Pokemon
If you don't know any Japanese, then I suspect your have either the Red or the Blue English version of Pocket Monsters(Pokemon). This area is based on the Red, Blue, and Green version of pokemon whether it be in Japanese or English. The reason I say this is because Pokemon Yellow is quite different from the other pokemon colours.
You start off the game in your own house. You proceed out into the wild and venture into the bush when Dr. Oak approaches you. "Wait!", he says "its dangerous out there! You need a pokemon for protection!" You follow Dr. Oak into his study center and along with Dr. Oak is your rival. You get to pick between three pokemon. Bulbasaur, a grass pokemon, Squirtle, a water pokemon, and Charmander, a fire pokemon as seen below.
When you get your pokemon, your rival picks the pokemon that would work best against yours. For example, if you pick Bulbasaur, your rival will pick Charmander since fire is very effective against grass. When you try to leave, your rival cahllenges you to your first battle.
The two cartridges of pokemon don't vary to much except for the fact that there are 11 pokemon in each version that the other version will not have. Here is a list of the pokemon unique to each of the versions.

Another very important thing to remember when playing pokemon is to TRADE!!! Pokemon that have a different owner name and ID number get 1.5 times more experience than a normal pokemon would. Also, there are four pokemon that will only evolve when you trade them. These pokemon are Goorikii/Machoke, Goosuto/Haunter, Yungeraa/Kadabra, and Goroon/Graveler. These pokemon will only evolve when traded.
The last important thing to remember is the raise your pokemon wisely. The Pokemon Sodatesayan/Pokemon Babysitter is something you definitely do not want to do. Even though the thought of getting one experience point per step is tantalizing, the pokemon's stats go up much slower and also may not learn some good abilities. Regarding the transformation stones (this is important!): Do not use a stone on a pokemon unless it is at a highler level (as in 60s or 70s) because the pokemon will stop learning abilities. A L:17 Raichu will not learn any abilities other than the ones he already has. Also, the growth percentage of the pokemon's stats also greatly lowers when the pokemon evolves. A L:99 Pikachu could easily kick a L:99 Raichu's butt that was evolved at L:40 or even L:60.
