What are the Gold/Silver versions?
Gold and Silver are the two new versions of pokémon which have hit stores in Japan and will be coming to US shores shortly after translation. They can be refered to as "Pokémon 2", although they will not be titled so.
The Gold and Silver versions of pokémon will be completely different than any other pokémon version before their time. Just like red and blue, these two versions will be almost the same but with slightly different changes in each (different pokémon sets, etc.). Gold and Silver will also contain completely new pokémon. 100 new ones, to be exact. Pokémon can now have more than one evolution per stage (i.e two stage 1 evolutions), and there are pre-evolutions of pokémon such as pikachu, clefairy, and jigglypuff. They're super cute!

What is specifically different about the new games?
In G & S there are male and female Pokemon, meaning, you can breed them! It's not certain right now, but EGM magazine says, "...it's thought that you'll be able to breed your Pokémon to produce an egg. What the egg hatches into will be determined by the stats of the monsters you mated..." You can also find hidden nuts and fruits in the overworld inside plants. Using these items you can replenish a Pokémon's life. And to make it easier to store items, you chracter has a backpack. The backpack has many pockets, allowing you to organize yourself. The backpack stores items in categories, such as, Pokeball's, Regular Item and so on. There will also be a slew of new trainers. In addtion to THAT, there will be all sorts of new PokéGear, as its called. The new gear keeps track of time, acts as a cell phone, radio and more! And you will be getting a brand new Pokedex, complete with all the info you're gonna need when you spot or capture a new Pokemon!

Game Play
The game play is, of course, completely different. Ash is gone, Misty is gone, Brock, Giovanni... all the regulars (that weren't pokémon) are gone. Everything is new. There are eight different Gym Leaders, all named after plants or flowers. Hayato, Tsukushi, Akane, Matsuba, Shijima, Mikan, Yanagi and Ibuki. There are some nice pictures of this game running, so you'll have to see for yourself. The fact that this is a Game Boy *Color* compatible game only helps this game prosper!
