the tree and then go inside the house and talk to the man to get another Berry. Continue north and take the right path until you've reached an isolated house (upper right corner of Route 30). On your way to Mr. Pokemon's house you may encounter a new Pokémon. You will find Ledyba(#165) in the morning, and Spinarak(#167, Night) at night. The tree outside of the house will give you a Psncureberry. Inside the house Mr. Pokemon will give you a Mystery Egg while Professor Oak will give you an advanced Pokédex. This advanced Pokédex will allow you to display your list in three different ways. Just press SELECT after you accessed your Pokédex to change the option. Before you leave the house, Mr. Pokemon will heal your Pokémon for you.
Trouble back at Prof. Elm's Lab:
As soon as you leave Mr. Pokemon's house, you will get a call from Prof. Elm. He will tell you that there is trouble in the lab, and you should hurry back to New Bark Town. However, you will encounter the sneaky guy just east of CherryGrove City. Apparently, he has stolen a Pokémon from Prof. Elm's Lab and you will be in your first battle with him. His Pokémon will always be the types with advantages over yours. However, the battle should still be very easy as his Pokémon are still at beginning LV5. After you've won the battle, head east back to New Bark Town.
NEW BARK TOWN
Things to get:
- Pokéballs (from Prof. Elm's assistant in Prof. Elm's Lab)
Back in New Bark Town:
When you reach Prof. Elm's Lab, a cop will inform you about the robbery and ask you to name the guy you just encountered. Then, Prof. Elm will ask you to give him the Egg so he can study it. Before you leave, his assistant will give you 5 Pokéballs. Now, you can start your Pokémon journey.
Now, you should head back to CherryGrove City, then go North to Route 30. This time, take the left path and you will engage in your first trainer's battle. After you've won, you can get this trainer's number by talking to him and he will call you for a rematch. Continue north and then West to Violet City through Route 31 (Don't bother going into the Cave yet). Pick up the two Itemballs on the grass. They contain Antidote and Pokéball, respectively. You can obtain Bitterberry (cures confusion) from the fruit bearing tree on this route. Also, make sure you catch a Bellsprout on your way because someone is going to trade with you in Violet City.
VIOLET CITY
Things to get:
- Parylz Heal (Itemball in Sprout Tower)
- X-Defend (Itemball in Sprout Tower)
- Potion (Itemball in Sprout Tower)
- Escape Rope (Itemball in Sprout Tower)
- HM5 (defeat Master of Sprout Tower)
- ZephyrBadge (defeat Gym Leader in Violet City)
- TM31 (defeat Gym Leader in Violet City)

- Hyper Potion (after you learned cut)
Trading a Bellsprout for an Onix
There is a boy who will trade you an Onix for your Bellsprout at a house in the lower left corner in this city. If you don't have a Bellsprout yet, make sure you come back to trade with the boy as soon as you catch one (there are tons on Route 31). Traded Pokémon will get 1.5 times EXP after a winning battle. It is a much easier way to level up your Pokémon this way. Also, the Onix you get from this trade will come with a Bitterberry.
The Pokémart in this town has some new items for you, especially Pokéball and the price is as follow:
ITEM PRICE
Pokéball 200
Potion 300
Escape Rope 550
Antidote 100
Parlyz Heal 200
Awakening 250
X-Defend 550
X-Attack 500
X-Speed 350
Flower Mail 50
Getting HM5 in Bellsprout Tower
Just North of Violet City, there is a Sprout Tower with trainers using only Bellsprouts (#69). Battle your way through until you reached the top level. There are lots of Itemballs in the tower and they contain Parlyz Heal, X Defend, Potion, and Escape Rope. You will have a little encounter with your rival but there will not be a battle. However, if you want your HM5, you will need to beat the Elder of the Sprout Tower (Sage LI) at this level. The Elder will use two LV 7 Bellsprouts and a LV10 HootHoot (163).
Getting your first badge - ZephyrBadge
When you think you are ready, you can battle the gym in this city to get your first badge. All the trainers and the gym leader use Bird type Pokémon. After you defeat Falkner (uses LV7 Pidgey and LV9 Pidgeotto), he will hand over the ZephyrBadge. It will increase the attack of all your Pokémon and allows you to use Flash in and out of battles. You will also be given a TM31 (Mud Slap) which is an attack that lowers the accuracy of your opponent while it causes some damage (much better than Sand-Attack).
Getting your Egg back
The minute you leave the Violet Gym, you will get a call from Prof. Elm. Make sure you have space for another Pokémon, then talk to his assistant at the Pokémon Center. Answer "Yes" to his question, and you will be given your Egg back. Prof. Elm wants you to carry this Egg with you in your journey because it is the only way it will hatch. This Egg will soon hatch into Togepi.
Afterwards, you may try to head West to Route 36, but you will be blocked by a funny shaking tree. This is actually a Pokémon, but you cannot battle it yet. At this point, head South through the North Entrance to the Ruins of Alph by Route 32
ROUTE 32
Things to get:
- Przcureberry (tree located at North of Route 32)
- Miracle Seed (talk to the first guy on Route 32)
- Potion (Itemball on Route 32)
- Greatball (Itemball on Route 32)
- Poison enhancer (Girl by Pokémon center at night)
- Old fishing Rod (Fisherman in Pokémon Center)
- Potion (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- Greatball (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- X-Attack (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- TM39 (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- X-Defend (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- Awakening (Itemball in Tsun Cave)
- Antidote nut (tree on Route 33)
Puzzles
Head west of Violet City, and you'll run into a few caves. When you enter the uppermost one, you will be presented with a puzzle to solve. Move the boards, until you arranged them into a Kabuto as follows:

