IS fear making us fat ?
Whilst the whole world is dieting more than ever before, people continue to become overweight, cites experts in the States. These experts suggest that the Government looks again at dietary guidelines, namely "The Food Pyramid". Apparently, the latest edition recommends that we eat 11 servings of carbohydrates a day which equates to 11 slices of bread! Stuart Trager, a clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery states "we need to get away from the fat phobia".

Edith Maskell of BHM agrees. "We have become a nation obsessive about fat free food. Remember, when manufacturers remove fat from their foods, they add sugar back in. Hence we get fat whilst we think we’re doing all the right things in order to lose weight, but don’t. It’s crazy".

Can a spoonful of Cinnamon treat Diabetes
A Study carried out by Richard A Anderson of the Beltesville Human Nutrition Research Centre, in Maryland, concludes that by adding just one quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon to a morning cup of tea, may have the ability to lower blood sugar, fats and cholesterol levels in Type II Diabetes. He goes further to state that this simple addition to your daily life, may even stave off the onset of Type II Diabetes in people at risk.

In the study, 60 people took 1gram a day and ALL experienced a drop in blood levels of glucose, fats and cholesterol by up to 30% whilst no change was seen in those people taking a placebo. Anderson explained that cinnamon contains compounds that make insulin more efficient, improving the hormone’s ability to bring glucose to the cells that need it. It has also been shown in previous studies that cinnamon appears to help fat cells recognise and respond to insulin and in test tube animal studies

Laugh and your brain will reward you
They say that laughter is the best medicine and a new study explains how laughter makes us feel good. Dr Allan L Reiss of Stanford University in California research how humour activates brain networks that are involved in "rewards". Dr Reiss stated that "humour often dictates how and with whom we establish friendships and even long term romantic relationships. It is a universal coping mechanism for dealing with stress".

He also stated that the loss of ability to appreciate humour is a common symptom of depression. He also stated that the "research may help to explain why humourless people sometimes have serious problems in relationships". So it’s true – laugh and the world laughs with you – cry and you cry alone.

Is the colour of your car the safest on the road ?
New Zealand scientists have announced that silver coloured cars are less likely to be involved in accidents which cause serious injuries. Apparently, about 3000 people are injured around the world every day but research found that the risk of being injured in a silver car was less than in cars of other colours. The article did go on to say which cars had the highest risk but I won’t depress you – except to say that "unlucky" green was on the list!

Hypnotherapy - The Proof

According to one of America's leading psychiatrists, hypnotherapy does work. It's official. David Spielberg, from Stanford University, has announced to the American Association for the Advancement of Science that he had scanned the brains of some hypnotised volunteers who were told they were looking at coloured objects when in fact they were black and white.

The scientific evidence demonstrates a scan showing areas of the brain used to register colour which is highlighted by increased blood flow. It indicates the subjects genuinely saw colour, which was not actually there. He also said that due to this study there were 'tremendous medical implications and envisaged people being able to manage their own pain and anxiety'.

Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer first used hypnotherapy 200 years ago in Vienna. He was highly successful but was eventually driven from the city accused of faking the practise and trying to fool the people.

Societies the world over know the benefits of meditation, relaxation techniques and hypnotherapy, so perhaps now this scientific proof will allow the practise to take its rightful place in the medical profession.

To Sleep, Or Not to Sleep
New research published last month questioned the traditional wisdom of getting 7-8 hours sleep a night.

The study at the University of California looked at the sleeping patterns and death rates of over 1 million adults in their 50's over a six year period. Researchers found that the ideal amount of sleep is between six and seven hours a night and those that needed 8 hours were 12% more likely to die over this six year period than people who slept just 7 hours.

Meanwhile, separate research conducted in Quebec, Canada found that the condition sleep apnoea, which causes disrupted sleep patterns could affect mental as well as physical health. It could affect as much as 25% of the population and causes breathing to stop regularly during sleep. In severe cases, breathing can be disrupted more than ten times an hour, disrupting sleep patterns. This causes problems during the day due to exhaustion and could even lead to depression and increased risk from heart attack and strokes.

Edith Maskell of Bromley Health Management commented; "The worrying thing about the Californian study is that it's going to frighten people into setting their alarm clocks earlier, or worrying about the amount of sleep they're getting, which isn't going to make them less tired and isn't conducive to a good night's rest".

"Sleep is a good indicator of general health. While, in my opinion, sleeping longer in itself isn't a health risk, if your sleep is disrupted or you're so tired you need extra sleep, that would suggest there's something else wrong in the body, or that you're stressed or depressed. If you don't deal with the root causes of sleep problems, then they will have an effect on your health in the long run. Most importantly, don't rely on sleeping tablets - that's a short-term fix at best. To get a good night's sleep, you need to be relaxed and healthy".

