SILENT NIGHT

Moonlight pierces silent gloom
Illuminating your fragile form
As in my arms I hold you close
To keep you safe and warm
I gaze upon your idyllic face
Softly kiss your tender lips
Hold my breath as you gently stir
Relax as back into dreams you slip
So still and quiet is the night
Soon darkness gives way to day
And brightly vested songbirds
Serenade us where we lay
Two lost souls now as one
Blind to all but each other's love
Sharing heaven here on earth
With spirits soaring high above

MORNING LIGHT

Raindrops fall on glassy pane
Clear as crystal, such gentle sound
Nature's tears are shed again
Welcomed by all life around
And in the misty morning light
Lovers stir from dreaming sleep
Soft whispers shared in the dawn
Renewing passion that runs so deep
Lost within a surreal world
Full of desires, to all else blind
Moving together, become as one
Sharing body, soul and mind
Time so slowly passes by
All is bathed in cold bright day
Save for the warmth of tender touch
As together their spirits drift away

Dave was walking through the gardens at Bath University in England on a beautiful day early in July. He noticed that several trees had remembrance plaques to people, some of whom had died very young. The plaques said only, "In Loving Memory". He felt there should have been more, so he wrote this for them.

I hope you will be as touched with the beauty and feelings in this poem as I am and with its poet. It seems to me that much of what poetry is about or should be, is feelings. He has touched my heart in a way it's never been before, that he would feel these people he had never known should have had a better tribute than the oft repeated and meaningless phrase, "In Loving Memory" and he took it upon himself to pay tribute to them himself. With the writing of "Spirits Walk Among Us", they are now more lovingly remembered.

My Picture

SPIRITS WALK AMONG US

Such peaceful natural beauty
On this sultry summers day
With subtle breaths of wind
As if all nature is at play
The rustling of green leaves
Attracts attention from passers by
Whose gaze is drawn to a plaque below
Over which they cast their eyes
The name of someone's departed loved one
Inscribed on metal for all to see
So few words to mark their life
Always "In Loving Memory"
Some were here so briefly
Such short life that has sadly gone
Now visited with cut flowers
Show loving thoughts may linger on
But not all have yet departed
Their souls still on this earthly plain
Evasive as fleeting shadows
Like a ghost haunting some domain
And their spirits walk among us
To give a guiding light
Providing comfort to those who need it
Before ascending in final flight.

STARLIGHT

Just to spend my time with you
As we gaze at moonless skies
A myriad of pinpoint stars
So hypnotic they mesmerize
And as you watch with eyes so bright
Feel these arms that draw you near
Quiet whispers in the cool dark night
Gentle words only you can hear
Lips caressing such sweet flesh
Delicate perfume fills the mind
Intoxicates and steals all thoughts
Until lost souls are together entwined
Beneath these named astral bodies
All myths and legends so sublime
Sharing love's undying passions
Basic instincts from the beginning of time

REALITY

I sat with you tonight
Cool darkness all around
Sweet music playing softly
With a haunting soothing sound
Reaching out to caress your cheek
Gazing deep into your eyes
Tried to stroke your silken hair
Only then sadly did I realize
That this Angel that's before me
Lips inviting, with a look so serene
Is but a tantalizing portrait
On a cold computer screen
But the warmth I sense inside
Has robbed me of restful sleep
As my desires I cannot hide
So this lonely vigil forever will I keep.

VIRTUAL LOVE

If I could only find sweet words
That may show the way I feel
And open up this heart
To free passion long concealed
How this love for you has grown
With each and every day
Fulfilling so many dark desires
As in each other's minds we play
For you have enthralled me so
That my one remaining wish
Is to take you in my arms
Whilst I steal a tender kiss
Holding you so near
Gazing deep into your eyes
Sparkling like precious gems
Reflect all colours of the skies
An angel from on high
Sensual seductress yet discrete
Just by sharing thoughts with you
Will make this life complete

MEMORIES OF MY GRAN

Fond memories I have of you
As a child I would hear you sing
As you set about your daily tasks
Sweet joy your voice would bring
Though with a smile I sit and think
Not always in tune or on song
But in my heart I will always feel
That you could do no wrong
You always had time for others
Rarely for yourself
Always busy, never resting
Even when in poor health
And on the day your beloved Alf was taken
Saddened at being on your own
It was all I could do to hold you near
You seemed lost and so alone
The loneliness and grief we shared
My emotions I could not hide
For deep within my heart I felt
Your longing to be at his side
But little did I realize
The cruel trick fate would play
I could not bear to see you thus
Felt compelled to stay away
No smile upon your lips
Or recognition in your face
I hated every second
You remained in that place
Surrounded by strange faces
Old souls just waiting to die
Pausing for one brief moment
Before leaving with no good-bye
And when Death finally claimed you
With mixed feelings I bid you farewell
Knowing now your pain was over
Set free from my living Hell
I hope you have again found happiness
In the place you longed to be
As I sit here and watch your flowers grow
Treasuring precious memories you left to me