After you solved the puzzle, the whole building will shake, and you will be transported into the second cave.

Aerodactyl Puzzle

Ho-oh Puzzle

Omanyte Puzzle
Catching Unown
In this second cave, all the people who were here before are gone now. However, the whole cave is filled with Unown (#201). It has various different shapes but essentially the same Pokémon. Catch three different ones, and proceed to the ladder to leave this cave. If you look at the different shapes of the Unown carefully, you would notice that they are actually the alphabet.
Unowndex
After you exit the cave a Scientist will upgrade your Pokédex for you. Now after you catch a Annon shape it will be recorded under here and you can take a look to see which ones you have by pressing Select while in the Pokédex and then choosing the last option.
Three new Pokémon
After you leave the Ruins of Alph, head South and then East (through the house) until you reach Route 32. Head north a little and you should see a fruit bearing tree with Przcureberry (if you keep heading north, you will get back to Violet City). Head South, and battle your way to the Pokemon Center at the end of this Route. Talk to this first guy on Route 32 (who was blocking this route before) and he will give you a Miracle Seed which can power up attacks of Grass-type. You will also be able to catch three new Pokemons in this area: Mareep (electric, #179) and Hanekko (grass, #187) during the day; Wooper (water, #194) at night. Mareep will learn "Thundershock" at LV9, so train it to be your useful companion. You will also find Itemballs containing a Potion and Great Ball lying on the grass on this route.
When you get to the Pokémon center, make sure you talk to the fisherman and answer "yes" to his question to get a old fishing rod.
Tsun Cave
When you are ready, head into the Tsun Cave just south of the Pokémon center. This cave contains lots of Zubat, Geodude and Sandshrew, so it may be helpful to have a grass or water type Pokémon in your team. Inside this cave, you will find another Superball. Make sure you pick up TM39 from the basement. When you go pass this cave, you will be on Route 33.
Route 33
Head West on Route 33 after you exited the cave. You will have to fight a trainer using aGeodude and a Machop. You will also notice a cave with a guy blocking the entrance. You won't be able to get in just yet, so continue West until you reach Azalea Town
AZALEA TOWN
Things to get:
- White nut (tree behind Gantetsu's house)
- Super Potion (Itemball inside Slowpoke cave)
- Lureball (from Gantetsu after rescuing Slowpokes)<
- Speedball (brings White nut to Gantetsu)
- Insect Badge (defeat Gym Leader)
- TM49 (defeat Gym Leader)
Pokémart
A few new items here for sale. If you don't want to be bothered by all the wild Pokémon, stock up on Repel here. Super potion will heal 50 HP instead of the normal 20 HP.
ITEM PRICE
Wood 9800
Pokéball 200
Potion 300
Super Potion 700
Escape Rope 550
Repel 350
Antidote 100
Paralyze Heal 200
Flower Mail 50
Rescuing the Slowpokes
Talk to Gantetsu in his house located left of the Pokemon Center. He will rush out. Follow him to the well that was previously blocked. Defeat Team Rocket to rescue the Slowpokes. Gantetsu will then transport you to his house. Inside the house, he will show his gratitude by giving you a Lureball. Also, he will make different Pokéballs for you if you bring him the special nuts. For example, if you bring him the white nut from the tree just outside of his house, he will make you a Speedball. However, it will take him one whole day for each Pokéball he makes for you. No charge.
Getting your second badge - Insect Badge
After you rescued the Slowpokes, the guy blocking the gym will be gone so you can challenge the gym leader for your second badge. This gym uses Insect Pokémon, so bird and fire types will be in advantage of them. After you defeat Tsukushi (uses LV14 Metapod, LV14 Kakuna and LV16 Scyther), she will hand over the "Insect" badge. It will allow you to control Pokémon up to LV30 and use CUT in and out of battles. You will also be given a TM49 "Mega Slash"
