Welcome to the OnlineNation project!

Where do you start?

It might help to think of yourself (and the others) as shipwrecked colonists on some strange new shore or planet.

All of your material possessions from your previous lives are lost-you only have your skills and knowledge to work with now. You need to "build" your new nation using these assets plus whatever local resources you can find. The goal will be to survive and prosper!

You will find very quickly that John and I will be taking a background role in all of this. You'll need to collectively chart your own course, explore the resources available to you on the Delphi/Customforum server, make your own decisions and build your own destiny as a nation. Our role will mainly to help you get going.

There are several things you will need to do as a group right away.

Probably the first thing you will need to do is introduce yourselves to each other and find out what skills and knowledge each has to offer in the building of your new nation. You will also want to start developing friendships and other human relationships with each other. (Hopefully these may last for years to come!) You can do this in the forum provided. Introducing yourself should be your first act.

Another very high priority would probably be for you, as a group, to decide how you are going to make decisions as a group. Sometimes this is referred to as "government"! ;-) You might, for example, agree to randomly select someone as an interim official to facilitate this process. Eventually you will need to decide whether your government will be a democracy, a monarchy or even a dictatorship. You might even be able to develop some entirely new style of government that the world has not seen before! The important thing is that you need some sort of orderly mechanism for making collaborative decisions and serving the needs of the group.

Once you have developed a decision-making mechanism your next big decision might be how you, as a group, want to participate in this project. You might, for example, wish to approach this as "simulation" in which you each play a part which result in a hypothetical "country". Or, you could decide to actually persue some form of bona fide statehood, seeking actual diplomatic recognition from other "micro nations" such as the Kingdom of Talossa has done.

There will be many other decisions!

What you will call your new country?

How will you decide who the leaders of your country will be? You will need politicians to make policies, and executive branch to implement them, police to maintain the "peace" and so on. One very important leader that you will need to choose fairly soon is your system operator or "Sysop". This person will need advanced technical and artistic skills in maintaining the nation's public and internal web pages, etc.

What about immigration? No doubt the activity levels of many of the people you see here now will fade as they lose interest. Some will eventually disappear altogether. As Delphi limits your "population" to no more than 100 people at a time, what process or system would you need to develop to assure that citizenship "slots" are always filled with active, constructive members?

You may find that to keep your country sufficiently inhabited you will need to promote "immigration". (Note: any new immigrants must go through the same application process you did. Refer them to http://maxpages.com/onlinenation to submit their application. Also please note that Delphi imposes a limit of 100 people for this.)

As you learn to work together, develop lasting relationships and gradually begin to build your new nation, a never-ending stream of other decisions and issues will need to be made and resolved. Various projects and systems must be developed to implement them. The more you talk back and forth and get to know each other and discover what resources are available to you, the more enjoyable this whole process should become. You are in charge of your own destinies! You are nation builders!

We hope you will have a lot of fun with this as well as find it to be a rich and rewarding learning experience.

Best wishes and Good Luck!
