MY COFFEE

I like to drink my morning coffee
From my big ceramic mug
It's like a welcome greeting
As warming as a hug

To smell the sweet aroma
Of the beans as they perk
Starts my day off on the right foot
Before I have to go to work

I like to hear the bacon sizzling
In that big black frying pan
Or see the plate of muffins
Oozing with butter and fresh jam

Of course,I'd rather doze a bit
I don't like getting up
But it always makes it easier
When I know there's Folgers in my cup

HAMBURGER HELPER

A fixer upper we finally bought
An older van, from a used car lot
Furniture from a rummage sale
Day old bread, but it's not stale
Who says we don't have much?
We don't need diamonds and such...
HAMBURGER HELPER goes good with love!

We cut our hair, right here at home
Go to the corner to use the phone
A walk in the park is our night out
But of this,I have no doubt
We have trust in God above
And HAMBURGER HELPER goes good with love!

Take your diamonds and fancy cars
Expensive wines and fat cigars
Long vacations and big old yachts
I'll take just what I've got...
An older house and a teeny yard
A man who loves me and works hard
To buy me HAMBURGER HELPER to go with our love!

WHO KNOWS?

Who knows how long I'll be here
when deaths darkness lingers at my door
Who knows how much longer I'll breathe life
be it two, three years or four
Who knows what comes tomorrow
or what the next week brings
while I'm here on earth
let me see good in everything.....

THE CORNER BAR

There's a place on the corner
and it's called 'The Bar'
It's warm and cozy
and it's not very far

they have long necked bottles
and long legged girls
guys tell bawdy jokes
that can make your hair curl

talking about football,baseball
huntin' and fishin'
love gone wrong
that can start you wishin'

you can stop after work
to cash your check
meet up with your buddies
or play pool, by heck

the bartender always
greets you by name
makes you feel welcome
and glad you came

sometimes there's music
with a real live band
get there early
or you'll have to stand

in my little book
it gets 5 gold stars
that place on the corner
they call 'The Bar'

JUST HOLD ME

Hold me in your arms tonight
I need someone
To hold me tight
Hold me and caress my cheek
No need to talk
No need to speak
Hold me oh so gently
And whisper in my ear
That you'll be here tomorrow
That you'll be here next year
Just tell me that you love me
And that you really care
Let me know when I awake
I'll always find you there

PRAYER FOR A HOT SUMMER DAY

It's too hot to work
And too hot to play
It's been hot and muggy
Day after day

Heat and humidity
Continue to soar
Smacks you in the face
If you go out the door

Lawns are all scorched
Pavement has buckled and caved
Please make it rain
Make the heat go away

Nice flower gardens
Have withered and burned
We sit fanning ourselves
And for cooler weather we yearn

One thing I've learned
With this very hot spell
When I leave this earth
I don't wat to go to hell...

The following poem in memory of Sept. 11
[won grand prize award from MATURE magazine]

ASHES

RAINING ASHES...
ASHES...DEBRIS...
EVERYWHERE
BURNS MY EYES
CAN'T SEE
RUN....
RUN....
GET AWAY
FRENZY....
FALLING....
GET UP....
GET UP...GO ON...

RAINING GOODNESS
KINDNESS...TOLERANCE
EVERYWHERE
LIFTING MY SPIRITS
I SEE....
STAY....
STAY....
STAY AND CONTINUE
REBUILD...
RESTART...
STAY UP AMERICA...
STAY UP...GO ON...

THE DREAM

She was like a vision
Standing there
Wildflowers entwined
Among her hair

A shy smile
played across her lips
I could feel my heart
Doing giant flips

A come hither look
Was in her eyes
As the fog around her
Seemed to rise

I reached for her
For a quick embrace
There was nothing there
Like she was erased

I wished she would have
Lingered awhile
That lovely vision
Still makes me smile

I hope she comes again
Just to tease
The next time
I am catching Z's

WITH GODS HELP

With Gods help,we will
Make it through this day
With his help,we will
Continue to work and play
We'll take each day
An hour at a time
Live life to the fullest
And we should be just fine
We'll go about our business
And tend to all our chores
Be thankful for the good life
We experienced before
With Gods help,we'll laugh
And we'll also pray
With his help we'll make it
Through another day...

FARM LIFE

Oh to breathe the smell of my childhood days
Of clover fields and fresh mown hay
To see the glimmer of the setting sun
On the planted fields, that were just done

To hear the crow of the rooster in the early morn
Or piglets grunting for their corn
The tractor humming in the field
Children at play, with giggles and squeals

The berry pies set out to cool
The fresh baked bread to make you drool
Riding the hay wagon was so much fun
A treat no doubt, when work was done

Eggs had to be gathered each day
Before school or before play
Cows to be milked, cleaned and fed
At days end,we were ready for bed

But nothing quite can capture the charm
Of a childhood spent on a country farm.

