Pokémon Breeding

Sex isn't just for Nidoran any more! In Gold and Silver, most Pokémon have gender, indicated by the "Mars" (male) or "Venus" (female) symbols next to their names. You need to take your Pokémon to the Day Care Center on Route 34 to breed them. When a male and a female of the same species spend some time together in the Day Care (and provided they get along…) an egg will be laid.

To figure out whether two Pokémon are compatible, talk to Pokémon after you have given them to the Day Care Center. If you receive one of the following three messages after the sentence "It's Pokémon A that was left with the Day-Care Man/Lady," the pairing will result in an egg:

It's friendly with Pokémon B.
It appears to care for Pokémon B.
It shows interest in Pokémon B.
Note that you don’t necessarily need two Pokémon of exactly the same species; sometimes a similar Pokemon will be able to stand in (try matching their types), and the miraculous Ditto can use its shape-changing ability to mate with pretty much any Pokemon.

A Pokémon egg will hatch if you carry it around with you for a while (it takes up a slot in your Pokémon team). In most cases, the egg hatches into a low-level specimen of the lowest evolution of that Pokémon. (For example, mating two Ampharos will result in a new Mareep, not another Ampharos or Flaaffy). Some Pokémon, such as Pikachu, Clefairy and Jigglypuff, have new "baby" forms that can only be found by breeding. If you're looking to breed one of the baby forms, make sure that the female is of the right species, and you should be able to succeed (ie: for Pichu, the mother needs to be a Pikachu).

Here are some basic match-ups that lead to interesting breeding results:

Breed two Pikachus to get Pichu.
Breed two Electabuzzes and you get Elekid.
Breed two Clefairies and you get Cleffa.
Breed two Jigglypuffs and you get Igglybuff.
Breed two Magmars and you get Magby.
Breed a Venonat with a Pinsir to get Pinsir.
Breed a Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee with a Ditto to get Tyrogue.
Breed a Clefairy with a Snubbull to get another Snubbull.
Breed a Marill with a Jigglypff to get Igglypuff.
Breed a Gyarados with the Red Gyarados to get a shiny Magikarp.
