| Up to 12 Player Madness! |
The multiplayer mode in GoldenEye was definitely its biggest achievement, and it is still enjoyed by all almost two and a half years later. And Perfect Dark's multiplayer is on its way to being even better!
Bots / Simulants
If you don't already know, "Bots" are computer-controlled players that move and react much like human players. Rare is introducing bots into the multiplayer game, and it has been said that they are very intelligent players that fight strategically and are just as challenging as human opponents. Up to twelve players will be able to play in the multiplayer mode at a time, whether they are human or computer controlled. Which means you could play by yourself against eleven bots, or you could play with three other friends against nine computer-controlled opponents. There are 12 types of bots include with some of them having to be unlocked before you can use them.
They are:
Normalsim Nothing special just runs, shoots, dies everything a human does.
Pacifistsim All this sim does is run and find all the guns in the level and casually fires a bullet.
Vendettasim He randomly picks and enemy and hunts them down until there limp body falls to the
floor.
Cowardsim Never fights, just runs and hides. Perfect for a "Save the President" game.
Revengesim Very scary. If you kill him prepare to run, fast. He is blood thirsty for revenge.
Kamikazesim Bottom line: dont give him explosives. The pyro of all pyros will kill you in point blank
range with a rocket, bringing him down with you.
Predatorsim With him on dark difficulty you will only see red through the whole game. A powerful
sim who never strays from his shields.
Fistsim Wanna simulate a bar fight? Fists are his one and only weapon.
Shieldsim Always shielded and if thats not band enough he has extra health.
Turtlesim Hes very slow and hides a lot. Shields keep him alive in the heat of a battle.
Cheetasim Incredibly fast. Youll see him dodging bullets like a breeze.
Rocketsim This sim craves rockets and always has a rocket launcher in hand.
The bots also have five difficulties:
Meat Free kills basically.
Easy Easy to kill.
Normal Normal difficulty.
Perfect Some what of a challenge.
Dark Head shots all the time, fast, you name it and their good at it.
In addition to bots, Rare is introducing "Simulants" to the mission mode, which are similar to standard bots, except they play on your team. Check out the co-op page.
Multiplayer Levels
Three classic levels from GoldenEye will make up a choice of nineteen levels in Perfect Dark's multiplayer game. Fully revamped versions of the Facility, Complex and Temple will be making a return. Although it seems a little unfortunate that we'll be getting three levels again that we've already been playing for almost three years, their improved versions with different textures and lighting effects will certainly be very impressive. Not only that, the ability to fall off ledges has been incorporated into various areas of each level.
Thanks to our favorite PD site, PDark, we have exclusive information about five of the multiplayer levels in PD. The staff at PDark were lucky enough to visit the ECTS show in London, and have donated us their first hand accounts of each of the six playable levels in the demo version of PD. Full credit goes to PDark for this info from their site:
At ECTS there were six multiplayer levels in all, split up into two categories, Perfect and Golden. The Golden levels were those carried forth from GoldenEye, whilst the Perfect levels were new to the game:
Perfect
-Pipes
-Ravine
-Skedar
-GS Building
Golden
-Temple
-Complex
-Facility
Pipes
Theres a good reason why Pipes is so called - its got a floor full of pipes, surprisingly. The level comprises of two levels, pipes and nothingness being the bottom level, with a ladder up from the pipes to a normal floored level. Personally, I was very unimpressed with the level simply because you could fall of the pipes to certain death, totally ruining the game play. Its a shame, otherwise it looks like it would be a good level, and with many corners in which you could imagine having a long-lasting shoot-out. I expect that Rare will in some way change the way you can fall to your death, perhaps by introducing walls or something along those lines.
Ravine
There are several places on the ravine in which you can fall from one level to another but also fall to your death. Theres a moving platform on the level which acts in the same way to a lift, and also several walkways and passages. There's a horrible yellowy-redness to the level and the textures I though made it look ugly. Still, lots of scope for multiplayer madness here.
Skedar
Skedar, I believe, is a type of alien in the game, and so hence the level name. Theres snow throughout the level, as well as big black "thingys" and other bits and bobs. Not very helpful, I know, but I didnt play this one for very long. On to the next...
