Schengen Visas

Thais resident in the UK who only have a Thai passport need a visa to travel within Europe. Normally if they are married to a British citizen or a person legally living in the UK the Schengen visa is easy to obtain and free of charge at most embassies on production of the required documentation, which differs slightly between embassies. Most embassies require you to attend in person to apply and waiting times for an appointment can be several weeks at some embassies.

As from December 2008 the Schengen countries are:

Austria
Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Italy
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
The Netherlands (Holland

Application made at any one Embassy for a Schengen visa is valid for travel to any and all of the Schengen countries without the need for further applications to be made.

The rule is that you apply for a visa at the Embassy of the country which will be your main destination. If you do not have a main destination you should apply at the Embassy of the first country you will enter.

Please note that the UK and Ireland are not Schengen countries.

Instead of a Schengen visa you can apply for a tourist visa if you are visiting just one country. If you are married to an EU national you can apply for an EEA Family Permit if you are travelling together.
