PBS Tier 5 Young Temporary Workers

The following information is about the UK's new points based system, which has not been fully implemented yet. It is possible that information may change shortly.

Tier 5 Visas

On 27th November 2008 the UK introduced Tier 5 visas for young temporary workers as part of the new points based system.

Young people eager to experience life in the United Kingdom and those who need to work for short periods of time in the country will be able to apply for a Tier 5 visa. This scheme allows young people from only some countries with which the UK has agreements to live and work in the UK for a maximum of two years. The participating countries are Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

Youth Mobility Workers

This tier encompasses the old rules involving youth mobility workers who are people allowed to work in the UK for a temporary period of time for example working holidaymakers or temporary exchange workers.

If an individual wishes to come to the UK under a Tier 5 visa they will need to be:

• a citizen of a participating country; or
• a British overseas citizen; or
• a British overseas territory citizen; or
• a British national (overseas)

They will also need to be sponsored by their government if they are not a British overseas citizen, British overseas territory citizen, or a British national (overseas).
As a worker in the UK under Tier 5 they will not be allowed to switch out of this tier into another tier.

Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age and have sufficient funds to support themselves when they first arrive in the UK until they start employment.

Individuals are not eligible to come to the UK under Tier 5 if they have dependent children or have previously been to the UK as a working holidaymaker.

Tier 5 replaces the following schemes:

• au pair scheme
• British Universities North America Club scheme
• Gap year entrants
• Japan Youth Exchange
• Research assistants to Members of Parliament
• Working Holiday Makers scheme

For people already in the UK in one of the above categories transitional arrangements have been made.

Please note that by 5th May 2009 the quota for Japanese nationals had been reached for 2009. Applications can be made next in January 2010.