GS Building
The GS Building is a level similar in feel to Complex with yellow walls instead of grey ones. There are a couple of places where you can fall to your death, one of which being along a fairly narrow beam connecting two halves of the building. Some excellent positions for snipers, one of which overlooks the aforementioned beam. Id say this would probably become most peoples favorite multiplayer level, but there could be better ones still unreleased by Rare.
Temple
The temple makes a reappearance in Perfect Dark with some slight (and not so slight) alterations to it. Seeing as you can now fall through gaps, it will be no surprise to you that the central cavity can be used to reach the lower level. However, there are other perhaps more important changes too. In the large room on the lower level, next to the alley with the body armor in it in GoldenEye, you will now find several pillars not too dissimilar to those in the Egyptian level. The lighting is also different, and in the huge room on the top level it is only really possible to see even half way across by firing to illuminate the room. The colors and patterns have also changed, and youll no longer find the body armor in the same place (due to the way you can select the weapons in the game).
Complex
My favorite GoldenEye multiplayer level also makes a return, again with some changes. The metal screens behind which you could hide in GoldenEye have disappeared completely; meaning that if you do hide in the same small gaps then other players can easily see you. Also, below the winding slope upwards where before it was possible only to get access to by coming from one of the two rooms with the vents, has now become accessible from the other side as well - i.e. the grating in front has been taken away, and a path has been added over what in GoldenEye was nothingness. Colors are also slightly different, this time Rare has chosen a yellowy-brown.
Facility
One of the most popular Goldeneye levels is new and improved with more colors and the ground seems to resemble blue carpet. The level will be much bigger now considering half of it wasnt accessible in Goldeneye (unless you have a Game Shark). Also the glitch to get up in the vent again probably wont return in PD considering it was a safe hideout for campers.
Multiplayer Options
On the main options screen the options are:
Level Select level for death match.
Game
King of the Hill Everyone scrambles to take control of a certain part of the map.
Capture the Flag You try to secure your own teams flag while attempting to steal the enemys.
Pop A Cap The players take turns being the "chosen one" whom everyone else has to blow away.
Normal Normal deathmatch.
Hold the Briefcase Similar to Goldeneyes Flag Tag, players who find and carry the briefcase for 30 seconds wins a point
Hacker Central Players must find a data link and then head for the terminal and wait for 20 seconds to activate it.
Limits Customize time and score. The time can go from one minute to 22 minutes and the scores start at one kill and can be set to 45 kills max. You can combine to two to make it 10 min. and 10 kills, the game ends whichever comes first.
Weapons Customize what weapons appear and how often. Six slots to use, one meaning the weapon in that slot appears all the time and everywhere. Six being the opposite of one. If you only put four weapons in four slots then you play with only four weapons. If you want to include shields in the deathmatch you have to use a slot. There are also pre-made weapon sets like the Carrington set that contains the Falcon 2, Laptop Gun, Crossbow, AR34 and shield. Some weapons you might have to unlock them first before you can use them in multiplayer. There are about 44+ weapons available in Perfect Dark.
Teams Team settings were you can input how many bots/players are on your team and your team color.
Simulats How many bots are playing, what type of bots (Rocketsim, Fistsim, etc.), and what difficulty (meat, easy, etc.).

With all the customization in PD you can invent your own scenarios. Here are a few from EGM.
Save the President
Setup: Choose a Cowardsim, give him the body of the president who appears in the one player game and put him on your team of four human/bot players. Then choose three or four Kamikaze sims and make them the opposing team, or vice versa.
The game: Continue to stop the opposing team so they dont kill your president. Or if you are the opposing team kill the president!
Farsighted
Setup: Stick the FarSight XR-20 in slot number one, so it spawns nearly everywhere, then choose a large level filled with small rooms. Build a team of three simulants to battle your group of human players. Throw whatever other guns you like into the vacant weapon slots.
The game: As soon as the game starts, all the human players need to grab FarSights and meet up in one of the levels rooms (you should agree on a meeting room before you kick off the scenario). Then, standing back-to-back, everyone needs to pick off the simulant enemies from afar, with the FarSight, before the sims find your teams room and slaughter the lot of you with their close-range weapons.
You can send in your own scenarios to Marboy123@aol.com and I will post them on the site!
