Lesson: the Tagalog "ay" and Kapampangan "e"
One way to differentiate Kapampangan from Tagalog or vice versa is to look at
the endings of certain words. For instance, many Tagalog words end in "ay", its
counterpart in Kapampangan of which is "e".
The following words are examples of such:
Tagalog - Kapampangan
dalisay - dalise
tibay - tibe
suklay - sukle
maingay - mainge
ingay - inge
tunay - tune
sigay - sige
panay - pane
sanay - sane
sakay - sake
kilay - kile
pilay - pile
palagay - palage
libay - libe
bagay - bage
palay - pale
kulay - kule
malay - male
damay - dame
lagay - lage
pamaypay - pamepe
bitay - bite
anay - ane
CAUTION!
The following, are exceptions, and are wrong:
patay - pate
sabay - sabe
may - me
tatay - tate
kamay - kame
bahay - bahe
tulay - tule
nanay - nane
Nor are the following right:
yugsay - yugse
salay - sale
lelay - lele
dasay - dase
kaway - kawe
laway - lawe
(Note: if you discover more words similar to these, please send them to me. Thanks.)
From Rolly de Jesus:
Correct: Wrong:
atay-ate askay-aske
bangkay-bangke angay-ange
gulay-gule asway-aswe
gamay-game abay-abe
galamay-galame alay-ale?
katay-kate? dinay-dine/rine
lamay-lame kusay-kuse
latay-late luay-lue/luwe
lusay-luse
ibay-ibe
pasay-pase
kulatay?-kulate
**************************
bantay - bante
What about:
tinapay-tinape
walay-wale
Balamu pu ing sabay/sabe correct ya, uling patye magkanta tamu,
sasabyan tamu--sabe-sabe tamung magkanta.
At ing tulay/tule..daramdaman ke rin ing tule as an another word for
tete.
There seems to be a pattern also in tagalog/Kapampangan -aw/-o.
As in:
sabaw/sabo
langaw/lango
silaw/silo
aldaw (araw)/aldo
singaw/singo
Exemptions:
lugaw/lugo
kalabaw/kalabo
ilaw/ilo
Itana pa,
Alex
