Asthma is a lung condition that causes wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. It is caused by inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the airways in your lungs. Asthma is a chronic condition, which means you will probably have it the rest of your life. You may start coughing or wheezing when you breathe in irritants or something you are allergic to.
Cold air, viruses, and tobacco smoke are possible irritants. Examples of things you might be allergic to are dust, pollen, molds, and animal dander. Some people have coughing or wheezing only during exercise. This is called exercise-induced asthma.
Asthma may be mild, moderate, or severe. An asthma attack may last a few minutes or for days. Attacks can happen anywhere and at any time. Severe asthma attacks can be fatal. It is very important to get treatment for asthma so you can live a healthy, active life.

Help for asthmatics
Always have regular check ups with your doctor or asthma nurse, have an action plan of what to do as your asthma gets worse. If you're not happy ask to be referred to a chest specialist.
Ask for a peak flow meter to keep at home... this will show if your asthma is getting worse and you need to increase your medication
Ask for an Aero chamber... it helps get the salbutamol directly into your lungs if you can't breathe properly instead of blowing it out.
REMEMBER-salbutamol is only a reliever ! your preventative you must take religiously , it deals with the inflamation ! (ask for more details from your doctors surgery if you don't understand ,as it is very important !)
Watch out for food or environment allergies which can trigger an attack.
Keep a food diary and asthma diary to see if anything you are eating is making it worse, have an allergy test, anything that helps is going to improve your quality of life !

Is asthma caused through fear ? are we asthmatics overbreathing and making things worse? the following website looks at stress and an alternative reason for asthma (please read with an open mind) Mindiskey
Asthma symptoms can be made worse if you are emotional, upset, stress, frustration or anger. A good way of helping yourself is to learn how to deal better with your emotional state.
**The research on the use of hypnosis for asthma is quite extensive and produced superior results compared with breathing exercises aimed at relaxation. It also showed that those patients committed to the use of self-hypnosis improved the most.
If you are bringing up a child with asthma teach them how to express themselves and to seek help quickly for any problems they have while growing up. A build up of stress and emotional baggage will affect their asthma.