My Picture

FOR MY GRANDAD

Dark winter nights
Spent sitting round the fire
Gently flickering flames
Play tricks upon the eyes
The old man in the corner
Child resting by his knee
Listens for his every word
Another story telling spree
Stories from the Coal Mine
The good times and the sad
Now just distant memories
Of the comradeship we had
Silence in the firelight
As he stops to light his pipe
Sending smoke swirls up to Heaven
Like lost souls in final flight
His words are now so distant
Not heard but far away
To me he is still speaking
As clear t'were yesterday
And though my hearts still heavy
And my eyes will fill with tears
My sadness will be lifted
With the passing of the years
But if these words have touched you
Take heart and let me say
They will be with folks aplenty
All friends to share their day
And when we are all gathered
Wherever that may be
Speak soft to those with smoke around them
For it will be my Grandad and me.

LAST GOOD-BYE

Sad thoughts of you return again
Of when I gazed upon a frail old man
No words spoken to break the silence
So little strength as you squeezed my hand
Watching when you gently stirred
Your tired eyes that said so much
Hoping that moment would last forever
Sharing feelings with only tender touch
Remembering all those early years
How you cared and helped me grow
Our roles reversed as time passed by
Until the dark day I was left alone
But only the memories now remain
Of the way things used to be
The times we shared providing comfort
Feeling that you still watch over me

CONFUSION

No sounds save for gentle breath
Soft gaze, but empty vacant eyes
Mind so calm yet full of thoughts
As though the Spirit elsewhere lies
Semi-conscious of the world around
Oblivious to all that's humankind
A heavy heart still slowly beating
Now just simply marking time
So many feelings, raw emotion
All seem new but are old as time
Deep within love lies waiting
On the surface appears benign
Kind words are offered to no avail
So much sadness with soul resigned
Finds no escape from lonely torment
And inner peace is still denied

I DREAM OF YOU

I dream of you, with stars above
In the stillness of the night
Longing to hold you so close
And see your eyes reflect pale moonlight
Searching for words to send
Wrapped in kisses soft and sweet
To be there as you wake
For your warm lips to greet
Just to share these desires
That burn deep within my heart
I would sell my soul to be with you
So we would never be apart
Whispering endless words of love
With a passionate fire so bright
All the darkness will be lifted
As our spirits together take flight.

SHOULD YOU EVER BE SAD

Should you ever be sad
As if all you hoped for is gone
I'll be there with you
Giving you strength to go on
And should your steps falter
Wishing from the world you could hide
With my love I'll support you
Always close by your side
And if life's tangled web
Raises worry or fear
Read these words softly
For they'll bring me near
So rest your head on my shoulder
Let no tears mark your face
As I hold you so warmly
In sweet tender embrace
All of these things
Are so easy to do
For one in this World
As precious as you

DAWN'S SOFT LIGHT

As dawns soft light
Caresses once dark lands
Like a new found lovers
Sensual tentative hands
Natures slumbering world
Bright with glistening dew
Brings forth new life
Moving slowly into view
As all earthly creatures
Awaken, their lives to resume
And brightly coloured flowers
Fill the air with sweet perfume
A myriad of feelings
All natures' beauty unrefined
Like loves first tender kiss
Remains carved in the mind

CAR BOOT SALE

Sifting through old boxes
Scattered on the floor
Someones forgotten treasure
Not wanted anymore
Stacks of old records
Fusty mildewed books
Once a prized possession
Now hardly worth a look
Attracting little interest
Once held in high esteem
As they check thru' peculiar items
I wonder who else's eyes have seen
Now just a box of memories
That were collected at great expense
Are carelessly tossed together
Yours for just a few pence

FROM THE HEART

Like the morning dew, natures soft kiss for all life
Like a mountain view, breathtaking to the eyes
Like an ocean scene, power and beauty contained in one
Like a new full moon, so soft and so serene
Like a gentle breeze, so refreshing, caresses everything
Like the Summer rain, always welcome never scorned
Like a child's innocent laughter, fills the heart with pure joy
Like a new found love, experienced by every girl and boy
Like a sweet smile on sensuous lips, lifts the heart as spirits soar
Like an ancient goddess, worshipped from afar
Like the stars above, impossible to touch
Like unrequited love, so distant, out of reach
Like a lonely soul, only your words can set free
For you my love, are all these things to me.

