LEVELS OF PROGRESS
Path of the Panther
Beginner level
Once you have attained a white belt you will enter into the first level of training. The panther is the symbol of the knowledge we need to gain as a foundation for our training. In training as a panther you will learn to build strength, speed, control, and body movement skills. The path of the panther will give you all your basic information and a foundation for a complete understanding of the system.
Time of the Dragon
Intermediate level
After passing your blue belt test you enter into the second level of training. The dragon is the symbol of your creativity and imagination. As a dragon you will learn to develop your own movements based on your personal strengths and weaknesses. You will already have an understanding of the basics and it will now be time to learn to integrate all your knowledge.
Flight of the Eagle
Advanced level
Once you have made it to red belt you are now ready for the third level of training. The eagle is the symbol of leadership and the time to learn the skills necessary to harness your knowledge through teaching. A red belt is a level of instructor's status. Once you have reached this level you are now allowed to teach within the Ryu and start your path to black belt. It will usually be a period of one to three years after you have reached your instructors status to become a black belt or senior instructor. A red belt, however, is considered equal to a black belt in any other style by comparison.
The Belt System
Each belt improves on the basic skills you learn at beginner level. However, each rank does introduce many new skills not already familiar with the student.
Path of the Panther (beginner)
White - Focus on philosophy and the system
Yellow -Focus stances, rolls and falls
Orange - Focus on movement and agility
Green - Focus on strikes and kicks
Time of the Dragon (intermediate)
Blue - Focus on self-defense skills
Purple - Focus on sparring and grappling
Brown - Focus on the weapons
Flight of the Eagle (advanced)
Red - Focus on the mind arts and teaching the way
Learning for your next Rank
In order to know the information, you must first attend class and learn basic requirements. Because the system avoids being systematic, each test will be a unique learning experience. You must learn to expect the unexpected and prepare to test on any subject your instructor feels a requirement for your next rank. Tew Ryu follows a basic structure, building and adding knowledge as you improve, however, what may be difficult for one practitioner may be easy for another. Thus, it would not be realistic to test each person exactly the same.
Using this philosophy, we can offer a healthy atmosphere and training for people from all walks of life.
The time attainment for ranks will vary depending on how often you train in class and practice at home. It will usually be a process of two to six months per belt in the lower ranks, but may take a few months longer as you reach higher more difficult areas of knowledge. Each belt consists of three levels, these levels are symbolised by the amount of stars you wear. For example, a yellow belt with one star shows he/she has learned the first level of orange belt requirements. When one has received a third star, they have the basic knowledge needed for the next rank and may test.