SNOW

Some older folks don't like the snow
when they slip and slide
or when they have to shovel
'cuz it's piled in drifts outside

But I see snow as a brand new toy
with many ways to use it
I can take my new red sled
and down the hill I cruise it

I can ski or snowshoe
across the snowy land
or make a snowman in my yard
with pipe and scarf so grand

I can lay and make snow angels
with all the friends I know
or make a snow fort to protect me
when snowballs we do throw

Glide across frozen lakes
with my Dad on a snowmobile
or catch a snowflake on my tongue
what a pleasure I then feel

When weary Winter drags along
and sunny days are few
a gentle coating of new snow
makes everything look new

It clings to all the trees
and makes them picture pretty
the sparkly white changes everything
in the country and in the city

If I live to be one hundred
there's one thing I do know
my favorite words of all time, were
SCHOOL CLOSED BECAUSE OF SNOW

TAKE MY HAND AND HOLD IT

Take my hand and hold it
Although we're getting old
Take my hand and hold it
Protect it from the cold

Take my hand and hold it
As you join me in prayer
Take my hand and hold it
Let me know you'll always be there

Take my hand and hold it
'tho it's getting wrinkled and slow
Take my hand and hold it
Never,ever,let it go

Take my hand and hold it
As together we cross the street
Take my hand and hold it
As lifes challenges we meet

Take my hand and hold it
Even though it may seem square
Take my hand and hold it
Just to show me that you care....

[the above poem won a contest from BARNES & NOBLE]

YEP...IT'S LOVE

It's like OATMEAL...
sometimes gooey and soft
Like a HELIUM BALLOON
flying high aloft
like a ROLLER COASTER
with it's ups and downs
like a CIRCUS CLOWN
sometimes just fooling around
like a CAN OF POP
with bubbles and sizzle
like a RAINFALL
sometimes there's a drizzle
like FIREWORKS
on the fourth of July
like a SAD MOVIE
sometimes you cry
like a MERRY GO ROUND
it makes you feel dizzy
yep,it's LOVE
that gets you in a tizzy

REMEMBER WHEN...

REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT BAREFOOT
AS SUMMER RAINS FILLED THE DITCHES
NO ONE HAD AN INGROUND POOL
'CUZ WE HAD NO RICHES
WE FOLLOWED THE ICEMAN AROUND HIS ROUTE
FOR A PIECE OF ICE WE CONSIDERED A TREAT
OF COURSE THERE WERE NO CULVERS OR DQ'S
TO HELP US BEAT THE HEAT

NO TRAMPOLINES OR GYM SETS
IN THE BACKYARD TO SEE
BUT A STURDY ROPE WITH A BOARD SEAT
HANGING FROM THE TREE
WE SPENT SUMMERS PLAYING HOPSCOTCH
JUMP ROPE AND ANTE-ANTE OVER
OUR PETS WERE NAMED LASSIE,SHEP AND EVEN ROVER

WE SAVED STRING,ALUMINUM FOIL
AND PODS FROM THE WOODS
BOUGHT WAR BONDS AND VICTORY STAMPS
TO HELP OUR TROOPS,IF WE COULD
NO T.V.,COMPUTOR GAMES
OR DVD'S TO PLAY
WE HAD CARDS OR BOARD GAMES
AND ACTUALLY CONVERSED EACH DAY

REMEMBER WHEN WE WALKED TO SCHOOL
NO BUSSES TO OUR DOOR
NO DESIGNER CLOTHES FOR US
IT WAS HAND ME DOWNS WE WORE
NO HEADLINERS EVER CAME TO TOWN
TO THRILL US WITH THEIR ACTS
NO T.V. TO WATCH THEM ON
THAT,MY FRIEND IS FACT

OUR CARS HAD NO LOUD SPEAKERS
BLASTING HIP HOP IN THE AIR
IN THE EVENINGS YOU SAT ON THE PORCH
YOU COULD HEAR CRICKETS EVERYWHERE
WE CAN'T EVER GO BACK IN TIME
TO A MORE SIMPLE PLACE WE'VE BEEN
BUT WE HAVE WARM MEMORIES
AND WE CAN ALWAYS..REMEMBER WHEN

GRANT ME THIS..

GRANT ME THE WISDOM
TO FOLLOW THE RIGHT ROAD
THE VISION TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A PRINCE AND A TOAD
THE COURAGE TO STAND UP
FOR ALL THAT IS RIGHT
A LOVE THAT WILL LAST
FOR MORE THAN JUST ONE NIGHT
