| TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CAROLS |
 |
 |

BY KATHY B. TURLA
In the City of San Fernando, the Christmas capital of
the Philippines, stands the Paskuhan Village where
Christmas is celebrated all throughout the year!
There, displayed during the Christmas season are giant
"parol" or Christmas lanterns - the largest probably in
whole wide world - contributed by all its
barrios to a contest done every year since the early
nineteen hundreds. These glittering lanterns are bright,
multi-colored and of different light-patterns and are
a joy to watch especially during night time! And
Christmas music is non-stop too!
Herewith are some of the traditional carols that
people sing there all throughout the year:

SILENT NIGHT
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
'Round yon Virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Joseph Mohr, 1792 - 1849
John Young, 1820 - 1885
Music: Franz Gruber 1787 - 1863

OH COME ALL YE FAITHFUL
Oh come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
Oh come ye, oh come ye
To Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him
Born the King of angels.
Oh come let us adore him,
Oh come let us adore him,
Oh come let us adore him,
Christ the Lord!
John Wade 1711 - 1786

HARK THE HERALD ANGEL SING
Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem,
Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.
Lyrics: Charles Wesley, 1707 - 1788
Music: Felix Mendelsohn 1809 - 1847

JOY TO THE WORLD
Joy to the world the Lord has come!
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart, prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and heaven and nature sing!
Joy to the earth the Saviour reigns!
Let men their songs employ!
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy!
George Handel, 1685 - 1759

O HOLY NIGHT
O Holy Night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
'Til He appeared and the soul felt
its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and
glorous morn.
Fall on your knees,
O hear the angels voices.
O night divine, O night when Christ as born
O night divine, O night,
O night divine.

WHISPERING HOPE
Soft as the voice of an Angel
Breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word
Wait, till the darkness is over
Wait, till the tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow
After the shower is gone
Whispering hope (whispering hope)
Oh, how welcome thy voice
Making my heart (making my heart)
In it´s sorrow rejoice
If in the dusk of the twilight
Dim be the region afar
Will not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star
Then, when the night is upon us
Why should the heart sink away
When the dark midnight is over
Watch for the breaking of day

Whispering hope (whispering hope)
Oh, how welcome thy voice
Making my heart (making my heart)
In it´s sorrow rejoice

THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY

Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the kIng
Pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him
Pa rum pum pum pum
When we come
Little baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King
Pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you
Pa rum pum pum pum
On my drum
Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him
Pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum

THE FIRST NOEL
The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter night that was so deep!
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
English traditional carol, 17th century

SILVER BELLS
Refrain:
Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day
See the sidewalk, busy sidewalk
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear
Repeat refrain

JINGLE BELLS
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way!
Bells on bob tail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Hey, Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh,
Hey, Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh!

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN
Refrain:
You better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, I'm telling you why:
Santa Claus is coming to town!
He's making a list and checking it twice
He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice,
Santa Claus is coming to town!
He sees you when you're sleeping,
He knows when you're awake
He knows it you've been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake
Repeat refrain

RUDOLPH, THE RED-NOSED REINDEER
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say, "it glows"
All of the other reindeer
Use to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer game.
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say
"Rudolph with your nose so bright
Will you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then how the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with glee,
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!"

FROSTY, THE SNOWMAN
Frosty, the snowman
Was a jolly happy soul
With a corn cob pipe
And a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty, the snowman
Was a fairy tale they say
He was made of snow
But the children know
How he came to life one day.
Refrain:
There must have been some magic in
That old silk hat they found
For when they place it on his head
He began to dance around.
Oh! Frosty, the snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children said
He could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me.