THOUGHTS

Endless nights
With lonely heart
Once kindred spirits
Now drifting apart
Where words of love
Were once shared
Soft tender thoughts
Seem never to be heard
Where each bright new dawn
Meant a new brighter day
Now only shows
Time is slipping away
So many mixed feelings
Numerous as stars up above
Unable to share them
Trapped in a world without love

IF

If I could warm your heart
When all around seems cold
If I could keep you young
Protect you from ever feeling old
If I could calm your thoughts
Remove all your sadness and fears
If I could make you smile
Prevent you from ever shedding tears
If I could hold you close
With starry skies above
If I could spend my time
Whispering undying words of love
If I could quench my desires
With just one sweet tender kiss
Then my life will seem worth living
Instead of living simply to exist

HEART AND SOUL

You are my heart
You are my soul
My forever and today
You are the one I long for
In a very special way
I miss your tender kisses
Your sweet and gentle caress
Hold me in your arms my love
On your shoulder my head will rest
My eyes will slowly close
Peace is what I feel
Surrounded by your warm sweet love
So soothing so surreal
You are my one and only
You mean the world to me
Come close and let me love you
Let me hold you tenderly

My Picture

MY HEAVEN

You want to see my heaven, take my hand and follow me
Tread softly and then gently look around to see
My heaven is my mountains, my mountains are my heart
Both are buried in my soul, never to be apart
For deep inside those mountains and the valleys down below
Is where I find my inner peace, it's where I need to go
Sitting by my tiny lake, listening to the wind
Tender rays of sunlight softly seeping in
Reflections on the water that is oh so crystal clear
Beautiful for floating in as you look towards the sky
The birds are just like angels, listen to their cry
Its here I look at memories, the ones I hold so dear
It's my little bit heaven; it's where I have no fear
Enjoy my little heaven, it's the only one I have
Love and understand it, treasure it like gold
Stand upon the mountaintop and feel the souls of old
Look to the sky above, see the stars that shine so bright
Reflecting the inner beauty of an Aussie land at night
Listen to the sounds around and feel them with your heart
This is where my heaven is, never will we part...

TRUE FRIEND

Your friendship means so much
As we share our hopes and fear
And at the times when you are sad
My heart aches to hold you near
You are such a special person
I would never laugh at you
I smile as I read your words
Telling of all the things you do
But look deep into my eyes
See the feeling that is there
The smile upon my lips
Simply shows I really care
To be close by your side
Is not a dream, but destiny
For deep within my heart
Is the place you'll always be.

DEEP THOUGHTS

As birds sing serenades
In the last light of day
And night casts its veil
Fading colours all to grey
All senses cast adrift
No tender thoughts to share
That brings the spirit low
To plumb the depths of despair
With eyes peering into darkness
Seeking answers from all around
But there are no answers here
Only deeper questions to be found
Another restless lonely night
With mixed feelings down inside
Building barriers with words
So reality can be denied.

TO FEEL THE GENTLE BREEZE

To feel the gentle breeze
It's soft and warm embrace
And wonder if you too
Felt its caress upon your face
To have your arms around me
Hear my name upon your lips
To gaze deep into your eyes
Taste so sweet and tender kiss
To stroll amongst old trees
Take you lightly by the hand
Show you visions through my eyes
Of Natures beauteous land
Dappled sunlight on green leaves
Dewy cobwebs spun like fine lace
But the world still feels so empty
Without your presence in this place

FOR SHEP

I was not there with you
When your life came to an end
Just received a message
That at first I couldn't comprehend
So chillingly succinct
Saying that you had passed away
I remember all too clearly
Feeling cold that warm September day
Silently we journeyed
To be there at your side
Confused by my sense of loss
My sadness I could not hide
Overwhelmed by all my feelings
As we walked to where you lay
How lonely were your surroundings
On that sad now distant day
Oh so softly I caressed you
As I gazed upon your face
Then gently I did carry you
To your final resting place
I laid you under the Autumn stars
Beneath your favourite apple tree
Said farewell for the very last time
Now your spirit could run free
And as I sit alone this night
My heart feels chilled right thru'
With trembling soul I realize
My first true friend was you.

© Dave Barsby, May,1999
dave@barsby.force9.co.uk

UNTIL THE END OF TIME

I long to send you words of love
To try and show the way I feel
But how could simple words show you
My own true self to reveal
This ache within my heart
A passion that yearns to be free
Has imprisoned my very soul
To which your love holds the key
For all around seems darkness
Too many endless lonely nights
But with your soft voice to guide me
In my world would be warmth and light
So release me from this torment
Remove all doubts from my mind
And forever I will be near you
From now until the end of time.

© Dave Barsby, 1999
dave@barsby.force9.co.uk

BEGUILED

Beguiled by such soulful gaze
All thoughts of you fill my mind
Finding passion once buried so deep
Your love round my heart is entwined
As quietly you creep into my dreams
Like a spirit, not seen or heard
That haunts my innermost desires
With every soft sensual word
But whenever my sleep is troubled
At the brink of some dark abyss
Like an Angel of Light you protect me
Restoring all hope with your kiss
So transport me now to your heaven
Break this spell and set me free
And my nights shall never be lonely
For with you is my true destiny.

PRECIOUS TIME

Daylight dims and melts into night
Gentle thoughts from far away
Morpheus reigns in gloomy twilight
Bids farewell to lonely day
Restless desires in this slumber
Wanting to share just one kiss
Hold you near with embrace so tender
Spend a night of passionate bliss
With warm love all around
If in your arms I could lie
Listening to an Angels voice
Singing a soft sweet lullaby
For nothing is more precious
Than the time you share with me
As in my dreams you ever are
And in my heart for all eternity
