My Picture

This poem is dedicated to my Mom, Barbara, who has terminal cancer.

WHY MUST IT BE HER?

It just isn't fair, Lord...
Why must it be her?
A lifetime of anguish,
She's had to endure.

If doesn't seem right, Lord...
That she be so ill.
She's already known heartaches
That most never will.

I don't understand, Lord...
Why you've let this be.
She's suffered so much, Lord...
Why wasn't it me?

THE HAWK AND THE DOVE

Your eyes burn deep into my soul
A fiery promise with every glance
No future offered, not even tomorrow
My heart may lose... Are you worth the chance?

Your magic wand has cast a spell
You intrigue me, far beyond all measure
A giving spirit, a tender heart
The loving you I've grown to treasure

Your words can stir me, like no other
Yet your tongue sends me both ice and fire
Hold it tight ... then hold me tighter
Come to me, Lover, with unbridled desire

You're close to me always ... unseen, embracing
Breathing passion to the depths of me
The Hawk descends ... the dove surrenders
As you now share my destiny

WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME

Come walk with me now,
Before it turns cold;
Before it's too dark;
Before we grow old.
Too soon the poet will run out of rhyme;
Too soon we, too, will run out of time.

Come dance with me now,
Before there is rain;
Before there is sorrow;
Before there is pain.
Too soon the forest will run out of pine;
Too soon we, too, will run out of time.

Come laugh with me now,
Before there is hate;
Before there is nothing;
Before it's too late.
Too soon this tavern will run out of wine;
Too soon we, too, will run out of time.

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MORNING AFTER

The Night Before The Morning After
Determination for contentment,
As the Cold Duck keeps you warm.
Disregarding consequences,
In the calm, before the storm.

Sharing precious time together,
Filled with sweet, defiant laughter.
Never caring what might happen,
The night before the morning after.

The Gift of Cancer
for you, Mom

The Lord searched His green earth
For an angel He'd sent there
He had a special gift for her
He sent it wrapped in prayer

With ribbons of compassion
Love entwined each bow
He gave her much, so she could give
And say, "I really know"...

He knew she would accept His gift
Her faith would help her bear it
Unlike some others, lost in self
He knew that she would share it

And share her gift, indeed she does
She lives and feels the pain
She seeks the other 'gifted' ones
And relives it all again

She does embrace God's special gift
Metastasized, breast to bone
Remaining His faithful Earth-Angel
Until He calls her home

THE DREAMER

Let me come closer, but don't ask for more
We've both had our share of heartaches before

Believing in someone comes only with time
Trust will grow stronger with each hill we climb

No, my friend, it's not a dream
Yet things are not what they may seem

For when one finds a love, as ours
The rose is thornless; the weeds are flowers

We see the world through lovers eyes
And so, each fault, we minimize

I'm not your dream - I'm here - I'm real
And I'm scared, like you, of what I feel

I too, am afraid to reach out again
If only you knew how long it's been -

Since I've felt so special, so loved, so warm
So sheltered from life's raging storm

Somehow, with you, I feel secure
Why? I cannot say for sure

Maybe it's just that you let me be me
You don't try to change the woman you see

But I'm not a dream - dreams fade away
They're sleepy thoughts that never stay

They only hear the dreamers voice
Who plots each scene and leaves no choice

Of what the other dares to do
That isn't fair to me or you

Come closer now, and I'll try too
We'll be each others dream come true

FOREVER IN MY HEART

If it's true, "love conquers all,"
Why do I feel so unsure?
Why are we so far apart?
Can we go back, as we once were?

Why is our love being tested?
(We both know our love is true)
I need to have a better reason,
Why I can't be there with you.

I want to feel your arms around me;
I long for you each lonely night.
I need the love you've always shown me -
Reassurance, to make things right.

But if we cannot be together,
I hope you know, while we're apart,
How much I love you, now, and always,
I hold you ever in my heart.

HE SAID HE'D BE HOME EARLY

He said he'd be home early
And thought I didn't doubt him
I had this funny feeling
(there was something strange about him)

He asked me for some money
Then promised there'd be change
But as he made his promise
He looked at me so strange

As if his eyes could tell me
"Please don't ask what it's for"
I remember wanting to stop him...
Too late - he closed the door

Then I recalled the message
I had gotten yesterday
it said, "Your old man owes me,
But I'll give him one more day."

Just one more day is all we have
To pay that past-due bill
We never had much money
We probably never will

I remember now ... the phone call
Later on that very day
"It's urgent that we see you,
Could you make it right away?"

The ride, it seemed like hours
But I finally found the place
When I realized just where I was
The tears poured down my face

"We need you to identify
John Doe in Chamber two
He died today - an overdose -
Was he someone that you knew?"

He said he'd be home early
(The words now make me cry)
I have the strangest feeling
That he didn't even try.

THE LITTLE ANGEL

The Lord looked down and said to me
I see you have such love
Watch over my little angel
I'm sending from above

You'll be the perfect mother
But added with a smile
She can't be yours forever
It's only for awhile

I watched my little angel grow
I watched her everyday
I knew she wasn't mine to keep
She'd go back home one day

Our days together passed so quick
Yet each was filled with love
And every day a prayer was said
To thank the Lord above

For sending me His angel
For as long as it could be
And now His little angel
Is watching over me.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

As quickly as the darkness forms,
I feel confused and insecure
I come to you for reassurance,
To know we are as we once were.

For questions you have left unanswered,
Only linger in my mind.
And I must rid this inner doubt,
Before the past will stay behind.

Remember though, our love is stronger
From each hardship we've been through.
I love you, but please understand,
My peace of mind must come from you.

A CYBER ROSE

He came to me...past midnight hour
A stranger with one enticing flower
A brief encounter...intrigue grows...
He brought me my first Cyber Rose...

The world stands still...my heart does too
Those come-on lines...I'd heard, and knew
But, now these words...felt head to toes
Were sweetened by his Cyber Rose...

The words are soft ... romantic ... charming
His crafted skill is most disarming...
He melts my heart...I know, he knows
He touched it with his Cyber Rose...

In thought...in word...yet, not in deed
I'm mesmerized by what I read...
In my heart, a warmness flows
Whenever he comes with his Cyber Rose...

My White Knight...far, yet close to me
His gifted prose, he sends to me...
We'll never meet...I know, he knows
But, I'll always cherish his Cyber Rose

To the White Knight with the Cyber Rose