"If you're concerned about your health, see a specialist".

So as the evidence suggests, sleep is very important to the daily function of life and mental well-being, but don't get too much....

ADHD - Why Classroom Behaviour Doesn't Always Lead to Success in LifeBack
Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a term which has come in to use fairly recently to describe behavioural problems in children, but scientists in the United States now believe the condition may have genetic roots going back 10-40,000 years. Furthermore, the genetic variation that causes such behavioural problems may have benefited our ancestors in the evolutionary process.

The terms ADHD and ADD have come into common use since the 1960's. Symptoms range from short attention spans and liveliness to carelessness and aggression. It is classed as a learning disability and is estimated to affect between 5% and 20% of pre-school children. Orthodox treatment typically involves prescribing the drug Ritalin, while a more holistic approach might consider emotional factors, nutrition and even allergies. Even so, contemporary specialists now view the condition not so much as an affliction as a unique set of learning and developmental needs.

Many of us know individuals who, dismissed as "troublemakers" or "no-hopers" during early education went on to remarkable success later in life. UK entrepreneur Richard Branson was famously told by his headmaster on leaving school, "Branson, I predict you will either go to prison, or become a millionaire".

The report by scientists at the University of California identifies a gene (DRD4) responsible for the characteristics associated with ADHD and behavioural problems. Researchers claim the gene variation causes a "novelty-seeking" personality trait, which may have given early humans an advantage in mating and reproduction. However, whilst this entrepreneurial flair may be beneficial to our life-long success, it is not so compatible in an institutional setting or where socially expected behaviours are rigid.

"We speculate that the very traits that may be advantageous for individuals possessing this variant gene may predispose behaviours that are deemed inappropriate in the typical classroom setting, " commented Dr Robert K. Moyzis, leading the study.

"If so, then for some ADHD individuals, alternative methods of education may be more useful than medication".

So remember, should your child ever be sent home from school for misbehaving; maybe, just maybe there's a budding entrepreneur inside them just waiting to get out...

Importance of Vitamins Reviewed
A review by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health concludes that most people would benefit from a multivitamin supplement. According to their findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine "Substantial data suggest that higher intakes of folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and vitamin D will benefit many people, and a multivitamin will ensure an adequate intake of other vitamins".

Vitamin supplementation is particularly recommended for women of child-bearing age, the elderly, anyone whose diet does not include a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables and anyone who drinks more than two alcoholic beverages a day.

Edith Maskell of Bromley Health Management commented, "Quite importantly, this study recognizes that the right diet on it's own is not always enough. At different stages in our lives, our bodies require different levels of vitamins and nutrients. Eating lots of fruit and vegetables may not be enough if the body isn't absorbing vitamins from the food as well as it should. Smoking, drinking, stress and all sorts of other lifestyle factors all make a difference as well".

"Vitamin and mineral levels are so important to overall health that, at Bromley Health Management, we will often include a vitamin and mineral screening in our treatment programmes".

Did you know........
If your hair is gray or white, you could be lacking copper. Check with a knowledgeable person at a health food store as to what kind of copper (copper sebacate) and how much to take. If you take too much, you can get into trouble, such as upsetting your zinc balance

For weeds in the cracks of sidewalks, mix vinegar and salt, any amount in a spray bottle.

Crawling insects hate cloves, bay leaves and sage. They will not cross a line of baby powder or a mixture of 3/4 "20 Mule Team Borax" and 1/4 "powdered sugar".

Flying insects hate basil. Keep a basil plant in each room, and keep it watered well to increase the scent. Sprinkle dry basil in cracks or areas where flying insects get in, or put a small amount in a small piece of muslin material or old pantyhose, tie it closed, and hang it in areas where you see flying insects. Works on porches too. If flying insects walk in dried basil, they begin slowing down and a few hours later they are dead.

Mice hate peppermint. Grow mint plants around your house. Place a piece of cotton soaked in peppermint oil in areas where mice might be getting in.

Fleas hate lavender. Sprinkle a few drops in your pet's area. Make a flea collar for your dog with a Velcro closure, placing in it 1/2 dried rosemary and 1/2 dried oregano.

Potatoes and carrots are difficult to digest raw. It is better to cook them. Carrots lose almost no vitamin A in cooking.

Keep vitamin E gel caps, any size, in your kitchen. When a burn occurs, puncture a gel cap and immediately cover the burned area with vitamin E, after flushing first with cold water.

Magnesium relieves headaches and helps fibromyagia as well as restless leg syndrome

Additives called sulfites can be harmful. The ones to be aware of are: sodium sulfite, sulfur dioxide, potassium metabisulfite, potassium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfite. I read the labels of everything I purchase and limit additives as often as I can.

Beta-carotene assists the body to produce vitamin A.
