ROCKIES, ROPERS AND DREAMS

When a woman falls for a cowboy,
she can't wear her heart on her sleeve,
she must give him the time to make up his mind,
she's the one he can always believe.

She can't have designs or convictions,
to change what he has to be,
'cause ya can't force the course of no river,
when it changes so naturally.

When a cowboy sits by the camp fire,
it ain't always because he is cold,
he may watch the smoke rise to them dark dreary skies,
but those embers will light up his soul.

His eyes will grow distant and starry,
far beyond that flickering flame,
as each spark from that fire carries him higher,
to a feeling he just can't explain.

And if she's part of that feelin',
then she's done the best that she can,
with the Rockies and Ropers she's chosen,
to win the heart of her man.

'Cause ya can't change the course of no river,
and ya can't put no brand on the wind,
and ya can't win the heart of no cowboy,
with kisses, perfume and grins.

Ya can't toss no rope on a season,
and make it stay a long while,
'cause the seasons will change out there on the range,
by the camp fire it just takes awhile.

THE SHELL OF A WOMAN

All that he left me is what a woman can keep
I tremble in the darkness, I cry in my sleep
My soul's got a secret that makes my heart weep
I'm the shell of a woman
My love it was honest, my heart it was true
he tore them apart, he broke them in two
add all them years he left me so blue
and I'm the shell of a woman
The shell of a woman, lost all alone
he walks through my memories,
in my heart with my soul
I made him my life, tried the best that I can
now all that's left is the shell of a woman
my body it gave, him the best of its years
all that he gave me were heartache and tears
he left me so empty but I'd done all i can
now I'm just the shell of a woman
I gave him my heart, my soul and my trust
when he had it all, he ground them to dust
so in trembling hope I pray for a plan
cause I'm just the shell of a woman
My love it did bloom, my love it did bear
a boy and girl we now have to share
and them kids are too young to even understand
and I'm the shell of a woman
My loves like an angel that fell from the sky
it can never return so slowly it must die
now I look to the heavens to get through this pain
'cause my love is like an angel - dyin' in vain

THE ANGELS OF MY NATURE

by the angels of my nature
and my souls raging fire
my mind thinks of nothing
but the words you inspire
they sweep through my existence,
my very being has no say
I can't go back before you
lest my soul be cast away
'cause there's nothing before you
that slate's been wiped clean
now time's just a meter
for what forever can mean
'cause all the horns in heaven
would have to learn the blues
for God to take me - to before I met you
now our friendship's been troubled
but our friendship's been true
and those angels can't help us
'cause they can't play the blues
so tell me one time what's in your heart
please tell me sweet darling
let's make a new start

... AND THEN IT RAINS

The feel of heartaches like sudden hard rain
with thunder clouds risen from a soul filled with pain.
It reaches the rivers and canyons of the mind -
overflowing them with sorrow 'til existence is blind -
... and then it rains.

The feel of a heartache's like a long winter storm -
blocking the feelings of a love once so warm -
freezing tomarrows and yesterdays -
like the icicles of winter that only time melts away -
... and then it rains.

The sound of a heartaches like a storm on the shore -
pounding sand castles with a thunderous roar -
each one's a memory or a beautiful dream -
but when the storm's over the beach it is clean-
... and then it rains.

The rains from the heart, the rains from the soul -
the rains from the love that went warm to cold -
the rains from the eye - for that love didn't grow -
the eyes get the tears - but the heart the rainbow.

LAY ME DOWN IN SADNESS

lay me down in sadness Lord
upon the shores of time
and let the waves wipe away my soul...
and the memories of what I've left behind..
and the love I had for a girl not long ago
let it lay beside me from that far and distant shore
the happiness and joy that I once knew..
give me just that minute Lord and let me die in peace
without the pain the sadness and the blues
Lord that's me today

SAGE BRUSH COWBOY

along time ago in west Texas
late night out on the plains
a cowboy tied string on the sagebrush
and let it roll out cross the plains
it wasn't because he was crazy
or didn't have nothing to do
the light of the fire kindled desire
for a woman that cowboy knew
he didn't have no phone to call her
nor mail could he send or receive
so there wasn't no point in writing
a letter she'd never receive
but still his poor heart demanded
that somehow he ease its pain
so the string was really his feelings'
that he let roll out cross the plains
his mind knew she'd never see it
but his poor heart it didn't care
cause his soul had to sit by that campfire
with emotions fillin' the air
sometimes another would eye it
but they'd always leave it alone
cause they all knew that they'd done it too
just the otherside of lonesome for home
along time ago in west Texas
while sittin' by the campfires light
a cowboy made up some sad songs
while that tumbleweed rolled through the night
now I'm a long ways from Texas
and ain't got no phone by my side
so there's a string on this tree
for you from me
to let you know darling I tried

PORTRAIT OF A TAVERN

Well I walked into the darkness of a tavern all alone
searching for some laughter for the night
but inside I found that the people's happy sounds
were drowning dreams in beer with faded lights
on its walls were hung the tapestry
of individual tragedy
then covered with a portrait of romance
as they hold each other tight in the darkness of the light
but think of someone else as they both dance
Through the beverage bottled mirrors and the broken bar lights beams
in a crowded smoke filled room where the music sets the scene
the wounded soul gets hypnotized and its ego tends to sympathize
so we live deceptive lives of intoxic tragic dreams
for there's a sadness in the whisper of the nights we spend alone
that echoes through the caverns of the taverns where we go
as the memories leave traces of life's painful road in places
in the shallows of the river of the soul
But when the dawn has spoken and its silence goes unbroken
out upon the highway heading home
sadness fills the thoughts of how much we loved what's lost
and we realize we're more than just alone

A SOLDIERS LAST LETTER

(Soul Of A Tree)

A soldier was buried today on the hill
and afterward one woman read
the words he had written in his last letter
to his sweetheart and here's how it read
Darling only a short time remains
and you're oh so far away
I'd like to describe one last time how I love you
but I can't find the right words to say
I lay here and stare at a tall tree outside
somehow it reminds me of a man
but the words to describe how that tree makes me feel
come easy..to this young dying man
From small little seeds grow towering trees
that reach out for the sun in the sky
From small little boys grow strong healthy men
to go off to war and to die
Then the souls of these men rise up to the heavens
only to earth to return
in another small boy with a memory forgotten
of the lessons he's already learned
But that same tree still stands and it lives a long time
'cause it bends with the powers of earth
while men live in violence only to die
and in small boys their souls find rebirth
While that tree still stands tall and it lives a long time
'cause it bends through its life with the winds
yet a man's like a tree too stiff to bend
so it breaks from the weight of his sins
A soldier was buried today on the hill
and afterwards one woman read
some beautiful words that man had once written
but now he's forgotten ... and dead

A TIME FOR US

The yard it is quiet and the house it is calm
I still drink my coffee on the back porch 'fore dawn
Where my memories have grown-as big as that tree
that all of us planted when she was just three
and the grass in that corner has finally filled in
where the sand box then dog house both had once been
That fence now is gone with all of its charm
it held little feet in--and kept out all harm
Their absence of presence bring strangeness and grace
now that the kids are all grown, it ain't the same place
So now I spend time just before dawn
remembering but planning 'cause they're all married and gone
So in sessions of silent sweet thought I dispose
cooked all of those meals-washed all of them clothes
Her room would make a nice study
and my husband said that would do fine
He even suggested a computer
So we all could keep touch on line
The washroom could now be much smaller
I'd prefer it be even upstairs
then that basement could soon
become his rec-room
He's retired - that would only be fair
The kids may be gone
and those memories live on
but now it our time
to love - not dispare