Battling your opponent again
Just when you are about to leave town to Route 34, your opponent will show up again. He will now have three Pokémon: LV12 Gastly, LV14 Zubat and LV16 Arikeitsu (#159). If you have a Denryuu (#181) or even a Mokoko (#180), the battle will not be difficult at all. After you defeat him, you can continue to Route 34. Heal at Pokémon Center if you need to before you proceed to ilex Forest
>
ILEX FOREST
Things to get:
- HM1 (after you chase Farfetch'd back to its owner)
- Revive (Itemball in Ubame Forest)
- Super Potion (Secret item in Ubame Forest)
- TM2 (Guy with green hair in Ubame Forest)
- TM12 (Girl in blue beside a Butterfree)
Catching Farfetch'd for its owner
This forest doesn't get a lot of sunlight. You need to help a guy to chase his Farfetch'd back to him in order to get HM1 (Cut). The best way to achieve this is to get behind the bird by going around the forest to get to it from the North. When you get the bird to go back to its owner, talk to a guy to claim your HM1. Even without any tall grass, there are wild Pokémon in this area so make sure your Pokémon are healed before you head into this forest.
Using HMs
In Pokémon Gold/Silver, you don't need to call out your Pokémon to perform the HM required. All you need to do is to teach a Pokémon the HM and then stand in front of the place where HM skill is required. This makes life so much easier. Also, as opposed to the previous versions, you can make a Pokémon forgets its HM moves in this game. You just have to wait until you get to Fusube City much later in the game. After you cut your way to the upper part of the forest, there is a hidden Super Potion, so make sure you pick it up.
Getting TMs
You can pick up TM2 from a guy with green hair in this forest. All you have to do is talk to him. Also, before you head out to Route 34, you can get TM12 from this lady in blue dress inside the tunnel house.
Pokémon Daycare Center on Route 34
There are a few trainers in Route 34 who are dying to challenge you. They use all different kinds of Pokémon so make sure you are prepared for them. In this route, there is a house with a old man and a old lady in it. They will level up your Pokémon for you for a price. Also, you can breed and cross-breed your Pokémon here. The baby Pokémon will inherit the attacks of its parents and it will also have better stats. Go to our breeding section section for more details.
Continue north and you will hit the largest city in this map, the GoldenRod City
GOLDENROD CITY
Things to get:
- Bike (from the Bike shop beside the department store)
- Regular Badge (defeat Gym Leader)
- TM45 (defeat Gym Leader)
- TM27 (lady on fifth floor of department store)
- TM41 (fifth floor of department store)
- TM48 (fifth floor of department store)
- TM33 (fifth floor of department store)
- TM02 (fifth floor of department store)
- Coin case (basement tunnel)
- TM25 (5500 coins at Game Corner)
- TM14 (5500 coins at Game Corner)
- TM38 (5500 coins at Game Corner)
- Radio (lady at the Radio Tower)
- HP up (guard in the tunnel house to Route 35)
Free bicycle
You can get a bicycle for free at the Miracle Bike Shop beside the big department store. You need to go around in order to get to it. Your travel speed is two times faster than your walking speed when you are riding the bicycle.
Regular badge
You can challenge the gym anytime you feel ready. The trainers in this gym use only normal type Pokémon . They are not too tough if you trained your Pokémon well. However, the gym leader Akane uses a LV18 Clefairy and a LV20 Mirutank. Mirutank has a lot of HP and it is equipped with recovering milk so be prepare. You should either paralyze it or put it to sleep first or else it may become a long battle. After you defeat Akane, she still won't give you your badge. However, another trainer will talk to you and then you can talk to Akane the second time in order to get your badge and TM45. The regular badge will allow you to use HM4 (strength) in and out of battles.
